Koiyuki The essencials to good web design I would like to know what they are, and what kind of styles a page could possibly be made in. Well it's a tricky question...
it depends on what you're really asking: - the layout - the graphical style - color-style - ...i dunno what? P:
Koiyuki And also, what would I ned to start one up? that one is easy on the other hand: - host - an FTP program - to place the files on the host (that's not requierd at some hosts i think...)

For one suggestion make navigation hella easy. It's very annoying when you have no idea how to get somewhere you know you have been before.
Also no hidden links (i cannot remember the name of this unfortunately) It is when you have a link that is an image or something similar and when you roll over it you then finally figure out what it takes you too. Very bad idea.
Don't get too crazy with your background. Any text that is hard to read; well, it won't be read.

And whats FTP? Cripes.... Ok well... FTP is File Transfer Protocol - its the way your computer talks to the web host for transferring files back and forth. Head over to www.webmonkey.com and start plowing through the documents there. They have some good ones on basics of web site design, as well as technical tutorials for actually building the site. There is too much to try to explain here. If you are not willing to go through all that and learn from the beginning... try something like keenspot.com that hosts your webcomic for you. Or hire someone to build the site.

It is impossible to really say what is right, and wrong as far as design goes.
With enough creativity and inginuity, a person can take what would be a bad design or layout, and make it work wonders.
It's sort of a mix of creativity, and know-how.
It helps to always try to do things that you aren't sure you can do. That way, you force yourself tolearn new things, and get more creative than you would have had you just settled for what you knew how to do beforehand.

Thank you all for the help, it is much appreciated. Although it will be a LOT to learn, especially from the deisgn end of it... gonk Just a thought, do most websites have a background color instead of an iimage?

Koiyuki Just a thought, do most websites have a background color instead of an iimage? I to say most... is hard - it depends on the type and purpose of the site. I tend to say simpler is better... a color or a wide non-interfering pattern is good since it doesn't fight with the text/content on the page. You can strike a balance tho and use a background image with css to freeze it in place and control text positions, etc. Just make sure to think subtle if you want people to actually read your pages. Eyecatching does not always equate to effective. I tend to make an inspiration folder for whatever project I'm working on... sometimes it is me researching my competition to see what they do... but sometimes its something unrelated, just an idea i like. You might start looking at webcomics you like and trying to figure out how they've organized and created their sites. Anyhow - have fun... good luck. Don't hesitate to ask for help, critiques and suggestions. My PM box is open...as it were. smile

I've actually been kicking around the idea of making a CCS page where you can pick a design to go along with your favorite charecter from the webcomic, but since theres about 10-13 different charecters, that would be a lot of design work... ._. How would one go about making an interchangable design page along the lines of CSS Zen Garden?

Koiyuki How would one go about making an interchangable design page along the lines of CSS Zen Garden? that's acomplished by changing the link to the css file - in this case it's done using php, i think... - but that can be acomplished by using javascript too probably...

The java that phpBB uses on ther forums may help streamline some of the things they do, but I can think of how the process could work without any Javascript at all.

More than likely theres a way to do it with just javascript if php isn;t an option, but you would have to ask someone who knew more about javascript than I do. But if you are really serious about experimenting with this, you can get cheap hosting that supports quite a few options.
