I know I'm like a year or so away from ever having to be ready for it, but I have to prepare myself at least a year in advance because I'm not Fritz Kreisler. I want to arrange a program that flows and is as fun to hear as it is to play. I'm a "classical" violinist, but I don't want my recital to be all classical because I like folk and modern violin music, too. So far I have:

Viotti Concerto No. 22
Bartok Roumanian Dances
Tartini Sonata in G minor (a.k.a. Devil's Trill)
de Beriot Scene de Ballet (if I'm not bored with it by the time my recital comes)
Mozart Romance in F Major

All but the Romance include double stops. Most contain false harmonics, Every last one has trills, and SdB has ricochet. A good range to display my technique but do these pieces mesh to people who might not have heard them.

I'm looking for a fun exciting program, like classical music that makes you want to get out of your seat and waltz...or do whatever dance you do. I don't want my audience to feel hindered and reserved because it's "classical".

Also, is it kosher to do a recital with alongside a vocalist or dancer. I'm not going for gimmicks, I want to show how well I perform in an ensemble/ with other artists, too.

All ideas greatly appreciated.

TiA,
G.X.

It is absolutely kosher to do a recital with guest artists. Not all violin music is solo stuff, right? There's lots of great vocal music with beautiful and challenging violin obbligatos, or duets with violin and other instruments. Get a group together even, and do a violin trio or something. Collaboration with other musicians is always encouraged. On my senior recital I had a JS Bach piece with violin, cello and harpsichord, and another set with classical guitar (I'm a mezzo-soprano). Make it fun! Part of the reasoning behind a recital is to showcase all your talents, so make one of your talents an ensemble piece. Why not? :3
