Enrollment
It was back.

Red had no idea how the little acceptance bin found her again, nor did she want to know. Instead, she moved all her beloved frisbees up and out of its reach while it contently chewed on student applications.

"Good... uh, bin?" She guessed, reaching out to awkwardly pet it.

A new noteboard has appeared on the door to Malodore's room, replacing the old one that was broken. The noteboard is blank for now, though the note stuck up on the door now is old and familiar.

It seems the plague doctor has moved back into its old haunts.

Name: L.C. Malodore; you may address it as Malodore.
(The L stands for Loreto; the C stands for both Cirurgien and Corvi.)
Nicknames: None, unless you want to be stared at and then summarily ignored. (It has come to accept 'Doc' from a few people, though.)
Gender: Nongendered. It prefers to be referred to as 'it' rather than 'he', 'she', or other gendered/genderless pronouns.
Age: Old enough.

Faction/Race: Undead / Plague Doctor
Alignment: True Neutral (unless given a good reason not to be)
Image Song: The Plague, Assassin's Creed II

Personality: Malodore is reserved and unfailingly polite. It cultivates a professional and cultured air, and can seem distant to those who don't know it well. It doesn't open up to others easily, and while it does have a sense of (dry and deadpan) humor, its idea of fun doesn't necessarily correlate with general opinion. It is very disciplined, devoting most of its time to its studies and scientific hobbies.

Malodore respects others, unless given a reason to do otherwise, and expects the same respect in return. It's very difficult to ruffle Malodore's scalpel-like feathers - or, at least, it's difficult to get a confirmed reaction or rise out of it, whether positive or negative. It has opened up a great deal since coming to Amityville, having made a number of friends and alliances among its fellow students.

Its true passion is medicine - it wants to learn and to heal, to protect everyone it can from maladies and changes not consciously chosen. Its views of Insanity have shifted somewhat after speaking with Professor Red, and learning that it could indeed be a consensual pathway for some to take. Insanity still makes it uneasy, but it agrees that it is acceptable for others to freely choose that path. It is currently covertly studying the forbidden topic of Cores, in an effort to ensure that Insanity and other such maladies can never again be weaponized and inflicted on others without their consent.

Malodore has become more interested in physical combat, now that it is fully aware of the horrible truth and deadly threat of Hunters. While physical battle is not its forte, it is determined to support and protect the people and places that it loves.

Malodore has a few quirks: it is sensitive about being properly clothed, and does not like exposing more of its body than is strictly necessary: hands (and forearms) for fine manipulation, feet for careful movement, and tail and wings for obvious reasons. Anything else is right out. It also does not like to be touched, and will avoid or refuse physical contact if it can - unless the person in question has its particular trust.

Lastly, Malodore is finicky about physical hygiene and cleanliness. It doesn't care (as much) about the cleanliness of others, but it does not like to be dirty. If it has to be dirty for any length of time, it will get more and more irritated and twitchy until it finally gets to bathe.

Other Notes:

- Malodore is fairly tall - over six feet, in fact! Its weight, however, is disproportionately light in comparison to its height. This is because Cirurgien plague doctors have hollow, bird-like bones. It's also undead, and therefore lacks a complete musculature and certain internal organs. Because of this, Malodore is rather physically weak - it can't lift heavy objects, and its physical strikes lack a certain oomph. It also has rather terrible night vision, for some reason.

- To make up for that lack of physical power, Malodore has excellent fine motor skills; it is especially deft with its hands, capable of extremely fine manipulation. Its claws are sharp enough to scratch, though not to tear or pierce. The blade-feathers on its wings, and the blade on its tail, are very sharp and can cut like knives.

- Malodore's wings are not developed enough to allow it to fly at present, so don't expect it to do so!

- Malodore's beak-mask is both a mask and a functioning mouth; the rigid beak opens and closes when it speaks. The mask cannot be removed except by Malodore itself or an elder plague doctor (or someone incredibly powerful, much more so than any student). Anyone attempting to do so will meet with potentially violent resistance on Malodore's part.

- Malodore's voice is a pleasant, gender-neutral tenor; it speaks with a slight Italian accent, and often uses Italian words sprinkled throughout its speech. (It also has a surprisingly foul mouth when it gets annoyed... if you can understand its Italian curses.)

- Malodore has a series of pockets sewn into the interior of its wide sleeves. It stores many small objects in there, especially small first-aid implements (tweezers, small scissors, bandages, gauze, needles of varying strengths, suture thread) and containers for samples.

Views on Other Factions:
Humans (general): Malodore feels that humanity as a whole is best kept as they are now, as a carefully shepherded FEAR-ecosystem without too much direct control by Halloween forces. It is not formally aligned with DETH but feels their ideals have merit... to a point.

Hunters: Extremely mixed feelings. It believes beyond a shadow of the doubt that the Hunters caused Riley's death (ultimately temporary though it may have been) and yet it has become clear that some Hunters have reasons for being Hunters that have nothing to do with destroying the majority of Halloween life. Things it witnessed in the Isle of Famine made it clear that humanity needs protection from some source...

Horsemen: Again, mixed feelings. It deeply enjoyed its time in the Isle of Famine, and feels that the destruction of the Four Isles was an utterly senseless loss. At the same time, what it saw there beneath the Isle proved that the Hunters had provocation for the actions they took. It enjoys the company of individual Horsemen for who they are personally, but as a whole the Lost Clans make it uneasy.

Why did they enroll at the academy? Malodore enrolled for two reasons: to learn, and to escape from its previous life. Malodore's ultimate goal is to not only scare humans, but to tend to Halloween Town's citizens as a doctor-figure as well. One hopefully more balanced than the usual gibbering mad scientist; Malodore has nothing but disdain for such an uncontrolled existence.

Personal History: Malodore was born into a family of plague doctors of very old lineage, having haunted Halloween Town since the human Renaissance. The Cirurgien family was, at one point, well-off enough to build a massive villa called the Casa Cirurgien. They are one of the original plague doctor houses, and as such very, very proud of their history and heritage.

Recently, however, that very pride led the family into decline. They have grown insular, clinging to their traditional leechcraft, bleeding, and other antiquated methods of medical care. The family staunchly refused to adopt new techniques or to even tolerate explorations of such within the villa walls. Older generations began trying to deliberately isolate the younger ones, quashing their curiosity in favor of maintaining tradition - whatever the cost.

Malodore was one of the curious ones. It ran away from the Casa after a rather explosive incident, and would be quite happy to never see or hear from its family again. At that time, it chose the name Malodore for itself - though it did keep Cirurgien as a middle name, sort of. It doesn't speak about its past or family often, and will only broach the subject with people it trusts.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Natural Ability: Immunity. Malodore is immune to the effects of any germ, pathogen, or illness, whether spawned from the Human World or from Halloween Town itself.

Update: After spending so much time in Riley's mind while she was afflicted with Insanity, Malodore's natural Immunity adapted in self-defense. Depending on the concentration of Insanity, Malodore's Immunity will either completely protect it, lessen the effect, or actively fight to reduce the hold the Insanity may have on it. While it is not completely Insanity-proof in all circumstances, it is at the very least highly Insanity-resistant.

Year Two Natural Ability: Minor Empathy. Malodore can sense un-shielded emotion within a short radius of its body. If someone is within that radius and neither that person nor Malodore itself are shielding against the empathic ability, Malodore will be able to tell what that person is feeling. Malodore might sense, for example, that someone is feeling sad, even if they're disguising the physical 'tells' of the emotion. However, it wouldn't know why the person was sad, just that the emotion was there.

This ability works on emotions only - Malodore cannot read thoughts, nor can it influence others' emotions in any unusual way. Indeed, the powerful emotions of others might well overwhelm the plague doctor if it's caught off-guard! Malodore acquired this ability through bleed-over from bonding with Riley so closely.

Year Three Natural Ability: Contagion Call. Upon contacting a target, Malodore can pull any disease-causing germs (bacteria/viruses) or infection out of the target's body. This halts the disease/infection and prevents further damage. The extracted contagions are safely housed within Malodore's body, in a dormant/non-contagious state, for later use in its Miasma FEAR ability.

If Malodore uses Contagion Call too much within a short period of time (more than 2-3 times a day), the extracted contagions will partially overwhelm its own Immunity and it will have to rest and purge itself before resuming work.

This ability does not work on: FEAR-based diseases & infections, psychological/mental issues, pure physical damage, poison, allergens, or mutagens. It does not heal the target in terms of HP or auto-repair damage already dealt.

Y3 FEAR Ability: Miasma (Tainted Fang)
(Based on the miasmatic theory of disease, the common theory at the time plague doctors operated.)

A fine mist rises around the target and 'infects' them temporarily, producing the symptoms of disease. Miasma does damage over time as the target gets 'sicker'; depending on the attack's initial effectiveness, the damage may be more or less severe.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Y2 FEAR Ability: Scalpel Rain (Swift Strikes)

Malodore focuses its FEAR through its wings, causing a few of its feathers to sharpen and lengthen; it then sweeps its wings forward, sending a hail of bladed feathers at its target. After they hit, the feathers dissolve into FEAR and re-form on Malodore's wings.

Y1 FEAR Ability: Physician, Heal Thyself (The Chill)

Malodore focuses its FEAR back into its own body (or into the body of an ally), knitting wounds and healing damage.

Learned Ability: Beginner First Aid
Battle Effect: Once per battle, a player may choose to roll a 4-sided dice. This is the amount that the player heals themselves or another target for. You forfeit your normal battle attack turn if you want to use this attack.
Non-battle Effect: A character can heal small wounds or cuts of other players or themselves, and know how to do basic stitching.

Update: Due to training with Nurse Cricket, this ability is more effective, with an additional +2 modifier.

Update: Due to additional training with Nurse Cricket, this ability is more effective, with an additional +1 modifier. (Total modifier is +3.) Malodore has also gained the ability to use FEARhealing to untwist broken limbs.

Non-FEAR Skills: Excellent fine motor skills and manual dexterity. Metallic tail-blade and wingfeathers are sharp and can cut like knives if properly wielded - the tail has limited whiplike movement, or the blade (still attached to the tail, of course) can be held in the hand like a dagger; feathers can be plucked and thrown at a target, dissipating after they hit and re-forming on Malodore's wings.

Malodore's room is located on the second floor of the undead dormitory, by dint of it being somewhat avian. It keeps its room fastidiously clean. It is a private creature, largely preferring instead to make rendezvous in public areas like the school library.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The room is rather light and airy, with high vaulted ceilings. The walls are papered in pleasant grays; one wall (not depicted above) is covered as high up as Malodore could reach with its notes on the Insanity affliction, laid out in a pattern that likely only makes sense to the plague doctor itself.

The floor is made of chilly flagstones - which Malodore doesn't mind, being undead. The furniture is primarily dark wood and leather, though the leather used doesn't seem to all be the same variety of creature-skin. Malodore's favorite place to sit is a leathery armchair near its bookshelves; Luce has a pillow on the floor nearby.

A row of large windows line the wall behind Malodore's study-table. They are often opened to allow fresh breezes to flow through the room. Malodore's small dionaea plant sits on one windowsill, filtering out most of the bugs that try to get in. Additional plants, all with medicinal properties, are kept in pots throughout the space - some on the walls, some in planting racks.

Malodore keeps many books, inks, and implements on hand, including a small number of scalpels in varying sizes. The books on every shelf - the shelves are currently at 65% capacity - are largely medical texts, nearly all focusing on modern medical techniques. A few skulls, specimen jars, and other oddities round out the decor quite nicely. The whole room smells pleasantly of old books, with the occasional whiff of cleaning spray after Malodore's messier experiments.

Malodore's sleeping alcove is off to one side, in a small, windowless space separated from the open study area by a thick leathery curtain. Even though Malodore doesn't technically need a bed, it still has one as it enjoys the occasional nap. The bed is made of metal, and bears a vague resemblance to a hospital bed. It is always neatly made with clean linen sheets and a cotton blanket. Luce's own wee pillow sits at the foot of the bed, and Parassiti has a nest in the nightstand's top drawer.

Students Encountered:

••••• Temes: The first person Malodore met at Amityville; while it hasn't really encountered her since, it remembers her being interesting.

••••• Gargantuan: A big, sweet lug of a swamp monster with no respect for personal space. Malodore finds G strangely disarming, and often ends up in odd situations (like the Battle of the Bands or the Christmastival Play) because of him.

••••• Shekh: Malodore was first drawn to Shehk because she could talk to Luce; it considers her a good friend, as does Luce. She is hard-working and practical, two qualities Malodore greatly admires; she is also close to Jericho, and serves (in Malodore's opinion) to temper and ground the dragon - something sorely needed in these trying times.

••••• Sin: A demoness that Malodore met once. They carved pumpkins together.

••••• Davinica: Did not mock Malodore even after its shadow behaved in a most unseemly fashion in Shadowcraft 101; thus, Malodore supposes that she is a decent person.

••••• Kasumi: A friend of G's and band-mate during the Battle of the Bands. Together, Malodore and the rest of Barbed Doctor and the Organic Nation discovered the Spirit of Metal.

••••• Sammy: A zombie possessing incredible drive and determination. Malodore has a healthy respect for her forceful personality, and considers her a good friend. In recent weeks, it has come depend more on her strength when it feels it has little of its own.

••••• Junko: A good friend to both Malodore and Luce; she is pleasant and thoroughly likeable.

••••• Igneous: A kind young gargoyle with a good head on her shoulders. The one time they worked together for a class, Malodore appreciated her curiosity and her grounded sensibilities.

••••• Ziyah: Had a decent amount of curiosity about one of Malodore's impromptu Creepateria experiments.

•••••♥ Riley: The love of Malodore's unlife, now returned from death thanks to Bogeyman scientific prowess. However, given that her memory is damaged, Malodore has a number of fears that go along with its love...

••••• Israfel: The Shipper of Ships; Malodore theorizes that Israfel is perpetually drunk even without any chemical influences whatsoever. At least he's pure-hearted!

••••• Jericho: Because of his close friendship and mount-rider bond with Riley, Malodore considers Jericho to be family in a sense. It greatly admires his fortitude and steadfast strength. It is determined that it will not let Jericho - also afflicted with Insanity - be lost to it the way Riley was.

••••• Aksaja: Another member of Ickis Car on the trip to Christmas Town. Malodore's memories of him pretty much involve stubbornness.

••••• Westus: He was very, very good with a snowball-throwing device.

••••• Lucien: A sweet creature, but very quiet and unassuming.

••••• Alwine: Very polite, even when in dire straits.

••••• Nukpana: A noisy braggart that mostly bemuses Malodore.

••••• Christof: An excellent minion, though less tractable than one might like, and a bit mercurial. Malodore appreciates Christof and cares about him a great deal, but it does not feel that it truly understands him.

••••• Amrita: A delightful young vetala ghoul that Malodore helped move into a new body. It was delighted to help her, and hopes that more fascinating experiments are in their future.

••••• Calder: Somehow, the kelpie has become a good friend. Malodore thoroughly respects Calder's judgement when it comes to emotional matters.

••••• Obsidian: Though they met only briefly, Malodore considers her a cultured and well-learned ghoul.

••••• Little-Wolfe: Met in a class; she designed an outfit for Malodore which the plague doctor deemed acceptable.

••••• Lizzy: An intelligent ghoul with unexpected resources of courage and resolve. Though Malodore does not know her very well, it considers her someone to be trusted.

••••• Tsetsiliya: A quiet and soft-spoken ghoul met in Botany class. She seems to have vast knowledge of botanical matters.

••••• Barth: A Sloth demon; Christof's other Master. Despite appearances, he has a surprisingly capable mind and should not be underestimated. He also enjoys some varieties of Science, which Malodore approves of.

••••• Sharra: A nergal boil that Malodore traveled with on the Island.

••••• Mandy: Met during both Christmas Town and the Island; remembered primarily because she calls Malodore 'Doc', just like Sammy does.

••••• Sheridan: Yet another dragon, this one interested in science! Obviously, Malodore would like to talk to him about this at length.

••••• Hasuko: Malodore's oldest non-plague-doctor friend, its former penpal from its childhood. She, too, is now a student at Amityville, much to Malodore's delight.

••••• Jove: A gentle, quiet young ghost of the canine persuasion. Luce adores him utterly; Malodore approves, especially since Jove also shares an interest in medicine.

••••• Charlie: A very hyper, emotional demon who, through no fault of his own, is a perpetual source of confusion.

••••• Hel: A capable young valkyrie who knew an important ghoul from Malodore's past. It was delighted to have made her acquaintance, and honored by the reassurance and kindness she showed it despite the awkward situation they found themselves in.

Others Encountered:

••••• Invictus (Horseman): An intimidating and yet reassuring presence. Malodore feels that Invictus is full of contradictions, but it cannot deny the Heir's knowledge and power.

••••• Faiyum (Horseman): A Horseman of Famine Clan, a fellow scientist who also lost his mate when the Four Isles were destroyed. A possible kindred spirit?

••••• Deryk (Hunter): Malodore cut off his finger while enraged - it is troubled by that loss of control, but not at all sorry for the results.

Faculty Encountered:

••••• Nurse Cricket: Malodore's favorite teacher, for obvious reasons. It considers her trustworthy, an intelligent and highly capable practitioner of the medical arts.

••••• Dr. Alabaster: Respectable enough, and he does have an actual Ph.D.... even if it's only in literature.

••••• Prof. Helma Shox: Respect. Terrified respect.

••••• Mr. Blobby: A gigantic, gelatinous bastardo who refused to regurgitate an elf.

••••• Professor Cadmus: HAIL STEVE! Malodore usually enjoys Botany.

••••• Professor Malcolm: Learned in the ways of minipets, though apparently not in the ways of flammable materials.

••••• Professor Winters: Intimidating and ever so proper.

••••• Professor Savage: For some reason, Malodore never does too well in any of her courses...

••••• Gnomes (in general): Figli di puttane stupido, tutti!

Companions:

Luce and Ombra: Luce is a grown Cwn Annwn pup, Malodore's pride and joy. She is devoted, social, and bold, with a firecracker personality. While she is happy and friendly to people, she is also very protective of Malodore and will defend it if needed. Luce loves to hunt for things, be they objects or unfortunate small animals. She also has a special ability: she can temporarily phase into a damp, white mist.

Ombra belongs to Riley, Malodore's former (and perhaps future) mate; after her 'death' the plague doctor took the pup in, and is keeping him until Riley returns to Amityville and can tend for him once more. He seems rambunctious, though he has moments of uncertainty that Malodore can completely sympathize with.

Malodore obtained Luce after arriving at Amityville Academy, but it won't say a word about where she came from. Hrm. It does take Luce almost everywhere - it's fairly rare to see Malodore without the little pup!

Her name means 'light'.

Fedele: A mysterious crow, sent to Malodore after it gave itself wings. Fedele was bred and trained by Armida, another plague doctor from Malodore's past. On rare occasions, Armida may look through Fedele's eyes and/or speak through his beak. The crow's own personality is a mystery so far; he seems to keep to himself, preferring to observe and seem darkly amused by everything, as crows do.

His name means 'faithful'.

Dolce: A pastry-feline, this unusual creature came into Malodore's possession after the Open House. Dolce is a timid little cat, and tends to spend his life zipping from hiding place to hiding place. He does enjoy running at speed - in fact, when he hits a certain speed a rainbow trail appears behind him, much to Malodore's bemusement.

Dolce's 'scariness' appears to come from his apparently innocuous nature - apparently the melodic nyan-cry of the pastry-cat can work its way into human brains, slowly driving them insane.

His name means 'sweet'.

Parassiti: Malodore's first companion creature, Parassiti is a wee Scrags plague-rat. Plague doctors tend to have an affinity for rats, given their influence on the spread of the bubonic plague, and Malodore is no exception.

Parassiti can be a mean-spirited little jerk - she misses Malodore's old home, the Casa Cirurgien, and reacted to her sudden move to Amityville by acting out. Fortunately, bonding through Professor Malcolm's Minipet Training classes has eased their relationship somewhat.

Her name means 'vermin'.

As noted, Malodore has a large number of books, etc.; it does not lack for personal possessions. However, there are a few special items that it is particularly fond of...

Riley's Keepsakes: Items that once belonged to Riley, now in Malodore's care after her 'death', and to be kept until she returns to Amityville. These include a token of her first kill, pictures of the two of them together, a heart-shaped box that once held candied brains, and a few other items.

Heart of a Sixty-Year-Old-Man: It's in a jar. On Malodore's desk. This preserved organ beats precisely once every hour, exactly on the hour. A strange clock, to be sure.

School Supplies: Malodore has a few school supplies obtained from Mr. Blobby, the school store - under great duress, as the gelatinous cube was deliberately being difficult, Jack-damn-it. (Or so Malodore believes.) Malodore possesses two each of bookbats, scis-birds, penstrictors, and staple-gators.

First Aid Field Kit: While Malodore always carries around basic supplies in its sleeves, it gained this particularly special kit from training with Nurse Cricket. This kit contains the following items:

1. Piece of Chalk (liquid will not cross a line made with this chalk)
2. FEAR Injection Pens
3. Packaged Antiseptic Wipes
4. Packaged Ointment Packets
5. Tube of Anti-Burn Gel
6. Gauze Pad x 5, Large
7. Gauze Pad x 5, Medium
8. Box of Bandages
9. Gauze Roll, Large
10. Space Blanket
11. Fast-Acting Cold Packs
12. Bag of Saline
13. Red Potion
14. Blue Potion
15. Gold Potion
16. Black Potion
17. Medical Shears
18. Medical Tape
19. Pen Light
20. Thermometer

(The kit can be protected using the mechanics for Y3 Battle Cry - two turns, with the total equaling the amount of shielding the kit has.)

Other Creatures of the Night:
These minipets do not strictly belong to Malodore, but may sometimes show up anyway.

Calder's Leeches: After meeting the kelpie in despair over his little leech friends, Malodore took pity on both the leeches and Calder and took the 'children' in... just temporarily, of course. When the kelpie was able to take his pets back, a few of them opted to stay with Malodore. They live in a large leech-jar that is nicely swamped up, and are given fresh bloody meat to slurp on whenever they like.

Egyptian Mummy-Cat: This undead kitty was discovered by Luce - in a cunning toilet-paper disguise. It currently lives in the undead dormitory graveyard, roughly under Malodore's window (where it landed after escaping from Malodore's room). It occasionally shows up on the sill, begging for scraps. Luce thinks of it as her arch-nemesis.

Venus Flycat: Malodore won this from the Student Council party and subsequently forgot about it. It now roams the graveyard as well, snapping up the bugs and flies that come to pester the (un)dead.

Pink Elephant: This... doesn't really exist. Does it? Luce occasionally spots it in the corner of the room and barks at it until it disappears...

A Few Quick Notes:

- Malodore's preferred personal pronoun is 'it'. Neither Malodore nor I are offended/annoyed if you use another one, however!

- Any errors in Malodore's Italian are due to Google Translate, as I do not personally know the language. >.>
