THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM
THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

--------------------------------------------

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

  • Cutthroat Kitchen

To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.

Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.

  • Lurking Library

In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:

      - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
      - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
      - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
      - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
      - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)

  • Bloodcurdling Bedroom

The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

Merry very seldom stayed in her own room anymore. Usually only if one of her ghoulfriends was sleeping over, otherwise the ghoul spent the majority of her evenings in the room next to her own.

Tonight was no different. As classes ended, Merry had headed back to the dorms, heading for her own dorm so she could change before bringing her books and homework next door so she could work on it with Ahm and Nahm. It had become routine, something that no longer required any sort of thought. She didn't even notice the notes pinned to both doors until her hand was on the knob to her own. "Oh?"

Removing it, the chimera ghoul gave it a quick scan before letting out a rather loud trill of excitement that rang out down the hall.

She was grabbing the note of the twin's door and letting herself in less than a moment later, and the second note was shoved rather abruptly into the elder grue's hand as she landed with a bounce on the bed beside him. "Guess what!"

Inside his dorm room, Ahm was folded up on his bed playing Spinecraft and griefing the hell out of some poor sap that had wandered into his and Nahm's territory when Merry burst in. The flash of light caused him to turn away and hiss in pain but the visual discomfort was quickly set aside in favor of staring at the piece of paper being shoved into his face my his excited ghoulfriend.

Really though, he'd heard her trill. He should've known she'd be bursting through."What? What've you got there beautiful, hmm? Must be important, you're practically vibrating." His eyes didn't want to focus properly just yet, so he just saw paper and blur.

"Oh its very important." The ghoul forced her way between Ahm and his game, slithering right into the boil's space so she could lay an apologetic kiss on his cheek for having flashed the room with light. It wasn't a mistake she made often, but it was one that always left her feeling quite bad. The very last thing she ever wanted to do was cause her boil's pain.

Turning, she poked a finger at the paper, indicating a particular line. "Look." Her claw tip tapped the page, and she turned again to grin up at him. "We've got our exams." Too excited to wait for an answer, she provided one of her own, wings flaring out as she flopped down against him and let out another delighted chirrup.

Exams meant they were moving onto the second year. It meant they were drawing level with Nahm. It meant they were going to the tunnels very shortly thereafter!.

So much excitement!

With the importance of the notice in her hot little hands, Ahm could forgive her the momentary flash of forgetfulness (he would have anyway but the exam notice made it that much easier) - it wasn't like she did it often. Usually when she had Big News or wasn't as awake as she might otherwise have been (perhaps intoxicated, but shhh...). "In that case..." Ahm reached around the ghoul in his lap to save and exit his game; this required his full attention, now didn't it?

"Oh Jack, we do." He skimmed over the notice and grinned as her wings flared with excitement. They'd been waiting - hoping, really - for this. Nahm was already there, already a knob, but Ahm and Merry...well, they were catching up.

"Come anytime, huh? So beautiful, when do you want to go?" In theory they were good to go right then, if they wanted...right? A frission of excitement crept along his spine like itchy lightning. The first year exams!

The ghoul sank back on her heels, wings folding sleekly along her back again now that she had Ahm's attention. "Now?" they could go now, couldn't they? Go now, and be done with it.

Then all they would have left to worry over is the impending trip to the clan tunnels.

Oh, and prom. Couldn't forget that. One more event Merry was looking forward to.

"Sure, lemme get dressed to go out." He closed his laptop completely and grinned up at her while sliding from the bed; Ahm absolutely didn't mind going as soon as he'd gotten himself wrapped up for a fight. Normally he only wrapped his neck, tail and hands since the rest was covered well by clothing, but this was an exam at Amityville and could mean anything. He absolutely didn't trust the educators not to go so far as to prepare an actual battle as the test.

Which meant he'd be wrapping up all the way: tail, shoulders to fingers, upper torso to throat and from his toes to his knees. Over the soft winding would go skin tight, breathable material from home - an under-suit of sorts - and then actual clothes: jeans, socks and sturdy boots. A long sleeve turtle-neck. A belt (they were handy, never knew what you might be able to accomplish with a good belt at hand. And of course a cowl to help hide his face, after he'd put his hair into a low ponytail. Merry could help, of course, but really...Ahm was so accustomed to wrapping himself or his twin up that it would probably be faster if she just watched.

Oh Prom...oh trip home that he was actually looking forward to (okay so he always liked being home he just didn't always like being made to go).

Tucking a few small items into various folds and compartments, Ahm turned to the chimera, eyes glowing in his hood. "Well, let's get this over with."

A little reluctantly Merry withdrew from her boilfriend's lap to sit cross-legged on the bed, hands in her lap, to watch the grue. Dressing or undressing, it was always worth watching. The boil's wore so many layers, had so many steps they needed to see to before they could leave their room in safety. It fascinated the ghoul, but more than that, she wanted to learn. Wanted to be able to help them dress for the day, and not just strip down.

When he had finished, turning to her again, she slipped off the bed and into his arms. Ever the affectionate ghoul, she had to steal a kiss, the taste from his lips, before they set out. But once she had, sinking back off the tips of her hooves, she'd take his hand. "Ready when you are, handsome."

Out the door and down the hall, she smoothed her fingers over the boil's knuckles as she hummed. A soft, jaunty little tune that sounded perhaps a little tribal.

The House of Horrors was exactly where the notes had said it would be, and as they approached it Merry gave a low whistle, eyes widening slighting as she looked up at the spooky building.

Ahm relished the stolen kiss, but kept himself task-focused - if he didn't, they'd never make it out of the room. But with both monsters staying to task, they linked hands and headed out; Ahm's tail twitching against his leg in time to the tune Merry hummed.

"Huh...doesn't this look inviting?" It was quite the opposite, being imposing and spooky in ways that would have set his ruff to rising had he been furred. As things stood, the fine hairs at his nape prickled. The smell was actually the worst - like a siren call - smokey and delicious.

The Grue couldn't quite resist, not with a welcome from a sign, the scent, and that half-broken door just begging them to step inside. "Best to just go in." He tugged Merry after him, not relinquishing her hand for a moment, and was dismayed - but not really surprised - when the deserted space locked them in.

"I..should've seen that coming." His free hand was at his forehead, long fingers pressed against his temples as Ahm mentally berated himself for being stupid. Though really...this was something they were supposed to be doing, right? Well..then it would have happened either way and he'd just sped it up a few minutes. He could live with that. Glancing around, their purpose there built in his mind, "I suppose we're supposed to make it through this place..."

The closest room that wasn't an occupied-only-by-spiders coat closet was a kitchen. Ahm stood with Merry at the door jamb, looking in curiously. "I'll go first, give you chance to see what might be waiting for us." Ahm kissed her lightly and then entered the kitchen fully, moving confidently towards a door near the 'entrance'. This proved to be a bad idea, as once he opened the door he found himself soaked by a rather large bucket of iced water that had him swearing not only in the Common tongues, but several others, including his native one. The door was slammed with as much force as he could muster, paired with a "Who the JACKING ********> left a bucket ******** cold-a** water...." Well, they knew at least one thing to be wary of now!

"Very inviting," she agreed, voice soft and doubtful as she looked up at the house with lips pursed and tail flicking nervously about her ankles. Not that she knew what she was nervous about. As a school run test, the House wasn't going to hold anything dangerous, right?

She gave a nod to his suggestion that she might as well just head inside, following along with him, fingers still laced with his. Although, where as the grue was expecting the door to close behind him, Merry was not. The sound made her jump, and she whirled, hand tightening on his before she stepped in against his side. With a frown she gave the room at large a look, shoulders rising in a small shrug at Ahm's question. "I suppose so." It made sense, since they couldn't go back the way they came.

They made their way to a kitchen with it's layer of dust covering every surface. A soft hum followed Ahm's offer to go first, a smile touching her lips as she returned the kiss. "Be careful." Exam or not, school run or not, she didn't want the boil getting hurt.

But she lingered in the doorway as they had planned, watching closely as he made his way along the floor and headed for one of the doors. It opened, and whether or not there was anything through it, she didn't see right away. Instead she let out a little yip as the water cascaded all over the grue, bringing a curse to his lips loud enough to echo through the open room. "Ahm, darlin'. You alright?" It was just water, she hoped.

Braving the kitchen herself, she headed towards him. A little carelessly, as her hip bumped against a bin of what would later appear to be small bones. Sending it crashing tot he floor with volume enough to make send the ghoul airborne, startled scream considerably louder than Ahm's previous exclamation.

Ahm was not amused, okay. He was wet, which wasn't horrible, but it was cold and it would take forever to dry - if it did, without him stripping down, which he would not do - so he'd be Jacking cold the whole exam. "It's just water, but it's Jacking cold." He wiped water from his face and peered into the darkness beyond the first door. It was a small enclosed room full of...giant peppers and exaggeratedly small forks. "Nothing useful in here."

Ahm grabbed one of the peppers and ate it, missing Merry's bump into the bin of bones though the sound did make him turn quickly, boots slipping on the damp floor slightly and putting him into a deeper crouch than he'd wanted. "Merry!" He went to her side to help pick her up off the floor. "Are you alright, love?" He waited to make sure the chimera wasn't hurt before warily going for another door.

Surely it woudn't be booby-trapp-- It was. Another bucket of icy slush-water fell onto Ahm's head and he just stood there with the most disgruntled expression on his face. "Merry. I hate this house. I'm going to burn it down when we're done."

Ahm was cold. A chill ran up the chimera's spine as Ahm hurried over to help her up. "Oh Jack, that's frigid!" Of course she didn't jerk away from him, it wasn't his fault, but his gloved hands were currently very icy against her thin fur and warm skin. She tried to help, squeezing water from looser bits of his clothing, but there was just so much... "I'm alright, just startled." Part bird, part cat, she tended to startle easily.

She worked to smooth down ruffled fur as Ahm moved off to continue their exploration.

Then she heard it, the tell-tale splash of water, and she knew he'd just found another booby-trapped door. There wasn't even a curse this time, just a resigned, unhappy expression on handsome features as he turned, shoulders hunched, to face her.

She tried not to laugh, really she did, but a few uncontrollable giggled leaked out against her will as she watched him drip. "The school might not look kindly on that. Maybe wait for it until the morning we leave for the tunnels."

Karma would see that she didn't escape scoot free with her giggles. The next step she took, her hoof landed in something unidentifiable and sticky. "What the Jaaaaack!" Gross!

Ahm's tail lashed, flicking chilly water around the kitchen as he wiped further water from his eyes. "You know, that's a good idea. Fine. The morning we leave for home, we're taking a match to this heap." Merry's laughter cut through the growing tension and soon enough Ahm joined her, eyes half-shut into crescents as he laughed over the ridiculousness of his situation. "I think the buckets have a thing for me."

He picked up the bucket and ate it too. Then he started off again, coming after Merry. He was about to say something when she stepped in something gross. "Ugh, That's--" Ahm not paying attention meant he knocked into another of those stupid bone-bins, causing him to stumble but not fall - and he eyed the bones thoughtfully before tossing what looked like a finger bone into his mouth. "Tastes like...canid."

"Here, wipe your hoof." The Grue held out a handkerchief from deep in his robes, maybe it would help, maybe it wouldn't.

She had a hand pressed over her mouth when Ahm's eyes found her again, barely contained mirth making red eyes shiny. "I think you might be right." Pressing her lips together, she lifted her hands to run thumbs over his cheeks, rubbing away the water droplets that clung there. He was soaked to the bone, the poor thing, and there wasn't a thing they could do about it until they were finished.

There were more bones, the sound send pale fur on end, but not nearly as bad the second time around. She had to flare her wings to smooth the feathers, but they were neat again as they folded down along her back.

She made a slight face as he ate one of the bones, but took the handkerchief as he handed it to her, resting a hand on his arm for balance so she could wipe at the stickiness on the bottom of her hoof. It didn't seem to want to come off, at least not easily. She scrubbed at it for a moment before giving up with a sigh, offering the hanky back. "No luck." Ah well, it had been worth a try.

A peck on the cheek, then she was off exploring again. There were a lot of doors, one of them probably lead out of there, so she headed to one of the ones Ahm hadn't tried yet-

And gave a loud, shrill screech as icey water came down on top of her.

If the buckets had a thing for the Grue, they could Jack right on off. He wasn't interested, though they did absolutely have an interesting flavor to them. Merry smoothed water from his cheeks and he smiled, bedraggled but still full of self-assured confidence. This was a temporary thing...and certainly all exams were made to be annoying and horrible, right? So it wasn't either of their faults that he was soaked and she'd gotten her fur - and feathers - ruffled.

"Ugh, whatever that is, it's like skitter glue." Ahm folded the cloth up and tucked it back into his robes. He watched her momentarily before wandering off towards another door, this one looked sort of likely. Before he could open it, he heard a great crash and woosh and then Merry's screech as yet another bucket came down. On her. Ahm watched the bucket rolling across the black and white floor and glowered at it, "Cheater," he hissed.

"I'd give you a layer, but it wouldn't help." Damn. It was one thing for him to be soaked, but poor Merry? Still...maybe the Buckets really were on his side, 'cause she looked good wet. Or they hated him 'cause he was doing an exam and couldn't take advantage. With a bit of a grump, Ahm opened his door...and promptly got doused again.

By this point, he didn't bother doing more than making a sharp intake of breath. "Jacking buckets, I swear..."
