Chane Kirwin

The foyer of Kirwin Castle had become packed with various nobles, princes, queens, and kings from all over the land to attend the ball the king had set up for his daughter. It was Chane's eighteenth birthday, and he wanted the entire land to come and celebrate this momentous occasion with her. Now that she was eighteen, Chane was meant to choose a prince or a noble of her choosing, and marry him. Though, upon hearing such news from her father that she was was meant to be betrothed at her own birthday ball, Chane refused to choose any prince or noble that she would just meet.

Pushing back a stray lock of a violet color, Chane descended down the large staircase towards the party. She took a deep breath, trying to keep up her composure as she folded her hands over the black cloth that covered her slender belly. A few smiles, and a few conversations around the room before she could disappear into the courtyard, away from the crowd that had gathered to see her.

Chane approached the first man that she saw, forcing out a smile at him. This ball certainly wasn't what she had in mind. She could only wonder if her father had spread the word that Chane had been 'in search' of a man suitable to marry her. Grabbing the ends of her dress, she curtsied the man in front of her, "Good evening, Sir. I'm happy you came all the way to Gardenia just to attend a ball," she greeted in the lightest tone that she could muster up.

❝ Don't give up, the beginning is always the hardest...

                            The Dragon

Reaching up to adjust the collar around his throat, Nathanial winced at its tightness. He was tempted to remove the thing completely, but after a cough from the man at his side, his hand dropped. Dark eyes fluttered to his right, and Nathanial eyed his master. The man was only slightly shorter than him, but his stature made up for his height. The man was pampered to near perfection, his dark hair smoothed back, suit steamed and posture almost impeccable. Nathanial, on the other hand, had trouble keeping his hair in place, and he had a slight slouch.

He had accompanied his master to the ball at his master's request, and he was trying his best to act professional. As the ball had begun, he had thought more and more about how he didn't seem to fit in with the multiple suitors and fellows who had come. Then again, he wasn't exactly a "suitor." He wasn't looking for the princess's hand in marriage, his master was. So, he shuffled here and there, looking for something to do, and keeping an eye on his master in case he needed him. The night started off normally, and he enjoyed his job as the wallflower.

Running a hand through his dark auburn hair, Nathanial decided it best to at least enjoy himself while he was here. Heck, as long as he stayed away from the princess, he was safe with his master. Now that he thought about it, he hadn't been paying much attention the entire evening, and wasn't even sure what the princess looked like. She might look the fanciest, but hell, all the ladies looked the same with their dresses and hair. He shrugged off the idea, and stepped towards the dance floor, where multiple couples were waltzing to the music. He stepped up to a young lady who seemed to be chatting with another, gave her a gentle tap on the shoulder, and when she turned, he bowed deeply and held his hand out to her. At his invitation, the young lady giggled quietly before bowing back and letting him escort her onto the floor.

Chane Kirwin

Chane giggled and chatted with the man before excusing herself to go speak with a few other people who were attending her ball. She didn't know how much longer she could keep up the facade. Glazing over the ballroom with her hazel eyes, she tried her best to pick out someone who seemed to be alone. Her eyes first fell on a man with messy auburn hair, waltzing with a young woman on the dance floor. He certainly looked out of place for a ball, but she wasn't one to judge based on looks. Chane wasn't going to interrupt his wonderful evening with his dance partner in order to hold a conversation with the messy-looking man.

Her eyes soon fell on a man with dark hair, and a near perfect posture near the opened doors that led out to the courtyard. Perfect. Someone she could talk to before escaping to her sanctuary. Chane made her way through the crowd, folding the ends of her skirt in hands as she approached the stout man. She forced out a bright smile at him, curtsying as soon as she stopped in front of him.

"Good evening, Sir. I don't believe we've met before. My name is Chane Kirwin, and I would like to formally welcome you to my ball," she introduced herself before standing up straight, releasing the dress before folding her hands over her stomach, "I do hope you're enjoying your evening so far. It's not often my father will hold events at the castle."

After a few minutes of dancing with his new friend, Nathanial's gaze scattered throughout the crowd, trying to find his master. When he did spot him, he saw him chatting with a rather small young lady, purple hair and matching dark purple dress. Assuming he was fine, Nathanial returned to his partner.

"Good evening m'lady," his master said, bowing deeply, his voice smooth. "Such a pleasure to finally meet you formally." After introductions and a few different topics of conversation, his master scanned the crowd as well, spotting Nathanial finishing a dance with someone. He caught his eye, and nodded before offering his hand to the princess. "If you'd like m'lady," he started, "We can continue this tempting conversation outside?"

Nathanial took his partner's hand, kissing it gently before he made his way off the dance floor. His master caught his eye, and after seeing him nod, he assumed he had finally met the princess. His eyes jumped to the young lady he was still conversing with, and a brow raised at the sight. He had only looked over her before, but the more he gazed at her, the more detail he took in. His senses were more... let's say "heightened" than most people because of... "talents" he possessed. So after a few seconds, he shook himself from his stare to look away, looking around for something to do while his master did his business.

Chane Kirwin

Chane managed to let out a chuckle before accepting the man's hand, "Of course we can continue this conversation out in the courtyard. This ballroom has become much too stuffy for my tastes, if you ask me," she answered him, "Though, I think some of the other guests, here, might become jealous of you. They've been waiting all night to have their own private conversation with me."

Chane wasn't afraid to stir up any sort of inner drama between the men. What could these men possibly do at her ball anyways that they would forget later on? She walked alongside of the man out into the courtyard, leading him through the path that was surrounded by rose bushes. Chane released the man's hand as the two approached one of a few stone benches in the courtyard, taking a seat down on the cool rock.

"You must have something intriguing to talk about if you're too embarrassed to talk inside around others," Chane teased, smirking at the man beside her, "I'm curious to know what it might be. And you needn't worry, I'm good at keeping secrets."

Eyes following his master as he escorted the princess outside, Nathanial returned to his wallflower position. Crossings his arms, he silently hoped they could leave soon, that is, if his master sealed the deal. The plan was for his master to win the princess's hand in marriage, so they would become more rich and powerful, blah blah blah. That was the gist of it. His master usually kept him in the dark about most of their plans, but it never ended too badly, so Nathanial mostly followed along.

"I'm sure you understand why most young men have made their way here this evening," his master said, sitting down with the young lady. "I'm curious as to when you might be comfortable making a decision regarding your engagement. I would never hope to rush you, but do you have to make a decision tonight?" The man lifted an eyebrow in curiosity, his smile gentle and inviting. "It would seem unfair for you to make such a big decision in such little time."

Chane Kirwin

OOC: Yeah, I was going to have her refuse him anyways. She's not one to exactly make such big decisions on the spot just to make her father happy.

Chane frowned as the man beside her began to talk, "You must have talked with my father if you know what this evening is all about, then," she sighed. She turned her head away from him, resting her hands in her lap as she looked up towards the dark sky, the stars twinkling above them, "You're correct, it is unfair for me to make a decision so soon. As it is, I hardly know most of the guests here. My father's the one that invited everyone, and as it was, I never asked for this ball at all. Since I'm now at an age to marry a man from another kingdom, my father hopes I could become betrothed right on my birthday. How selfish of him."

Chane let out a small smirk before she looked up towards the man that sat beside her, "You shouldn't worry, though. You should enjoy your evening here. Just because I wish not to find a man tonight, doesn't mean you shouldn't have a gander at the other ladies at the party," she encouraged him. Chane felt a bit bad for bursting out that she would refuse any man because of how selfish her father was in her fit of a rant, "So why don't you go ahead and return to the party? I saw one lady who was dancing with an odd gentleman earlier. He had such unkempt dark hair."

At the princess's words, the man sighed and nodded, though his initial surprise and slight annoyance was hidden inside him. "I truly understand m'lady," he told her, and he stood slowly, seeing that his plan would have to be edited in due time. Knowing this was probably his best time to exit, he said, "I hope you enjoy your evening then. We'll meet again, I'm sure of it." And with that, he bowed again with a warm grin, eyeing the princess one last time before making his way back into the ballroom. Once out of sight, his brows furrowed in anger, and he began making his way around various people, his hand slicking his black hair back.

After so much time passed, Nathanial squinted around the room. He had been shuffling here and there for a bit, eventually deciding for himself to loosen his tie and collar, leaving him looking only a little more disheveled. He definitely didn't fit in. With his dark maroon vest and light gray dress shirt, sleeves already rolled a little, black tie and matching black pants and shoes, he was already slightly dressed down for the occasion. Take that with his somewhat dark pink, rosy hair, and he was quite the sight. It added to his uneasiness, and he began searching for his master without knowing he was already looking for him. He's gotta be outside, he was with the princess, he thought to himself, and made his way to the doors leading to the courtyard.

Chane Kirwin

Chane watched the man leave before she let out a sigh of relief. She felt a relief for not having to entertain him much longer. She stood up from the bench, stretching her arms up above her head before she walked further out into the courtyard. The cool night air was soothing, and Chane felt she wanted to sneak up to her room and retire for the evening. She stood near the back wall of the courtyard, gazing up at the stars once more with bright hazel eyes. If my father wasn't so insistent on having this ball, I'd probably just happily spend my birthday alone in the castle, she thought.

Chane sighed as she turned towards the castle, gazing over to see the unkempt man from earlier walking out into the courtyard. He seemed to be in search of someone important. A small smile played on Chane's lips. He certainly looked worse than earlier, but that didn't mean the man wouldn't have good character. She made her way through the courtyard towards the pink-haired man, a smile plastered on her lips, "Good evening," Chane greeted politely as she approached him, "I don't believe I've met you before. You certainly stand out."

It wasn't his master's voice, but a small and gentle one, and his head snapped in the direction instinctively. His eyes landed on the princess, and he twitched in response. After a second of realizing she was speaking to him, he coughed and stood up straighter, not sure what to say. This was never part of the plan. He was supposed to wait for his master's command to leave, but it had never come, hence why he had been searching for him, but for him to run into the princess personally, well, his master might not like it.

"Uhhh," he started, one hand in his pocket. He then bowed, composing himself before running his free hand through his hair. He eyed the young lady, spying her almost forced smile. He smirked then, a brow creased, and his shoulders relaxed a little. "On edge?" he asked out of curiosity, though that certainly wasn't what one would out front ask a princess. Then again, she seemed a little off, and Nathanial wasn't one to brush past that. "You can drop the act, I'm not here to socialize." He was a little brash with his chit chat, but his face was soft and friendly.

Chane Kirwin

Chane raised an eyebrow at the man, almost a bit surprised he could see past her facade that she displayed for him. He was the first one to see right through her forced smile, and see how tense she was. Letting out a sigh of relief, the young brunette relaxed a little, folding her arms over her chest, "To tell the truth, I am. I was inquired twice this evening about choosing a suitor to my liking, but none of these men here have caught my eye at all. In fact, I think it's a bit brash to have me choose a suitor right on my birthday."

Chane couldn't figure out why, but she seemed a little relaxed around this man. Maybe it was the fact that he had was dressed so casually to the ball that made her feel at ease. As though he weren't even interested in her. Chane let out a softer smile at him, "I'm Chane Kirwin. It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir. I honestly do hope you're enjoying your evening here. Please, forgive my rudeness earlier. I'm just upset with my father."

As she sighed and crossed her arms, Nathanial grinned at his success in opening her up a little. Being all pinned up and proper like that didn't seem at all comfortable. He listened to her small rant before hearing her introduction. "Nathanial," he put simply, introducing himself. She shifted his weight to his other foot before blurting out, "If you're allowed to choose your suitor, but don't want one, then don't pick one." He shrugged, eyeing the princess with questioning eyes. It seemed plain enough to him. If she didn't like anyone, she shouldn't have to pick.

Choosing a husband at 18 seemed a little unnerving, so Nathanial could understand why she was on edge. "As for me," he spoke again, his mouth a flat line, "I've only come as company for a... friend. Nothing more. It is a nice party though." At the thought, his eyes darted around once more to see if he missed his master, but again he saw no one, so he inwardly told himself that he'd have to check back inside when he was done.

Chane Kirwin

Chane smirked a bit at Nathanial, "That's an interesting name. Well, as much as I appreciate your advice, I already wasn't going to choose anyone from this ball anyways," she told him, taking a step away from him, "I hate to break it to you, but it seems you're the only interesting one here, and you're not even a suitor. You're here with someone else. It's a shame, though. If you were, we would've had a lovely conversation. Perhaps we'll meet sometime again, Nathanial. Until then, have a wonderful evening."

After curtsying to the seemingly distracted pink-haired man, Chane led herself towards another set of doors that were away from the party. She had grown tired of her own ball, and she simply wished everyone would leave so she could have a talk with her father. Letting out a sigh as she entered the castle, Chane began her ascent up the stairs towards her room. Some peace and quiet would do her some justice on her birthday. She'd be able to think clearly about what she would exactly want to say to her father.

Bowing, he watched her retreating figure, and his face fell a little. She really was quite pretty. It was too bad she was in her current situation. A face like that should never have to frown, he thought. When she finally disappeared, he turned back to the ballroom doors and reentered.

It only took him a few seconds to find his master. He could literally smell his anger. He figured that after he found the princess alone, and after she said she wasn't choosing a suitor tonight, he put two and two together. His master had been shot down, and Nathanial knew that was a bad sign. He could expect a ranting session tonight, maybe some plotting, but he was prepared. As he slithered up towards his master, the man's eyes fell on him, and he automatically turned to leave, knowning Nathanial would follow.

Making their way out into the night, there was silence between the two as they walked throughout the town. Nathanial followed behind his master a few steps, letting him walk on his own. After a minute, he turned back to the castle, its lights still shining brightly as the party continued. They had only spoken a minute, but Nathanial never forgot a face. She had been so distressed, but so resolved at the same time. And of course, that hair. Purple curls running over a coat of brunette. Being one with hair already seen as oddly colored, Nathanial smirked at the thought of finding someone slightly similar. Turning back, he continued walking with his master out of town.
