This particular thread is about Honda Hiroto/Tristan Taylor, one of Yuugi's friends, as well as Jounouchi's best buddy.

I will post my opinions first in a form format, so you can either choose to copy and use the format, or make up your own.
Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: Love. Why You Hold That Opinion: [SPOILER WARNING] It's really weird for me to say this, because Honda used to be my absolute least favorite character. Granted, this was a very long time ago, back when I had only seen perhaps five or so episodes of the dub, and I didn't even know his name yet. I just called him Plaster Head. XD;; After I got a bit more into the series and learned more about the characters, I decided I disliked Anzu more, and Honda kind of gradually moved up to neutral, as he never really did anything that stood out to me, so I realized I didn't particularly have any reasons to either like nor dislike him. However, the more I watched the series, the more he grew on me. Fanfiction also contributed a lot to this, as my main shipping was always Kaiba/Jounouchi. Because of this, Honda would often be the protective friend of Jounouchi who would stand up to Kaiba and make sure nothing bad happened to his friend. I loved that loyal attitude that people portrayed Honda with in fanfictions, and because I loved it so much, I started paying more attention to him in the series. I realized he had that same strong, caring, protective demeanor in the series, especially to Jounouchi, and I really admired that. I tend to like characters who act in the background as 'steady supports.' Honda's not just there to cheer his friends on, but to balance them and defend them. He doesn't get involved too much in the main plot, nor with very many other characters (he seems to only even develop relationships that stand out as more than friendship with Jounouchi, Otogi, and Shizuka), and often times he's just standing there in the background. However, once Jounouchi's doing something stupid, or Otogi's in trouble, or Shizuka's crying, or whatever, he's there to ground them back to earth. If something so traumatic were to ever happen to one of his close friends that was driving them insane, I could see Honda being that character that stays by their side and keeps them from completely losing themselves. Maybe not the character to bring them back completely into sanity, but he would keep them from going the opposite way until someone else could do that job. Honda's just always there, loyal, will do anything for those few he really opens his heart to, and yet is hilarious and goofy, like Jounouchi, while at the same time, never letting himself get overtaken by emotion. The two will have silly little moments and escapades, but when Jounouchi gets over the top or overly-emotional, Honda's always there to keep him steady, or to remind him to be serious when it's needed. I guess overall Honda is just a very balanced person who is good at controlling his own feelings, yet isn't afraid to let them loose when it's necessary. And if I were to ever be friends with the characters in the show, I could see myself getting along with Honda better than any other character, even my favorite Jounouchi. On a final note, I also think Honda is quite attractive, and am sad more people don't think so. I feel like he doesn't get drawn in fanart a lot or noticed as much as the other male characters because he's not 'pretty.' And yes, his hair is pretty much plaster, and ugly as hell, but the rest of him is just... he's taller than most of the characters, a bit tanner and more muscular, he has a nice, angular face, and the most gorgeous eyes. Just because he's not bishounen doesn't mean he isn't attractive in a more manly way. XD Or at least for me. I just wish people didn't use his hair or his background character status as a reason to ignore him or make fun of him so often. Favorite Characters to Pair With: Jounouchi Katsuya, Otogi Ryuuji, Kaiba Seto, Mazaki Anzu, Kawai Shizuka, Bakura Ryou. Rating of Favoriteness: Fourth favorite.

Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: Dislike Rating of Favoriteness: Not worth figuring out where I'd rate him, he's too low down. Why You Hold That Opinion: Honda has grown on me in years, I probably would have said hate in the past, however he just doesn't interest me enough to like him, but annoys me enough to not rank him at just neutral. While in reality Honda has all the qualities of a good friend, he just doesn't have enough of the qualities of an interesting character. I can respect him, but I just can't like him. I do rather like his interactions with Otogi though, I think a lot of the interest I can find in him would be in his rival/friendship type relationship with Otogi. I also do agree that he's not a repulsive character, and actually does have some of the makings of a very attractive character (which I usually notice in terms of amazing fan art, which is accurate but done in a way to highlight the amazing features - like skin and eyes - and downplay that awful hair). That hair really is ridiculously awful, and in anime where a lot of characters are really differentiated by hair, I do at least understand how that can ruin a character in the looks department. Poor badly clipped Honda. razz Favorite Characters to Pair With: Jounouchi and Otogi, conversely, I cannot stand him with Seto for some reason (although I do have some epic pictures of that pairing, just because the art is that amazing I swear!! xd ).

You know, I think it's Honda's hair... the abnormal way it grows slowly but surely causes Honda to grow on everyone over time... he's like that character that you hate at first, but then slowly decide you don't. As his hair grows, so does your affection for him. XD Otogi and Honda are just the best together. They bring so much humor... "Aw, how sweet, Duke and Tristan got their own little hole." XD Yes, if hair wasn't so significant in anime... and I mean, if you made his hair more realistic, making it actually physically possible, it would probably look like a pretty normal hairstyle. Just spiked brown hair, maybe standing out a little bit by having more at the top middle than on the sides. Silly anime hairstyles. And JK? You need to send me these epic pictures.

Yea, I think at first he just doesn't have any substance or relevance to the main story, no personal goals, and so you just have this tense feeling of why are you here?! I mean Anzu you at least feel a purpose - even if she is annoying - but I get a little irritated by Honda's presence. Kind of like Brock in Pokemon at first, he felt pointless to me. But Brock grew on me, and I guess while I never got to like Honda I did get to feel he had a role and like that he existed. Especially because of Otogi, because yes, that is weirdly one of my favorite pairings considering that one of the involved characters is so low down on my list.
Yea if it wasn't just one large clump in the middle of his head, it comes off as a fail Mohawk (and I'm not a hawk fan), then he'd at least be passable looking. Oh well.
And ok I'll see if I can find the pics when I get home from WA. Most of my pics aren't on my laptop anymore since I had the hard drive rebuilt. There is at least one really good one of Honda and Seto I know I didn't lose - surprising enough as I hate the pairing.

Yes... that's what it was. There was just nothing to him at first. I think reading the manga and his relationship with Jounouchi in it was what first made me start liking him, seeing some of that deeper character in him that the anime doesn't portray as often. Though I never disliked Brock, probably because I started watching Pokemon after he had already become an established characters. XD He's always been my favorite Pokemon character. But no worries about the pairing choice; Otogi's pretty down on my list, but Chaseshipping is still one of my favorites too. Hahaha, Honda and his failhawk, I love it. Yay for pretty art to hated pairings! *admittedly likes quite a bit of Prideshipping art*

Yea, exempting how much it made me almost hate Kaiba, I really like the beginning of the manga for what it gives you on some of the lesser characters. I disliked both Brock and Misty at first, but they both grew on me, Misty more than Brock. I think if Gary was more present he'd probably have been my favorite character, as he wasn't it became James. Though it might have been Ash at first, but it was definitely James for most of the series.
Haha, Chaseshipping for the win! I think the majority of my favorite YGO fanfics are that pairing too. xd
I like quite a bit of Prideshipping art too, haha, but that was my first pairing and I still like it even if I no longer love it.

Yes, I was not happy with how Kaiba was portrayed in the early manga, but other than that I loved it. Brock was just kind of the character I was automatically drawn to, and that never changed, though I used to hate Gary, even though now he's one of my favorites. I never cared for Misty, but she's managed to grow on me to a mild liking status. Jessie and James I've always loved, and Ash I've always hated. Yay! I despise Prideshipping. XD

Ok now your avi is naked, I asked Karma why hers was but I'm not guessing that unless this is some weird solidarity statement, this is achievement related isn't it?
Yea, early Kaiba was too flat and just evil without any depth or reason to it. I mean sure he had the whole tragic past, but the actions just went around the explanation, it bothered me. Brock likewise didn't have enough depth for me, and then when they gave him a purpose it wasn't one I was interested in. Though I didn't mind him being there. I loved Gary in spite of liking Ash because I tend to like antagonistic. I really hated Misty at first, but it wasn't until they took her off the show that I realized I found her very necessary, and that there were even things I liked and missed about her. It's what eventually got me to stop watching. Too much cast overhaul usually kills things for me.
Haha, I remember you do, I used to really love it but now it doesn't interest me as much as it used to.

Haha, yeah, there's an achievement for posting in a thread where everyone's nude, but it wasn't working for me for some reason, which is why I stayed nude so long. Eventually gave up today. XD Yes, even when you did get the tragic past, though it helped him seem a little deeper and more meaningful, he still needed to show that in the way he actually acted as a character. Brock's always seemed like that character to me that has so much to him, but just always remains quiet and in the shadows, instead putting others before him, and I love that. Like when there would be episodes dedicated to him, he'd be center stage for once, and you'd see so much more of him, and I'd love that. But then he'd always go back to just support all the younger characters afterward, kind of just being the follower character. As for Misty, she had already grown on me a bit by the time she left, but her suddenly not being there really did help my opinion on her as well. I've never liked any of the new main characters; Tracy was probably the closest one to me liking, but it was more like because I liked to make fun of him.

Yea, I have lost patience for achievements, if they are easy and they just happen (like counts for posting in forums) then cool, but I'm not going to bother trying for them anymore. Too much work and not enough reward.
I liked Brock as an established character but he never did anything for me, he was in the shadows, but not in a mysterious way. So he just ended up not interesting me rather than intriguing me. Misty got on my nerves but in a way that got me emotionally invested in her, and in comparison to all who came after she was definitely a much better developed character. I couldn't stand most of the new characters, including most of the new Pokemon (not necessarily a complaint against types, though some were lame, but personalities for established characters), so eventually it just killed my interest in the show and stopped watching. I have wanted to go back and watch old episodes again though, maybe someday. My friend was telling me they are changing Team Rockets uniforms to the established black grunt suit, rather than the spiff white ones our favorite fail duo always sported. That made me quite sad.

Haha, I'm quite enjoying achievements, though some of them piss me off, like the one for going to a Gaia event at a convention. That's just not something I can easily do, and it bothers me more because I did manage to go to the first ever Gaia event in Arizona... a few months before achievements started. How long do you think it will be until they have another even here? Forever. But I like little completionist goodies like achievements overall. I don't need shadow characters to be mysterious to intrigue me. XD I like most of the second generation of Pokemon, but third and further I hardly like any of them. New characters just suck though. I actually found some Japanese Pokemon online that I'd been watching for a while. I got to like episode 13, because that video wouldn't work. I should try it again soon and see if I can continue. What, why would they change their uniform color? That's retarded. They're supposed to have white uniforms because they fail; it's like the demoted uniform. XP

I do like the idea of them too, for the same reason. But I think I got turned off the whole thing because of that agitation as well. I think it was the birthday one that highlighted it for me, because mine had seriously just passed only days or so before achievements started up. It highlighted the whole frustrating prospect of not being able to get them all, and being OCD that just was too much for me so I kind of just lost interest in them entirely. If I hit one up accidentally great, I'll usually go to the page and check it out and see what's on there. But I'm no longer actively pursuing them. Too many of them are just spam encouraging and some of them are impossible for me, so it'll just drive me nuts in the long run.
Well they don't have to just be mysterious for me either, but they have to be something, and he just never ended up being something for me. The new people are definitely more irritating to me than any new Pokemon though. Haha, it is like the demoted uniform (even though I do like the look of it better). I have no idea, that's just what my friend told me, and now I'm not speaking with her so it's not like I'll have further information on that anytime soon. stressed Oh well, with so much on my fail list it's not likely I'd spend time on newer Pokemon episodes anyhow, I'd be more likely to dedicate my time re-watching old ones. More worthwhile I think. razz

Oh, that does suck, with the birthday one. But at least you're guaranteed to get that one eventually; I may never get the convention one, and that drives me crazy. Though a lot of them do encourage spam; thankfully they made an achievements forum that contains it all. Well, found a picture: http://www.pokemonaus.com/?p=1438 Though I do prefer the black uniform in general, I personally think those two look awful in it, especially with the more pastel-colored hair they have now. I miss Jessie's firey red hair. ;_; And Giovanni looks like a Nazi leader. But yes, old episodes top/

Yea, if the achievements go on for a year. They still feel like a transitional commodity to me, so I keep waiting for them to go away, and I'll never get that. With my luck, they'll go away around August 3rd, right before my birthday. sad
Ugh no, it's awful! And why is Jessie's hair purple?!? NO!! This makes me so sad. It's weird, in theory I should like black better, but for some reason I am more partial to the white ones. Probably because I just love Jessie and James so, and thus I associated love and awesomeness with the white. And he does look like a Nazi leader...o_O
