User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The time was night. Well, not technically night. The sun was still out and shining brightly. But the turtle was blind, or damn near it, and so it was probably night to him. That wasn't why he was lolling around uselessly on his back though.

User Image Bitter Heartbeat had left his pet in a small alcove near the edge of a pond. He had decided to go off to fish in another part of the swamp -- near but not so near that he'd be able to see his turtle. He had been firm in his command that the turtle stay (regardless of the fact it never seemed to do anything of the kind). And then he had gone. (To fish; not forever.)

The turtle had munched lazily on reeds for a time. Then done... Well, whatever it is turtles do until he had begun to amble off. Unfortunately it had gone straight toward the water, dropped its front feet into a shallow hole, and flipped onto its back.

How long ago that had been, who knew. As it was now the water was starting to draw the poor thing out...

Food, skulls, or anything green or owlcat related, in tow did it go. As River-Swollen and him were awful hunters, and not the best of foragers, it was best not to ask how they fed themselves. Through the kindness of others, they claimed. Blatant theft was more accurate, but they weren't keen on details on things other than their precious decorated skulls in which they sold. And so when he chanced upon the turtle on its back, he had no qualms whatsoever bringing it home. With nary a stop in his gait, he scooped up the turtle to his humble clearing.

A short while later, he left the turtle amid a pile of skulls for safekeeping. The owlcats would keep it safe. Unfortunately one deemed it the perfect napping space in the afternoon sun. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Bitter Heartbeat had been shockedterrifiedincensed to find his turtle gone. Gone. In his overemotional state, it had made it pathetically difficult to find the trail of the thief. But once he had, he'd set off with a determined scowl.

It did not seem the clearing was far from the pond, as he peeked his head through the brush. "Bump! Bump!" he hissed, eyes scanning the area. He huffed a breath of annoyance, as if a -- his -- turtle could respond.

The buck forced his way into the clearing and frowned. There didn't seem to be anyone here.

Not a clue, but I suppose Glossbones stole the turtle and it became the beginning of a beautiful friendship?

The napping owlcat yawned and stretched in annoyance. Its fur stood on end. TRESPASSER! it hissed to his comrades. Jumping from the turtle surrounded by bones, he went to find Glossbones or the brown one. She scared him, but was a fierce poker of things with her stick.

Deep in thought, Glossbones' tail scooped up some sand and he watched the small granules and sun flit through his well and hairy tail. He was thinking of how to best eat and cook the turtle. It wasn't like he had a fire salamander. Perhaps some live burying or salting would help. The fact that it was still alive was troublesome. Interrupted, he looked at the curious owlcat that beckoned him to follow. Leaving the sands for another time, he ventured forward and saw the red buck. Crap. The shop wasn't much to look at as they were between seasons and the two Mares hadn't been around in a while. Strange how they had become dependent on them for food, patronage and companionship. Curiouser and curiouser.

"Can I help you?" he asked, hoping to not start the tense red buck.

He didn't notice the owlcat. In fact, he didn't notice his turtle on which the owlcat had been slumbering. Indeed as soon as his eyes began to reach the pile of skulls--

"Can I help you?"

Bitter Heartbeat nearly leapt out of his skin as he shifted to find the speaker. "Where is my turtle?" The words wavered at first then grew in strength as the buck narrowed his eyes and locked his knees.

Glossbones looked on the buck with a look of pained dismay. With ribs sticking out, it was no secret that food didn't come by so easily. Loathe to give up on his ill-gotten gain, he said nothing. Of course he would give the turtle back, but were the other buck's knees shaking? And didn't he see the squealing turtle, still on its back, next to the pile of bones?

Sighing, Glossbones' mind played out various scenarios. Kicking the dirt, he admitted it without the help of a fire salamander, the turtle would be quiet chewy and hard on the digestive system. "Your turtle must have followed me home" he suggested nonchalantly. "He is playing with the skulls it seems." Never had the swamp seen a more downtrodden buck. He sighed once more and walked to the pile of skulls, trying to covertly lick his lips as he looked down.

Once he had found the turtle amongst the skulls and was satisfied his pet was not injured, he turned his attention to the buck. He didn't believe the turtle had followed the thief. The damn thing was near blind and could barely follow his owner. But reunited, the anger began to clear, and he noticed the sorry state the buck was in. A state he, himself, had once been in.

"Do you like fish?" he asked. As much as his naming dream taunted him -- caiman and crocodiles tearing him apart -- he could fish.

Ehhh, Glossbones mentally stuttered for he was still bemoaning the loss of slimy reptile meat and the usefulness of a turtle shell. His ears twitched. And puffed out his chest in a silly attempt to seem bigger and plumper than he really was.

"Yes, yes, I fish" he pushed out a little too eagerly. Nearby, as if sensing the large pile of s**t the green buck would soon be eating, two green owlcats chittered and heckled to themselves before diving back into the pile of skulls and bones.

Glossbones coughed. "There's a stream opening over here unless you prefer somewhere else?"

The buck's look was dubious at best. He hadn't meant them to fish together, merely thought if Glossbones looked that undernourished, he could use something to eat. But if the other buck wanted to attempt it...

"Here is fine. My previous spot only netted a missing turtle," he volleyed, lips twisted to the side.

He turned briefly to his turtle who had barely moved, "Stay here."

Glossbones noted to himself to cease pilfering so close to his home. Foal mistake surely. To be sure his sister River-Swollen would not fall to the same line of thought as he, Glossbones picked up a necklace of daisies and placed it around the turtle. It would be better for all if his sister mistook the turtle as a new pet or at least off-limits from senseless consumption.

"Ok!" he replied way too cheerfully, hoping his enthusiasm would hide the fact he was an utter failure at it. Reasoning told him to compensate for his inadequacies. "This is a good spot." He was stalling.

Undernourished and obnoxiously cheerful. He cringed and looked to the spot the buck indicated. His brows rose then creased in doubt. It was a damn mud puddle. (Granted it was a large mud puddle.) At best ankle deep and surely no fish.

"How about we try over there?" he suggested, lifting a hoof to point a kimeti-length away at a stretch of stream.

OK. Maybe there was more to fishing than just finding water and hoping something would jump into his mouth.

"Yes, yes. That sounds like a grand plan. I have a very nice tail I can add shells to it to make it into a bait?"

Bitter Heartbeat stared, perplexed, with his mouth beginning to fall open. Shells? Oi. An audible click of his teeth followed a shake of his head. He'd heard of tails being used, of course, but shells to make it more enticing? He had a feeling that would not work.

"Fish usually prefer bugs or worms...," he started. He didn't typically use bait. His method was as simple as waiting and leaning to use a hoof or his mouth to catch one.

"How about I catch the first one? As an, uh, apology for accusing you of theft?" Even as he said it, his face scrunched up. An apology to the buck who had stolen his turtle was ludicrous but then this buck wasn't about to admit he was hopeless, either.

Glossbones' eyes slid to the side briefly before acquiescing. "Yes, yes."

Inwardly he groaned. He was becoming a "yes" buck, one his sister would raze him rightfully so over. While he watched the other buck fish, Glossbones' thoughts ran to what they could do with the fishbones. Though small and delicate, when grasped with clenched teeth, they could puncture holes into leaves or flayed skin. Maybe the scales could be crushed up for sparkly pigment even. The options were limitless. Why yes, it would be a wonderful if he could also use the wings of dragonflies. On and on his mind whirled while oblivious to the labor Bitter heartbeat was intent on completing.

The buck focused on his task, wading into the waters, and tamped down forcefully on the jolt of memory from his naming dream. Now was not the time. He had fish to catch.

It did not take long before he had caught one fish by the tail and he tossed it back towards the green buck. A school of fish seemed to be going by as he took to stomping his hooves into the masses. Three fish stilled and he tossed them, too, to Glossbones.
