- Ballast's Mother's POV -
She finally had the baby. It was hard going through pregnancy, but it was worth it. She had given birth... to an Uchiha. She smiled, thoughts of money running through her head. Once that Sharingan was awakened, she could sell the eyes. She knew people were looking for them, or she'd heard, at least. She rocked the innocent child in her arms, and the boy instinctively leaned towards her, trusting the woman who would sell his soul to the devil for the right price.
There was a quick rapping on the door, and it opened. The Mother looked at the nurse, and a sinking feeling coursed through her. The Nurse's look was a bit unpleasant, and the Mother knew that she had bad news. "Well, out with it, then." The Mother said, hiding her fear behind a facade of irritation.
The Nurse nodded, standing a bit straighter, almost as if trying to embolden herself. "You said your boy is an Uchiha?" The Mother nodded quickly. "Well... For some reason, his eyes didn't develop the way they were supposed to... Meaning, they're normal."
The Mother felt her world come crashing down."So... H-He won't have the Sharingan?"
The Nurse shook her head. "In fact, we can't explain it. It's almost as if it were bea-" It was at this point that The Mother stopped listening. She didn't care about the technical jargon. All that mattered was that this all had been for nothing. At some point, the Nurse left, realizing the patient wasn't listening. The Mother just kept looking at the boy in her arms. "Well, well. If I can't have your eyes, then what use are you?" She sighed, and realized something. "You still need a name, don't you? Hm... How about Ballast? Yes, Ballast suits you just fine, my little Burden."
3 hours and 42 minutes into his life, Ballast Heiland was called a Burden for the first time.
4 years, 2 months, and 17 days after the birth of Ballast Heiland:
- Ballast Heiland's POV -
Ballast scurried along the streets, money that he had collected and stolen hidden in his pockets. The words of Mother came back to him - 'If I don't see 2500 Ryo by tonight, You'll be sleeping in the rain.' - So far, he only had 1327 Ryo, but he still had a few hours left. He saw a another potential target, and snuck up to the person. His hand slipped into the other's pocket, but his heart leaped out of his chest when his arm was grabbed.
"What the hell, Punk?" Suddenly he felt the back of a hand strike him across the face. Ballast had a weightless feeling for a moment, then he landed on the ground, hard. He looked up, trying to see what happened, but in his dazed state, everything was blurry, and all he could make out was a large shape hurrying towards him. Suddenly, the shape - or was it a person? - stopped. Ballast tried to listen, but the sound was in and out. "- him alone. -" He tried to listen harder, and found what he was looking for. "- We shou - im alo - ust go ho -" With these last few words, Ballast Heiland lost his hold on consciousness.
- One Hour Later -
When he woke up, Ballast immediately realized two things. One, his money was gone, and that alone made him tear up. Two, he didn't know where he was. Fear gripped his heart. Mother told him of the slavers she'd sell him too if he didn't stop being a Burden, but he didn't ever think he'd actually meet any. "What is your name?" Ballast turned to the voice that rang out behind him, and the sight was almost enough to make him run in terror. The person in front of him had two huge wing - Like a bat's, almost - and this fact terrified the boy.
"I... Um, I a-am... B-B-Ballast." Ballast's voice quivered in fear. "P-Please don't e-eat me!" The person turned to the much younger boy with irritated eyes.
"Didn't your mother ever teach you not to judge based on appearances?" He sighed "You're just a child, so it can't be helped, I guess. Anyway, I'm not going to hurt you." He looked at the boy, softening his eyes. "Tell me, Ballast, what is your last name."
The kid looked at the person... monster... thing, and answered. "Ah... H-Heiland."
The other smiled, though Ballast didn't know why. "One last question. Why did you steal the money." Ballast looked at him, and opened his mouth and explained everything.
- One Hour Later -
Ballast gave Mother the 2500 Ryo he got from the person who had stopped the guy he tried to steal money from. The person just gave him the money and said, in exchange, Ballast had to come see him. To Ballast, it seemed like a great deal. So, the next day, he would go to the house and stay there for the day, and get money
4 years, 2 months, and 17 days after the birth of Ballast Heiland, he made his first friend.
5 years, 1 month, and 23 days after the birth of Ballast Heiland:
- Ballast's POV -
His Friend had been teaching him, showing him how to be stronger. He wasn't very good at it, yet, but he was changing. He felt it. His nails were getting stronger, and he could heal a bit better. Ballast walked to the house his Friend was staying at, knowing the way by heart. He walked in without knocking, because he came in at this time every day. His Friend was already waiting for him. "Ballast..." He started, "It's time for the final step." Ballast nodded. The man walked over to him, and put a finger on his forehead. "Sleep."
When Ballast awoke, the first thing he felt was weakness. Then, he felt the dull pain in his neck. Finally, he felt a Deep Thirst. His Friend looked to the pale boy. "It's done." Ballast nodded and walked out of the house, forgetting the money. His Friend looked after him, worry evident in his face, but it was a tradition for this step to take it's own course.
Ballast reached his home, and stumbled his. His Mother was there, waiting. "Well? Where's the money?"
Ballast just shook his head. Mother's demeanor turned cold. "Get out of my ******** house, you Burden." Ballast ignored the words.
"I'm thirsty..."
Mother exploded. "I don't care! You are a liability! A Burden! Get out of my House!" Ballast just looked at her pleadingly. "Don't look at me like that, Bur-"
5 years, 1 month, 23 days, 7 hours and 44 minutes after the birth of Ballast Heiland, he was called a Burden for the 3023rd and last time.
5 years, 1 month, 23 days, 7 hours and 48 minutes after the birth of Ballast Heiland, he snapped and drained his mother dry.
No matter how bad she was, Ballast learned one thing from his mother. You have to look out for yourself, and that's all that matters.
