I remember people making big s**t over a few Wiis bricking with a lousy update, so I hope this article gets proportionate hyperbole.
It probably won't though, because it's not Nintendo.

This move seems like it has the potential to lose more money from pissed of modders than gain it from stopping pirates.

HOT DICKINGS for all modders. Although I would be pissed if my 360(halo 3 version) did get banned just because I bought it used and the previous person modded it. I know most of the modding s**t needs to stop because piracy is for Somalians.

That's the kind of ban power I wish I had. What would make me laugh is if Microsoft had unknowingly been sending out some refurbished, blacklisted 360s. Now that's a d**k move right to the mouth.
