_________ raindrops keep falling on my head.

Here is where the shinobi of Amegakure come to rest and get treated for any after battle wounds that were inflicted during battle. This place is also used for shinobi who wish to become specialists in the medical division.

User ImageBy no means was she one of those superpowered medical ninjas, but there was no way that this nurse was going to be put down by her lackluster physical prowess. She was still a trained member of the hospital staff and she damn well knew how to do her job. She strode with confidence up to the reception desk of the hospital lobby, her diligent steps giving the illusion that she was in a hurry. Anyone who could see the lobby, though, would notice that there wasn't much to hurry for. It was empty, and in all reality, the hospital was experiencing a rather slow week. However, this woman certainly wasn't going to let the peace lull her into a false sense of security. At any moment, there could be an emergency that would require immediate attention. It was just the reality of a job centered around reactive rather than preventative action.

She reached the reception desk and slipped into it, exchanging greetings and getting caught up on the general affairs of the hospital. Nothing new in the time she had been busy cleaning up the mess in a patient's room. There were a couple new patients, ninjas who had rather nasty run-ins during their missions, and some of the stay-in patients had a few problems, but it was all either already settled or being settled by other members of the staff.

(OOC: In the previous episode, we learned that Orias could not handle sass from someone younger than him! Now, what will he do with this new encounter? Will he manage to hold a conversation for longer than two minutes? Can he talk with someone without wanting to kill them and drain their blood? Stay tuned to find out!)

"I would like some solitary practice in medical techniques," Hana requested the young man who watched over the lobby in the hospital, an individual she was familiar with from her frequent work in the hospital.
He gave a familiar smile of recognition to Hana before replying, "Sure thing, Hana. Let's see here. We have a few patients that are really desperate to get out and show the world what they're made of, so they're willing to be used as practice dummies for training medics. That fit your bill?".
Hana nodded in approval, "Sure, I'll try my best to not mess up."
"Alright, then they're yours," the receptionist jotted down a few things before handing Hana with a slip of paper, "That has all the information you need. Room numbers, names, and all. Good luck!"
"Thank you!" Hana replied gratefully as she turned to meet the first patient.

Chiyute No Jutsu: Karui (Healing Hands Technique: Minor) B
The user concentrates chakra into their hands creating a ball of healing chakra. This chakra when concentrated will repair physical damage to another person. This is the first stage of Chiyute taught to all medical-nin, it is not possible to advance past stage three without this technique. The effects of this technique are limited to superficial cuts and injuries though it can reduce the severity of more serious injuries.

The first patient on the list was actually quite… not what Hana expected. He seemed in fine health, actually. She was expecting people with more handicapping injuries. From what Hana could see, his only problem was a portion of his arm that was bandaged. Like anyone would, he noticed Hana's confusion. In fact, he seemed quite used to it and greeted with a sheepish, "Well, hello. You must be quite confused?". [1/7]

Hana nodded silent assent. "You see," the man explained his situation, "I just have a small scratch, but my blood doesn't clot properly so I need to stay in the hospital where the medics can make sure I don't bleed to death. It's a bit troublesome to wait for just a small cut, though, so I always ask to be put on the list for trainees." [2/7]

"You seem quite used to this," Hana observed as she took a seat next to the man and began observing his arm. A quick run of Diagnosis showed that everything this man had just said was right. Beneath the bandage, there was just a small cut. It had been clotted, likely by a medical jutsu, but the clot was already starting to break up. [3/7]

"Yes," the man verified that he came into the hospital with this condition very often, "I'm also used to all of the trainees coming in giving me a weird look when they see me. Haha!". He looked on as Hana undid his bandages and revealed the clotted wound. [4/7]

Hana lay the man down on the bed and asked him to relax and then she focused her chakra. An image of the hand signs she would need drifted into her mind alongside and image of what her jutsu would need to do. The clot could remain where it was. Once the skin had healed, it would fall of naturally. [5/7]

The hand seals were cast and now a ball of glowing energy was resting in between Hana's hands. She breathed carefully. Making sure to not lose her focus on the chakra. Gently, she moved the chakra over to the man's arm. [6/7]

Chakra came in contact with skin, enveloping the cut in a warm glow. Straining, Hana focused on accelerating the regeneration of the skin and blood vessel. A heavy frown weighed down her face and she was visibly sweating. It took several minutes, but when the glow faded from Hana's hands, the small cut had healed and the scab, as she had predicted, had fallen off. Feeling like she had just dragged a wagon full of bricks up a hill, Hana breathed out heavily and leaned back in her chair. Such a small healing job was leaving her this exhausted. Hana wondered how she was ever going to get anything done in the middle of a battle. "Good job," the man congratulated, "Ahhh. Back to work now!". [7/7]

Chiyute no Jutsu (Healing Hands Technique) B
A Ninjutsu technique where the ninja focuses chakra into the palms of their hands, creating a small ball of healing chakra. This chakra, when concentrated, can repair physical damage to another person. This is the more advanced level of Chiyute no Jutsu, used by Chuunin and is required to advance to level five. A Chuunin has learned to use Chiyute no Jutsu with greater control and efficiency and it is now possible to treat deep serious injuries that might otherwise result in death from bleeding.

The next patient was much more in line with what Hana expected. She lay in bed with stitches covering what had been a large gash. The gash was slowly starting to naturally heal, but the antsy patient's constant moving told Hana that this patient probably wanted to heal it immediately. [1/7]

Hana's thoughts were clear as day on her face, in the form of a rather amused smile. When the patient noticed, she let out an irritated, "Hey, what do you think you're grinning about?! Looking all smug and everything… Hurry up and heal me!". [2/7]

The harsh comments shocked Hana into attention. In fact, she actually saluted the patient before scurrying over and quickly diagnosing the situation. It was a pretty nasty wound even if it had been stabilized. Minor Healing Hands won't cut it this time. Hana needed the Healing Hands Technique to quickly close the wound. She formed the hand signs and did her best to concentrate on the ball of healing energy forming in her hands. A small sphere formed and slowly grew. Hana was sweating with the sheer effort of concentration, but even that wasn't enough to prevent the healing jutsu from fizzling out before it got strong enough. [3/7]

The patient, who had been watching the whole time, let out a string of curses that left Hana cowering. However, when she was done, her words were more encouraging then abusive, "Well?! Stop looking at me like I'm sort of raging drunkard and try it again! You can't possibly think you'll be able to learn without practicing until you're half-dead, huh?!". Although, they were still pretty scary. To punctuate her point, she spit out the open hospital window right next to her and grumbled something about how this whole damn thing was taking too much time. [4/7]

Hana focused as she went through the hand signs again. Slowly, carefully, she laid out the foundations for the jutsu. It started as nothing but a small speck before spinning into a little bigger. More and more she concentrated her chakra. [5/7]

For a while, the ball of chakra did not grow, but not because Hana had stopped adding chakra to make the jutsu stronger. Instead of just layering the chakra on and letting the sphere grow, she had slowed her pace so that she could carefully condense all the chakra, keeping it at a more manageable size, one that wasn't at risk going crazy and losing all of the chakra. [6/7]

Now that Hana had wrapped countless threads of healing chakra into a sizable ball, she placed the chakra over the stitched wound. The pinched gash swiftly healed. Not immediately, but within minutes, the only trace of a wound were the stitches that were part of the original treatment. As soon as she felt like her body was as good as new, the patient jumped out of bed, nearly toppling Hana off her chair. She performed several vigorous stretches, and when her body checked out, she gave Hana's head a rough rub. "Great job little girl!" she boisterously praised, seeming much more happy now but no less rough, "And only on your second try, too! Now that's what I call talent!." [7/7]

Chakra no Mesu (Chakra Scalpel)
A Ninjutsu technique used, primarily, for field surgery. The ninja concentrates a powerful aura of chakra around their hand, creating a blade capable of tearing through muscles and arteries, or breaking bone, without actually breaking the skin of the person they're using it on. This technique can also be used to repair the chakra system in a patient if for some reason it has been damaged. When used offensively, in combat, it is difficult to concentrate on the length and power of the scalpel, making it harder to successfully hit an enemy's arteries, ensuring a kill.

As Hana left the patient's room, she heard a rather cheery voice call her name. She turned to the source, and responded with an equally cheery, "Oh, hey there!" and smile, "What are you here for?".
"Perfect, I was looking for you," the source of the voice replied. He was the nurse receptionist that Hana was talking to when she first entered the hospital. He wasn't done speaking, of course, "Look what I got!"
"A… fish?" Hana replied accurately, her face twisted in confusion. [1/7]

"Correct!" the receptionist confirmed, "You're going around learning medical jutsus, right? I know a lot of genin eventually come back asking how they're supposed to learn the chakra scalpel technique. As a favor, I figured I'd prepare it for you in advance!"
Hana eyes squinted in thought as she slowly figured out what was happening, "So what you're saying is… I perform surgery on the fish?"
"Mhm! Let's go, I was on my way to an empty surgery room!" and off the nurse led the way. [2/7]

Entering the surgery room, Hana looked around with raised eyebrows, "Are you sure this is alright?".
Flopping the fish ceremoniously onto the bed (of course, after the bed had been fully prepared), the nurse responded, "Of course! This isn't an emergency surgery room and there are no appointments for it today. It'll take just a few minutes for you to learn and a few more to clean up, right? No one will need to know."
"So what you're saying is we don't have permission, huh?" Hana gave an unbelieving smile but stepped up to the fish nevertheless.
Mischievously putting a finger to deviously smiling lips, the nurse repeated, "No one will need to know," his tone quickly changed back to cheery and careless, "Now!... Wait, where's your book? How have you been practicing medical jutsus without a scroll or something?" [3/7]

Hana's index finger traced the fish's skin, as she replied, "Don't need it. I've memorized all the hand signs and descriptions." Her eyes looked thoughtfully at the carcass.
"So I guess I can trust you know what to do?" the nurse asked to be sure.
A nod, "Chakra scalpel is so useful because you can pinpoint what it effects. So I'll just poke this fish with the scalpel. Try to pierce the side of the fish touching the table without piercing the other side of the fish."
"Then I leave it to you," the nurse replied, tucking both arms behind his head and walking to a corner of the room, "I'll just be here and wait until you're done so I can help you with cleanup. I'm on break anyways." [4/7]

All the receptionist got for a response was an absentminded, "Mhm," because already Hana was busy figuring out how best to implement theory in practice. The core of this technique was utilizing a type of chakra that was the polar opposite of healing. Like healing chakra, it only affected muscles, skins, bones, and whatever else made up living things, but instead of healing it, it caused them to rapidly deteriorate. [5/7]

Hand signs were cast and Hana formed chakra, trying to visualize a life-taking rather than a life-giving aura, around her hand. Even this first step took at least a minute, but Hana still felt like she was slowly getting better at concentrating bigger and bigger amounts of the delicate chakra used in eiseijutsu. Experimentally, she stabbed the fish, but rather than piercing anything, it looked like she had actually healed the fish of some minor bruises, making it look overall more attractive to eat. [6/7]

Sighing in frustration, Hana tried several more times. The second time, she had succeeded, but when she moved on to trying to pierce the fish without breaking the skin for the third attempt, she ended up healing the fish again. She ended up practicing just piercing the fish through completely several times to get the hang of the destructive chakra. It required several repeats, which were only achieved by Hana painstakingly healing the fish before its dead body became too damaged to be recovered by her meager skills, before Hana felt like she could reliably differentiate between destructive and healing chakra. The chakra control practice she earned from all of those attempts made the last step of controlling the destructive chakra so that it only targeted certain parts of the fish's body much easier. [7/7]

By the end of the session, she was thoroughly exhausted, and nearly collapsed on the fish. Chuckling slightly, Hana's nurse friend cleaned up by himself and then slowly led Hana to the rest room.

The hospital was quiet. There were still people working, of course, but it was the skeleton crew of a night shift that wasn't expecting any emergencies. Hana had already told the receptionist up front that she was expecting a guest, Orias the Vladian, and that if he came, he should be directed to where the blood was stored.

At the moment, Hana was sorting through some documents and other paperwork so that she could be ready to check out a bag of blood if Orias did came. She had already selected which blood types were the least in demand and the highest in stock. Otherwise, well, it never hurt to periodically ensure that everything was organized correctly. She couldn't run thorough tests or anything, but at the very least, she could make sure everything was where it was all supposed to be according to the labels.

The door to the room Hana was working in was left open, an invitation for anyone who needed her or the room to come in. Of course, the inside of the room was well-lit, with all the lights turned on. Although, the hallway directly outside of it was dark, as expected of any portion of the hospital not being used after hours. Hopefully, as a ninja, Orias wouldn't have any problem traversing the dark halls. If he did have problems, though, then hopefully, as a ninja, Orias would be smart enough to use the light switches located at the each end of the hall.

It was rare that he came outside. For once, to boost solidarity and show symbolism, actually wore the robes of a kage. Armand, sharingan always active, followed a faint trail of chakra, aiming to find a medical shinobi. The interns usually pointed him in the right direction.

It was dark, mostly. The hospital was quiet at this time of night. Finally ending up in a lit room, Armand hailed the young woman working to get things organized and in order. Finally, a genin with initiative and a work ethic. "Miss Im." Armand spoke to her, addressing her directly and concisely.

She had, of course, sensed the kage approaching. It was hard to believe that he was coming for her, but the closer he got, the more likely it became. When he addressed her as she continued to work, only then did it become perfectly clear that, yes, he had been looking for her.

Hana stood at attention when she was called. She didn't seem all, too, surprised, but neither did she seem fully prepared, a bag of type AB+ blood still in her hands. After all, while she had been expecting someone, it certainly wasn't the Amekage himself.

"Lord Amekage," she formally returned the greeting, "Can I help you with something?".

"For a genin, you show much initiative. Skill and initiative. And, from what my people tell me...a good heart. I can respect those attributes." The Amekage's sharingan pierced into her, not turning his gaze away for a second.

"I need somebody I can trust. Somebody who has the best interest of this village at heart. An assistant, I guess would be the word. I'd like that person to be you, Miss Im. As somebody who's but a mortal man who can succumb like any other man to the temptations of power...I need somebody to keep me grounded if the need should arise. The angel on the right shoulder."

Armand tried to smile, genuinely. Though, he wasn't very good at it. It probably looked rather lopsided. "Does this sound like a job you'd want to tackle?"

                                                                    (Chakra): 350/350

"Hm? Ah," realization lit up Hana's face as she stared straight into the kage's sharingan, perhaps being a bit too trusting for her own good, "Thank you, but I don't think it's quite what you think. I'm actually just waiting for someone here and figured I'd double check things while getting a few things for this other person." Hana returned Armand's smile, lopsided as it was, with her own, a bright but appropriate smile to use when in the presence of the leader of the village. She continued, "I am honored that the Amekage thinks so highly of me, but if it's a secretary you need, then wouldn't Masako Chiru be a better choice? Compared to someone like me, who can empathize with even the enemy, I believe that she will be better at keeping the village's best interests at heart. If, even while knowing that I will prioritize saving a life over taking sides, you would still like me to be the angel on your right shoulder, then what else can I say? I will gratefully accept your proposal under those circumstances." When all was said, Hana ended her lengthy explanation with a bow. It would be the first time her eye's left Armand's since the beginning of the conversation.

And on the contrary, Miss Im, somebody who can show empathy in the face of adversity is exactly the kind of person I'm looking for. The fact that we, as a people, are willing to care for all life and try to understand them is what sets us apart from those in the borderlands." Hana's explanation of herself continued to fit Armands needs more and more. With tensions high and an inherently violent military body, Amegakure was in need of healers and good natured people.

"Make no mistake, you'll be much more than a secretary. You'll be accompanying me on diplomatic outreaches to settlements or helping me provide aid to the sick and wounded in the borderlands. And, if push comes to shove, you'll be flying high with me over battlefields, looking for our wounded that need attention."

At that very moment, a courier rushed through the hospital, appearing shaken and informing The Amekage of the sudden invasion. "Thank you. You're dismissed. Get somewhere safe." He told them and looked to Hana. "Unfortunately for us both, push has indeed come to shove. I know it's very sudden, so I can't ask you to do this if you are afraid. Just know that we could use you out there. Come with me if you want to show these borderlanders what Amegakure is about. I have no doubt that the one you're waiting for is off to the fighting as well."

Followed or not, Armand would create a clay bird for them to fly on and then take off. Be it alone or with Hana, it was her choice.

(OOC: UGH. TYLER. This was supposed to be a timeline, so please forgive the following fudging.)

Timeline Hana did not move because this was a goddamn timeline. The version of her Tyler should have met was the non-Timeline Hana, the one that was sleeping. Therefore, she would illogically ignore Tyler's invitation to go to the battlefield and the invasion wouldn't be actually happening to her timelining self. Although, we can say that everything up to that point happened. Sigh...

INSTEAD

[ NOT TIMELINE ]

Sirens and alarms jolted Hana out of her tired sleep. She was up in a flash, taking the alarms, drill or not, seriously. Outside, personnel and patients were rushing to and fro. Hana registered as she quickly donned the outer layer of clothes she had stripped before getting into bed and rushed out to join the crowd.

Meeting one of the heads of the hospital who was directing the chaos, quick words were exchanged between the two. The hospital had its hands full preparing for the incoming flood of injured from an attack at the gates, but more importantly, it needed people to bring those still stuck outside into the safety of the hospital. It had a few patients from the attack already, but there were no doubt even more out there. Hana understood the situation and headed out with all haste.

✝ " I search for salvation

[timeline]

Orias had left for the hospital right after Hana had left, intending to be there as soon as possible. However, due to his own feelings of righteousness and superiority he decided to make her wait a little. Being fashionably late was one of his favorite things to do, walking into a room and seeing shocked faces of the people around him. Mouths twisted into cruel frowns, beady eyes glaring at him under furrowed brows. How delectable their hate and suffering was, it was beautiful. That’s why, as he walked through the Hospital, Orias felt the same sort of demonic glee. Every room had a hurt, a wounded, a sick, or even a dying person. Children occupied a few of them, watching television as their broken legs and arms were resting on pillows, their parents by their bedsides. Part of the hostpital was for those who were terminally ill. The elderly whose memory was faiding and madness growing, ninja who had tried to fight valiantly but fail, and finally children whom the ‘God’ of this world decided would pay the sins of their parents. Children, who though existed in a veil of pure innocence and love, were given a life that ripped into their sanity, their minds, their hearts. Abuse, rape, suicide, neglect, punishments that represented the sins that their parents had committed all throughout their life were being transferred onto their children like a sacrificial lamb unto an altar. Like Kya and himself bore the sins of their father. Darkness rushed the every corner of his mind, seeping deeper into the folds of memories while sending pictures of his past to the forefront of his mind. No, now was not the time to think about this. Not the time to face the shadows lingering in the past.

A light, like a beacon, marked his sensory radar as he made his way through the white wash halls to where Hana was staying. She appeared to be in the very heart of the hospital, a valuable place not wanted to be pierced. Step by step, his footsteps echoed through the halls that grew exponentially sparse until a slight scent drifted into his nostrils. The effect was literally state changing. The golden eyes grew wide and the irises grew thinner and taller until they resembled a snake. His back tensed into a sharp upright position while his mouth slightly opened to reveal the elongating teeth. Around him, his body hummed with the energy of a hunt. Energy that gave him the perception of a taught string, ready to release it all within a second. Turning into a room, he just had time to get a glimpse of the bags of blood and Hana before his senses exploded. Chakra, so much chakra was gathering outside the village gates. These weren’t the same chakra signatures that seemingly existed within the Barbarian encampments. Wait…he was wrong. They weren’t the same but they were oh so familiar in their feel. Whereas the others that they had fought had been focused on pure battle, bloodlust, and destruction, these were trained warriors. Leading them, was a being more dangerous than Orias thought could ever exist.

With a few hopefully smart movements, Orias rushed downwards into what seemed like a basement. Grabbing a chain he wrapped it around the handle and sealed it with his blood. Suddenly he was all alone, sitting in a dark room, moisture lingering along the ceiling as he wanted to rip apart everyone outside. After a few hours had passed, Orias left and walked upwards to where Hana was. ”Hello Hana, I would have talked to you sooner but…problems arrived.”

Time shenaniganery. That was honestly the easiest way to explain everything, but hey, no one's watching, so why sweat it over the small things? Amirite?

Hana had caught onto Orias's chakra signature as he approached. Of course she would. She was waiting for him after all. But then he suddenly rushed downstairs and did not leave. She couldn't wait for him any longer, either. An invasion was imminent. Even more than Orias could, Hana could sense the chakra amassing at the gates. She left.

Within a few hours time, it had all ended. She came back to the hospital. Orias was still in the basement. She knew this for a fact. Whether or not he still intended to meet her? Hana did not know this. Still, she had business to intend to in the blood bank. Hana had been told to rest. That she did more than enough out in the field and that it would be best if she focused on just recovering her chakra and stamina for now. However, she couldn't just lie down when there were so many people that still needed treatment. Her emotions, which she wore on her sleeves like always, would not let her get a blink of sleep, so instead, she decided to go back down to where she was originally supposed to meet Orias. Even if he didn't come to meet her, she would just reorganize the blood… again. No doubt in the rush of the invasion, the blood that was taken was not accounted for in the records. She could fix that while resting.

Tired and bloody, mostly with the blood of those she had to desperately treat on the battlefield rather than her own, Hana reentered the blood room and turned on the lights. It was empty, just like when she was here before. By now, all the emergency treatments that required blood had either succeeded or failed. The hospital, as a whole, had transitioned over to providing care that focused on recovery as opposed to stabilization of a dangerous situation. However, as expected, the room had notably less blood in it. Hana moved over to peek at the notes regarding the room, to see how much of it she would need to update and then realized that in her exhaustion, she'd forgotten just how dirty she was. She stared at her grime-covered hands, feeling rather defeated and then sighed, she turned to watch the door, .

Orias appeared in the doorway to the room and greeted Hana, verifying that, yes, he still did intend to meet her. Well, the knowledge that the appointment she had made earlier was not forgotten made Hana happy, so yes, she smiled. Although, it had notably less strength than her usual expressions. "Good… whew! It's almost morning already, isn't it? Well, good almost morning to you, Oreos," Hana returned the greeting and then frowned as she remembered the events that had just recently passed, "Yes, there were some problems. A lot of them. I suggest you be careful when you exit the hospital. There's a lot of blood in the entire building now, and I wouldn't want you to lose control and bite into someone living." About when she warned Orias about being careful in the hospital, Hana turned away from him to the blood bags. She shifted through a few while talking, the worried, tired expression still on her face but her mind still actively working to decide the best type of blood to give Orias: something the hospital had plenty of and would miss the least. She selected a bag with those requirements and walked over to Orias with it. Handing it to him with both hands, she smiled once more, "Here, you must be hungry, right? The blood should sustain you, correct? It's a bit of a mess out there, so if this much isn't enough, just tell me. I'll go get some more," and began explaining why she had chosen to bring him over to the hospital specifically, "You're in the hospital records as a Vladian, and we've been told that Vladian's need constant access to blood in order to feed. However, you only scarcely visit. I was worried that maybe you were shy about asking or just didn't know where the blood was stored. Well, now you know where we are, and just so you know, the nurses love you… Well, the female ones at least are always gossiping about you." As much as Hana tried to hide it through enthusiasm and overall cheer, her exhaustion was obvious. She was tired, despite her inability to sleep, and the lack of energy seeped into her tone and facial expressions. It affected how quickly and concisely she could think, leading to the repeated use of the rhetorical affirmative to buy time and the somewhat winding way of speaking because she couldn't think of a better way to phrase her thoughts.

Of course, Hana had noticed that Orias had basically locked himself in a room while the entire village was outside fighting for its collective life. However, it was not her place to ask. At least, she didn't feel like it was her place to pry into Orias's personal difficulties. Maybe he didn't trust himself to fight besides his allies without risking the chance of falling into bloodlust and turning on friends instead of foes (Hana actually didn't know how severe the Vladian bloodlust really was). Maybe he was just a coward. Maybe there was one person in particular that he feared meeting and somehow knew that person was in the group that invaded. Hana didn't know. She didn't need to know.

✝ " I search for salvation

[timeline]

Did he just hear her right? ‘Oreos?’ On a normally situation he would probably behead her. She was small enough her body would be easy to carry and she probably had just enough blood for a solid meal. At the moment he had other problems, primarily resisting the urge to rip everyone limb from limb due to the copious amounts of blood within the room and the hospital. Organized rows of the blood were arranged in both type and age. Glancing around, his eyes landed on what his favorite type. It wasn’t the rarest of all types around, but it was available in plenty of people. It was common for certain Vladians to carry around a person of varying importance that had their favorite type of blood. His uncle was one of these vessels, carrying his aunt’s favorite blood. For him, if he wanted to he could do a very similar thing with his preferred type of blood; thankfully his was so plentiful he didn’t need to carry somebody around. Right now though, he needed to feed. It wasn’t a sensation he had all the time simply due to his overindulgence. Looking back at the past few days, if not weeks, he had consumed less and less than he would have liked and would need to survive. Survivability with his need for blood is what almost pushed him towards killing the civilian yesterday, towards wanting to drain his criminal friends of every drop of blood they contained in their muscled, brainless bodies. Unfortunately for him, he was interrupted by some lesser beings. While Hana was one of them, he didn’t hate her as much as others .

Orias was shocked out of his mental stupor when Hana had offered him a bag of blood to eat from. Staring at the packaged good, Orias had a feeling of disgust rise up within his body as it slowly spread through his face. Compared to the wafting scent of fresh blood and misery that was just a few feet from this door, the contained material in the sealed plastic bag, labeled with its contents, was just like going from eating with a King to a peasant trying to give you their best. Gingerly grasping the bag with his index finger and thumb, his left arm reached behind him grabbing a chalice. Made from silver with an ornate design scrolling along the sides while a small string of rubies wove their way around the handle like a bloody river. His time growing up in the North had almost demanded he carry this cup everywhere. When attending a meeting with another tribe leader, having your own designed chalice was a symbol of wealth and status. Some were simpler, like his, while other leaders had goblets rimmed with gold and overflowing with rubies. Wealthy, yes, heavy, yes, but intelligence and steady status were something that these people didn’t have. While this was the main reason for the cups, it was also because you knew they were safe. Warfare, poisoning, killing, all is fair game for the feud for power. Ridding yourself of a potentially dangerous container was one smart and safe thing everyone could have. With a quick movement, a cut appeared along the bottom of the bag as it’s contents drained into the goblet in his hand. The warmth radiated outward from the liquid, warming the goblet and his hand, yet still it wasn’t genuine, wasn’t fresh. Swirling the liquid around he took a small sip before relaxing back on one of the tables scattered along the walls of the rooms. ”I knew plenty well what the hospital had in storage. Countless bags of blood from the upstanding citizens of the village, all prepared to save those in trouble or be thrown away when useless. Getting food that way though, being fed from a bag in orderly amounts, almost feels…” Orias paused for slightly dramatic effect while locking his eyes with Hana, ”animalistic. While many would claim that my kind is full of animals, I don’t think that, do you?”

It was a simple question, easy enough to answer if needed, but slipups were what he wanted. Throwing somebody off guard, pushing them towards one answer when he wanted another. It was entertaining to toy with these people as if they were nothing more. Taking another sip of the warm crimson liquid, he felt his life almost soar as it rejuvenated his very being. True, it wasn’t fresh, but it was sustenance. ”Please Hana, you look tired and exhausted. It would be so easy for you to rest for a while, throw the responsibility to somebody else. I know it must have been thrilling potentially meeting me, but if you still don’t want to leave you should tell me about yourself. I’d be fascinating hearing about your little life.”

The thought, was clearly written on Hana's face as she watched the disgust spread on Orias's face. It was quickly replaced with obvious relief when he accepted the blood pack, intrigue when he pulled out a cup, and understanding when he filled the cup and drank from it. When he turned to look at her, of course she noticed, and she willingly locked wondering eyes with him. At the mention of exhaustion, Hana yawned, holding up a hand to cover her wide open mouth.

Now that it was her turn to speak, she moved in the reverse order of everything Orias had mentioned. Rubbing her neck, she admitted with a grateful smile, "Easy, yes, and even the right thing to do at this time. The hospital will need as many fully refreshed hands as it can afford in the following few days, but I don't feel up for some shut eye quite yet. Maybe I'll lie down for a little after a finish organizing all this blood." She motioned to the rows of blood bags and then stepped behind the counter to begin her work. Although, that didn't stop her from continuing to talk, her movements muffling her voice every now and then as she stepped or stooped behind some cover or another, "So about my life, huh? Well, my mom is a village doctor? She trained me in the medical practice. I came to this village following a cousin intending to just work in the hospital, but then I ended up being recruited as a part of the combat forces because I knew a bit of ninjutsu. That's it?". There was the sound of a door opening then closing and Hana, who had completely disappeared for a good moment, reappeared with a file and the request, "One moment please." There was a pause as she flipped the file open, referenced a notebook that was already on the table, jotted a few things on the file, and closed it. As she walked back to put it away, she moved to the next topic, "I don't quite understand what you mean by animalistic, though," the sound of the door doing door things, "If anything, wouldn't drinking blood stored in man-made bags be more civilized? It's neater and requires production of some sort. Do you mean domesticated instead? Although, I don't see it that way, either. Drinking blood from a pouch is like buying meat from a butcher, isn't it? It's more convenient and an example of distribution of work in an established community. Of course, that isn't to say drinking blood directly from the source is bad, either. I don't know how you Vladians think about your customs and needs. Although, I firmly believe you should at least refrain from sucking dry unwilling innocents." A very disapproving frown graced Hana's face as she made a point of peeking through the aisles and making sure that Orias saw her expression. Then she dipped back behind the aisles and continued with her work and response, which proceeded in a nagging tone, "Really, Oreos, if you knew about this place, then you should have come here sooner. Then you probably wouldn't have been driven to attack a civilian and cause such a huge fuss. Not to mention, starving yourself of blood can't be good for your body. You really shouldn't be so shy... or whatever it was that kept you away. Sure, I don't know about having countless bags. Our village is only so big, after all, but we certainly have enough to at least keep our sole Vladian from starving so long as a village-wide epidemic that causes anemia or something doesn't occur."

Hana fell silent as she returned to the counter and jotted a few notes into the records, her fingers counting down the figures she had memorized during her walk through the aisles. When she finished writing everything, in pen no less, she capped her writing utensil and stood back straight. "Ah," she suddenly remembered something, "By the way, Oreos, what age are you? Also, is that enough blood for you, or should I get you some more?". Her eyes and body language still signaled that Hana felt tired, but her work had apparently given her energy some amount of momentum as she had yet to keel over just yet.

✝ " I search for salvation

[timeline]

With himself, Orias felt something weird about this girl. It wasn’t an attraction at all, no it was similar to hatred. However, it wasn’t because he didn’t like her quite the contrary. She impressed him she wasn’t scared, wasn’t terrified and her answers were direct. Within every movement there was purpose to what her actions would accomplish, fear or thought of loss didn’t get in her way and he quite enjoyed it. Fear though, was something he loved manifesting within others, and if they didn’t feel it, it meant they could be a potential threat to himself. Of course, a threat could be harmful in different ways, not all of them physical. With her, it would be her steadfastness that brought him trouble or a great boon should he use it correctly.

”Think of it this way Hana. Imagine that a miraculous godlike figure has placed you in an entire different realm that is pure beauty and pure perfection. The catch? Everything is edible. For years you traverse around this paradise, living, thriving, and eating whatever. Others join you, a family, and you make your own civilization. Out of the blue, you become separated and wind up with an entirely different civilization. They have the very substance you need running through their veins and the situation turns into kill or be killed for you, they don’t care however. You are but a nuisance. Instead, they chain you up in the middle of the most delectable morsels with one command ‘watch but don’t eat.’ As payment you are thrown a bag every blue moon, one containing what used to be the substance but its warmth is gone. The flavor has been replaced with an aftertaste ringing of composting materials, but you have no other choice for if you don’t eat it you will die.” Orias hadn’t meant to go on in such a manner, lecturing, preaching. His voice becoming colder and more cutting as each word graced over his tongue, as if he was shooting poison into a dying animal. If words could kill, the entire hospital would be a pile of pulsating mush.

”That, dear Hana, is wh-“ the aftertaste hit him and the full force of everything within the blood. This substance wasn’t natural, not what he was supposed to consume, and his body was rejecting its very essence. Almost as if in panic after learning it had consumed a poison that would kill him if not released that instant. A hand clamped over his mouth as a muffled yell launched the chalice in his hand across the room. Brightly, and piercing, a metallic ‘clang’ resonated through the room as the silver broke in half, the remaining blood splattering across the room. With great effort, the vile liquid was forced down his throat as he looked wildly from side to side, normally he would command one of his servants to clean it up but his servents weren’t here.

Regret filled his mind as the image of him looking like a total maniac filled his mind, he’d have to fix that image. Standing up, Orias paced around the room looking at all of its contents before stopping to look at the blood that now crept slowly down the wall. ”I think, I think I’m 16 years old.” A quick pause followed by some mental math lead to him shaking his head. It was young, a number that didn’t reflect how he looked, how he felt, how many experiences he had gone through. ”While it might sound young here I would like to add that Kya and I both are adults where we originate from so don’t think less of me.” Silence filled the air as seconds crept into a minute, allowing Orias to understand everything Hana had spoken. Her life hadn’t been too out of the ordinary. Stable, secure, predictable were all words he would use to describe the setting she had probable grown up in. A life good to some, bad to others, helping reassure them that there was much more to this world than they initially thought. However brief the thought was, it did cross his mind and he acted on it. ”Rest Hana I will finish the rest of the work.” It wasn’t an action he would normally do, peasant work, work of a slave he shouldn’t have to touch or even be seen with. In all truth, the work she had been doing was simple, just tedious and long drawn out. IT would take hours to complete but she was barely standing on her feet. The last thing he needed was her collapsing on the floor and him being blamed that he attacked her. There was also some personal gain to it. A favorable reputation with the hospital was one. If Hana was correct, then helping with the blood would cause those who saw him to favor him more highly and become more loose-lipped in their attempts to communicate. This might be a hospital, but the dead always had so many secrets to take with them to their graves. Who knew what information might come out in the medically induced haze of reality so many patients were placed under? Secrets were dangerous, that was true but could often make for a very…wealthy…side job.
