Ƭhe year is 3066. After coming out of the shadows, beings of the supernatural realm have slowly become accepted as fellow inhabitants of Earth over the last thousand years. Each race has co-existed with the others in harmony, though two species still have bad blood and tension between them…Vampires and Lycans. The two groups best known for their loathing for one another decided to close the gap of hatred between them with marriage. Though very much against it, the Vampire Prince of the North has been forced into a marriage, by his father, to the Alpha-Lycan Emperor of the South, in order to start a peaceful truce between their kinds. The prince has been sent to live with the Lycan Emperor only three days before their marriage is scheduled to transpire. Can two people who’ve never met before, and are so different from each other, find true love even after they’re married?

He would never hold land of his own, never rule, and his elder siblings would always take all the glory involved in wars and battles. Because of this Adrian has gotten used to being nothing more than a figurehead, he never voiced his opinions, never made any effort to succeed as an ambassador or form any sort of alliance with anyone important, after all, he held no sway or power. He had given up hope of finding any meaning or purpose, figuring that he would just be brushed away and forgotten in the confines of the castle or some remote estate, left to live in solitude and watch the world go by. He was shocked when his father announced that he would be the one to marry the Lycan Emperor though, and though he did make an effort to get out of it, he was ignored and the proceedings continued. Adrian isn’t shy or cold, he is simply used to being silent. He never voices an opinion or idea unless annoyed into it. He can actually be quite the curious young man when given the opportunity and he has a soft side for people who seemed trapped into something or in a situation where they are left without choice or consideration. People don’t tend to pay him any mind because he looks rather plain and never shows his emotion, but he has a way of hearing and knowing everything, a fact that some of his brothers used to their advantage, getting secrets from him and he has actually become rather knowledgable about politics and succeeding in them from his observations. There have been many times where he has guessed at the victor or outcome before others fully grasp the situation.

Adrian tilted his head ever so slightly as he watched Victor, he wasn’t sure, but he was starting to recognize little flashes of the emperor’s thoughts and emotions on his face. A slight softening at the corner of his eyes, a little upturn at the corner of his mouth. He wasn’t sure and probably wouldn’t be for a while, for all he knew, he was reading too much into Victor, but he thought it was there and it made watching the lycan interesting.

When he heard the age of the castle, Adrian raised his brows and there were appreciative murmurs from his brothers. Vampires had a tendency to like old things and places. So many of their kind lived for so long, it was always comforting to find something that went through history as well. Looking to Mariska, Adrian managed the faint blush for a second again while his family even his dad clearly found amusement in the thought of him actually having conversations with anyone. Quelling his embarrassment with a sip of blood, he glanced at the woman again. “I-I…..I’m afraid I may not be as…interesting a conversationalist as you hope my lady.” He said slowly, unsure of what to say and how.

When Victor finally turned his attention back to the king, Adrian sank back in his seat slightly, relieved to have the spotlight off of him for the moment. He really would’ve preferred to be sitting on the other side of his brothers and ignored again. He didn’t know enough about this place or these people to feel comfortable faking his way through like he’d had to a few times before, and combined with the fact that they clearly didn’t understand how low his social status was only made it all the more dangerous of a situation to be playing at. Just because his father was leaving didn’t mean that he couldn’t give his brothers orders on how to handle Adrian over the next three days.

The king straightened more in his seat, if that was even possible and raised his chin slightly. “Well, I won’t be here to sign the treaty that comes with this marriage, but my eldest, Marcus is here to sign instead. As he is the crown prince he has the authority to act in my stead on such matters.” He said, nodding towards the prince who sat next to Mariska. “Also, the courtiers that will remain to view the ceremony have with them a few valuables to give to you as a….marriage price of sorts for taking Adrian. It isn’t customary, but this is an unusual situation and we felt the need.” He said, taking a sip of his wine, eyes on Victor, judging his reactions closely.

It wasn’t until Jacob cleared his throat slightly that the king seemed to remember something else. “Oh yes, we will also require proof of Adrian’s well-being at least once a year. A vampire has never been left alone in your lands, and things can be strange and dangerous for a vampire as young as Adrian. I’m sure you’ll understand.” He added. His request clearly wasn’t made out of concern for Adrian though, but for the continued insurance that their treaty would remain intact.

Despite the off-handed way that this was all being talked about, Adrian didn’t react, just continued to sip from his glass and admire the etchings in it. He was used to such things and this was almost being kind, so he wasn’t about to complain or make a scene.

“Of course.” Victor replied, finishing off the remainder of his malt liquor, before his cup and plate were quickly cleared away by maid. “We will be sure to keep you updated on his well-being. However, I assure you his care will be of the utmost importance.”

He eyed Adrian for a brief moment, the corners of his mouth turning up ever-so-slightly in amusement. The boy seemed rather captivated by the etchings on the glass, appearing to ignore the undeserved treatment by his family. It irritated the lycan greatly, but he managed to hold his tongue and keep his composure nonetheless. A few of the other servants began clearing the rest of the table, bowing politely before taking the dishes away. Now that he thought about it, he would need to remember to purchase more blood for the young prince.

“It is a shame you will be unable to attend the ceremony, Your Highness.” Mariska stated with a slight smile, folding her hands on the table’s surface. “But I suppose you have more pressing matters to deal with back home.”

“Indeed.” Victor added, as he stood from his seat. He watched as the others at the table copied his actions, before looking over to Adrian. “Mariska…if you would be kind enough to show the others to their quarters? I will go ahead and escort Prince Adrian to his room.” He glanced towards Adrian’s father, and gave a curt nod. “Your Highness. It was a pleasure to meet you. I hope your return trip will be just as pleasant.”

The king nodded slightly to Victor’s words. He knew that Adrian would be looked after, at least for a while. But as long as Adrian was alive long enough people to grow used to the treaty, which was all that mattered to him. If Victor decided sometime in the future that he had tired of Adrian, it wouldn’t be any heartache for him. Looking to Mariska, he nodded, a faint smile ghosting over his lips. “Yes. A kingdom doesn’t slow down for anyone, even its king.” He said lightly.

Adrian had only been half listening at first, but had been forced to pay attention as his glass was taken away and he was again left sitting in between Victor and his father, and though the hostility had died down a bit, there was still some unease for him.

Standing as Victor did, he was prepared to follow the group, but instead Victor asked to accompany him alone. Of course it was to be expected to some extent, they were to be married in a few days, but he’d honestly thought he’d be ignored, no reason to try and talk to someone you were only marrying for the kingdom’s sake right? Bowing his head slightly at that, he felt the eyes of his family on him, a very intimidating sensation indeed.

The king paused when Victor said he would accompany Adrian. Giving a quick nod to the emperor, he let a fake smile spread over his face. “The pleasure is mine. If you don’t mind, I will say my goodbyes to my son.” He said softly, moving to stand a few feet from the table, waiting for Adrian to come over and angling away from Victor. “Your brothers will be here to insure you go through with this. I swear, if you messed this up…..I will make sure you regret ever being born for the rest of your life.” He murmured, voice soft enough that only Adrian would be able to hear. With that, he gave Adrian what could pass as a familiar pat on the shoulder before turning back to the others and speaking briefly with his other sons in front of Victor and Mariska.

Adrian remained standing where he’d been left though, fingers of one hand fisting at the hem of his shirt, unsure of what to do. Watching the much more congenial goodbyes of the rest of his family, he couldn’t help but feel completely embarrassed. He didn’t even want to look at Victor now, sure he was just going to grow more disappointed and annoyed with being saddled with Adrian.

Victor stood with his sister at his side, watching silently as the vampire king said his goodbyes to the other princes. Adrian simply stayed off the side, fiddling with his clothes nervously. The lycan did the best he could not the let a look of disdain appear on his face. Apparently Adrian’s father wasn’t aware of the fact that lycans had much superior hearing, especially true-bloods like himself and Mariska. Having heard what the king said to his son, he could only imagine how the boy was treated on a daily basis.

Although Victor himself was rather stern and gruff most of the time, he would never dream of saying anything remotely like that to his sister. Once the king left, and Mariska escorted the others away to their quarters, he walked over to Adrian, placing a strong hand on the boy’s shoulder.

“Follow me. I’ll show you to your room.” Victor said, removing his hand, and walking towards a door to the back of the dining room.

When he was sure the prince was following close behind, he continued through the door, and down a long wide hallway, decorated with varieties of paintings and other forms of artwork. About halfway down there was a turn that led to a fairly large open area with a wide staircase, leading up to the next level of the castle. All the while, Victor could smell the nervousness on the young prince. Well, it was to be expected with all that was currently going on. Once they reached Adrian’s room on the fourth floor, the emperor opened the door, and led him inside, the lights automatically turning on as they entered.

“I hope it is to your liking. If not there are plenty more to choose from.” Victor said, his voice rough and deep, but that was how it usually sounded most of the time anyway. “As you can see your belongings were already brought up. If you find yourself in want of anything just press that grey button on your bedside. My chambers are just down the hall if you need me.”

Looking down at young vampire, Victor gave the boy a small, and quite rare, smile. “Are there any questions you may have?”

Adrian had watched his brothers leave, a small part of him wishing he could follow them so that he wouldn’t be left alone so fast. But he didn’t say anything, just looking up when Victor touched his shoulder. Nodding slightly, he followed behind the emperor, allowing himself to try and ignore his nerves by examining the artwork. It really was rather magnificent, but he was so paranoid at the moment that he could appreciate it like he would like to.

Eyes widening slightly when he was shown his room, he had to pause and take it all in. It was much nicer and much larger than his room at his father’s castle. Of course he hadn’t wanted for most luxuries, but he had been relegated to the oldest parts of the castle. This was wonderful. Shaking his head slightly at Victor’s words, he began to walk around the room. “This is more than enough your majesty……” he said softly. Looking back to Victor and seeing the smile, he shyly returned it, bowing his head in respect and embarrassment. “I don’t believe so…..at least not right now.” He replied softly.

When he’d said that though, he felt an overwhelming urge to apologize for the meal and meeting though, and he didn’t really know why, especially since none of it had really been his fault. “Let me apologize for my father’s behavior your majesty…..he is not used to trying to earn respect from an equal….I think he forgets what it’s like to try and be pleasant.” He said softly, starting to fidget again.

Now that he’d started, he couldn’t stop. He had a few things he had to get off of his chest now in case they didn’t get a moment like this again. “I…..I am also sorry for any disappointment I may have caused you. I realize I am not what you may have expected or hoped for……but I do promise that I will not be a burden on you and Lady Mariska.” He added. Even though he’d needed to say that, it didn’t stop him from feeling stupid as the words left his lips. But it was all true. Victor was, despite the intimidating persona, a very handsome man, and from what he’d heard, a very capable ruler. He deserved much better than a useless prince whose own family and kingdom didn’t want him.

Victor nodded briefly, finding himself pleased to know the prince was happy with his room, though it may not have shown on his face. However, when the boy began to apologize the lycan found himself at a loss for words for at the moment. Why did the boy feel the need to say he was sorry for his father’s actions? It wasn’t as if Adrian had done anything wrong. But what really surprised the emperor was the fact that the prince continued on, also apologizing for…disappointing him?

Had the boy really become so used to apologizing that he did so for no apparent reason? No doubt the result of living with that father of his. His face stayed mostly stoic as he walked over the prince, who continued to bow his head. He placed a one hand on Adrian’s shoulder, while lifting the boy’s chin with the other.

“Stand up straight.” Victor stated with a very serious tone, though it held an underline sympathy of sorts. “You have nothing to apologize for, Prince Adrian. You are not a disappointment, nor are you a burden of any sort.”

He removed his hands from Adrian’s person, looking down at him as his stoical expression softened just a bit. “I don’t want to hear any more apologies from you on behalf of your family. Understood?”

With that said, he placed a strong hand on the shorter male’s head, ruffling Adrian’s hair slightly, before he turned to walk out the door. “Goodnight, and sleep well.” Closing the door behind him, he made his way back to his chambers for the night.

After everything that had happened that day, Victor decided that he had earned himself a good night’s sleep. Anything else that didn’t concern recent events could wait until tomorrow. After shedding his robes, he collapsed onto the rather large bed, fitted with silver and black sheets. He ran a hand through his hair, staring up at the canopy with tired eyes. Normally, he wasn’t this exhausted, but Victor had practically been running non-stop for the last five days, and he was more than ready to let sleep take over for tonight.

Adrian almost took a step back when Victor began to move towards him, sure that it couldn’t be anything good. But then his father popped into his head and he stood still, eyes still locked on the ground. Biting his lip as he felt the hand on his shoulder. Shocked as his chin was lifted, he met Victor’s eyes. Blushing faintly when he was told he wasn’t a burden, he nodded slightly. “I’m-“ he started to apologize when told to stop. Realizing that probably wasn’t the best idea, he simply gave another nod. “I understand.” He murmured.

Watching Victor leave, he wrapped his arms around himself. “Goodnight your majesty.” He replied. Waiting for the door to close and the footsteps to fade, he sighed. Running a hand through his hair, he turned, looking around without knowing what he wanted to do. He knew he needed to sleep, but he felt the need to be moving, felt trapped. Of course he figured that he’d feel like that for a while, until he finally accepted what was going on.

Pacing his room, he let his mind wander, reviewing everything that had happened through the day and all of the things he could’ve done differently. Eventually letting himself sit down on the end of the bed, he finally began to think about Victor. The lycan would be his husband in a few days. He knew the stories told about him in his homeland, but Victor had seemed pleasant enough so far, almost kind to him. Sure he was intimidating, but Adrian was sure he could get used to that….or at least he hoped he could.

Finally deciding he couldn’t let himself worry any more for the night, he stripped off the top layer of his clothing. Laying down, he curled up in the bed. It wasn’t his home. Of course he wasn’t welcome at his home any more. Going back meant he’d failed. Sighing, he forced the thoughts from his mind. He couldn’t let himself linger. He had to learn and adjust. Telling himself he’d be fine over and over, he eventually drifted into a light, fitful sleep.

The following morning Victor woke to a slight throbbing in his head as the early rays of sunlight hit his face. He reached up a single hand, rubbing his temples with disdain. He had never been a big fan of mornings, and after his stress-filled week he disliked them even more. He was just about to throw a pillow over his face when the doors of his chambers suddenly flew open, and in barged his sister Mariska.

She had a bright smile on her face, way to energetic for his liking at this point of the day. She quickly made her way over to the side of his bed, and plopped down on it. Had it been anyone else Victor would’ve thrown them out the nearest window. He looked up at his younger sister with a tired smirk.

“Why are you still in bed?” She asked, reaching down to poke him on the cheek. “You need to get up. It’s almost time for breakfast. Now get dressed.”

Victor rolled his eyes slightly. “And if I refuse?” He responded jokingly.

“I will proceed to drag you out of here by your hair.” Mariska replied, arching a single eyebrow as she shoved him gently. “Now get your butt up. I’ve already told Adrian that you’d escort him to breakfast, while I gather the others.”

“Alright, I’m up. Get going.” The emperor groaned, nudging his sister with his elbow. “I’ll be down shortly with Adrian.”

She smiled, leaning down to place a small kiss to her brother’s cheek, before leaving his chambers. Begrudgingly, he slid out of bed, and proceeded to take a quick shower. After which he dressed himself in robes of black with sliver trimming, not bothering to fully dry his slightly damp hair. With a tired sigh, Victor left his chambers, and headed down to Adrian’s room. He couldn’t help but wonder if the young vampire slept well the night before, but doubted it as soon as the though entered his head. It was the boy’s first night staying in a completely new setting, so he was bound to have trouble starting out. It was to be expected after all. When he came to Adrian’s door, he knocked a few times before entering, knowing that Mariska had woken the boy up previously, before her intrusion of his own chambers.

Adrian had already been drifting in and out of consciousness when he’d heard the knock on his door and Mariska had popped her head in. Thanking her for waking him, he got up and began to prepare for the day. Taking a shower and making sure he looked presentable, he dressed in the clothing that had been picked out for him for the day. Before he’d left, he’d been told exactly what to wear each day, the king wanting him to look his best through the days leading up to the wedding. Today it was the traditional tunic and pants of his kingdom in deep greens with a few highlights of gold. He personally hated these clothes, preferring the simpler clothes he normally wore in only a handful of colors, but his brothers knew what he was to wear and he didn’t want to guess at what they’d do if he decided not disobey.

When Victor wasn’t in the hall after he was done, Adrian went back to his room and peeked out of the curtains. Seeing a beautiful garden laid out before him, he slowly sat on the bench in front of the window. Purebred vampires could handle the sun much better than their turned brethren, but they generally didn’t like it all that much. Adrian liked it however since he knew his family usually didn’t want to bother him enough to follow him into it. After a few moments of enjoying the view, he retrieved his sketchbook from where he’d hidden it in a bag. Glancing at the door again, he set about sketching the view outside. He knew it wasn’t a very princely hobby and he’d been yelled at about it for nearly as long as he’d been drawing, but it was one of the few things he enjoyed and no one could really do anything to stop him.

He let himself get so lost in the drawing that he forgot he was expecting someone. When the knock came on the door, he jumped and his sketchbook slid from his lap, pictures scattering everywhere. Cursing under his breath, he quickly tried to pick them all up, but Victor came in before he could. Looking up at the emperor, he bit his lip. “Um…..good morning?” he said slowly. Blushing he quickly went back to trying to pick all of his pictures. “I’m sorry….I just dropped my book.” He mumbled, slipping the pictures back between the pages of his book as fast and as neatly as he could.

When Victor walked through the door he was somewhat surprised to fine the prince on his knees, picking up scattered sheets of paper. He blinked a couple of times before walking over towards the boy, leaning down on one knee to help Adrian gather up the pages. Once they were all cleared, he stood back up to his full height, eyes gazing over the stack he had collected.

They were drawings, quite beautiful ones as a matter of fact. The lines were very well executed, and the amount of detail put into them was absolutely astounding. Though he didn’t look like it the type, Victor was an avid art collector and enthusiast. However, with his cold stern demeanor no one would’ve believed it. Reaching a hand out, he helped Adrian back to his feet, before handing the boy back his artwork.

“No apology necessary.” Victor replied, giving the boy the tiniest of smiles. “Those are very exquisite pieces, Prince Adrian.” He added, his expression going back to its normal stoic state.

“Now, if you would please accompany me.” He continued on, shoving his hands into the pockets of his robes. “It’s nearly time for breakfast. I’m certain my sister has already gathered your brothers in the dining hall by now.”

With that said, he turned around to hold the door open for Adrian, and they both left the room. Once in the dining hall, they took their respective seats; Victor at the head of the table with Adrian to his right. Mariska and the other vampires also were seated accordingly as they were served their specific dishes; blood for the vampires as per usual. He and Mariska, however, were served a protein scramble made up of eggs and nearly-rare sausage, with a few other ingredients mixed in with it all. Shortly after they all started eating, Mariska was the first to start any sort of conversation.

“So, Prince Adrian…did you sleep comfortably last night.” She asked with her normal cheery smile. “I do hope you room was to your liking.”

Adrian was beyond embarrassed when Victor came over to help pick up the pictures. He hadn’t planned on ever letting Victor find out he drew, yet here he was helping him clean up his mess. “You didn’t have to….” He murmured, not looking at Victor as he picked up his sketches. Slowly standing as Victor did, he hid the drawings in his hand away before looking at Victor nervously. Watching him look over the drawings, he was shocked by the compliment. “Really? I-I mean thank you.” He said softly. No one had complimented him on his drawings before.

Blinking when Victor spoke about breakfast, he nodded quickly. “Of course.” He said softly. Looking around for a moment, he quickly hid his sketchbook away in a drawer of the desk in the room before returning to Victor’s side and following him out again. Trailing a few steps behind him like someone of lower rank might, he was again amazed by the palace. He hoped that he might have to opportunity to explore after the wedding. He’d have to see if he would be allowed to do that should they get more of a chance to talk in private.

Adrian was hesitant to take his seat again, but slowly sat when it seemed that no one would protest. Thanking the servant who brought his glass in, he glanced curiously at the food laid out in front of the lycans. He hadn’t had much experience with being around proper food before and it really was strange to see it.

Looking up when Mariska spoke to him, he smiled slightly. “The room is very nice. Thank you…..and the view is stunning.” He said lightly, making a point of not looking at his brothers for their reactions. Biting his lip, he paused for a moment, thinking about his next words. “I would like to see more of the palace and gardens at some point. I am intrigued by what little I have seen thus far.”

“I’m very pleased to hear that.” Mariska replied, practically beaming with delight as she clasped her hands together. “Victor has a pretty busy schedule today, but he will have some time off around noon tomorrow. I’m sure he will be more than happy to give you a tour then. Wouldn’t you, Victor?”

“Certainly.” The emperor replied, before gulping down a rather large amount of coffee from his glass. He didn’t necessarily need to have the caffeinated beverage, but he was rather fond of the taste. Victor stared at the young prince from behind the glass, eyeing the boy for a brief moment. He had to admit…he was rather curious about Adrian, and wondered if there were any other talents hidden behind the boy’s wary nature. “I don’t see why not? This is now your house as well.”

“Splendid!” The female exclaimed with a bright smile.

Victor gave his younger sister a small smirk as he finished off the remainder of his plate, before it was quickly taken away. He turned his attention back towards the young vampire, attempting to not look as stern as he usually did.

“Prince Adrian...since I have many preparations for the wedding to look after, I’ve asked Mariska to look after you for the day.” He stated with a slight nod. “She will also be briefing you on our customs, traditions, and how the ceremony will take place.”

“I will be fitting you for your robes as well.” Mariska added, obviously excited about it all.

Victor rolled his eyes slightly, albeit briefly for it to go unnoticed by his sister. She was way too enthusiastic about this whole ordeal, but that’s just the way she was.
