The species, pets/familiars, and setting

-Zikwa are from underground. There are no differences between the genders.
Lists of pets and familiars can be found here and here.
On the swamp As for real places that resemble Matope, it's a pretty alien place, but the Everglades are a good place to start, as Matope was inspired by watching several TV shows about the Everglades in a row. Just like Matope the Everglades have Mangrove forests, Cypress forests covered in kudzu, marshes, and sawgrass prairies. "Coastline" is a bit misleading. It really looks more like this than a typical coastline like you're probably envisioning. There are sandy beaches but they're mostly sloping out of big salty marshes. And then open ocean, punctuated by a few standing mangrove patches. wiki

Names and dreams
Names come to Kimeti, Kiokote, Acha, and Zikwa as a dream. Since they know no knowledge of human culture, certain words cannot be used; the words should be something familiar to the swamp. Names also need to be real, english words. Try to keep them short, and simple if you can.
Dreams can come in the form of anything. A few sentences, a short story, a drawing, anything!
Totoma are born live, so they are born nameless. They must earn their name through a feat of strength.
