In 2113 the elite few rule over the masses. Computers, known as the Sybli system, make almost every choice for individuals from what career they can have based on high school test results and a comprehensive physiological evaluation to what you should eat that day based on the activities you have in your calendar. Most are happy to have all their choice made for them blindly following Sybli's recommendations, but a few wish to have more freedom. With the use of cyborgs and paroling robots crime is at an all time low, yet missing persons reports continue to stack up. Police forces and the government claim they are doing all they can to find these missing people yet none are ever heard from again. The few who choose to think for themselves believe that just maybe the government is involved with these missing people.

Amelia laid on her back in the small prison cell that had been her new home for the last week. Each breath brought a sharp pain on her left side, she suspected at least one broken rib, and her face still stung where her questions had slapped her but a small smile still curved her lips. Frustrated that after a week of being tortured by their simulation machine she still hadn't given up who she had been passing the information to he had resorted to physically beating her. She had made him lose control, a small victory where few were to be had. Amelia would enjoy tonight for tomorrow would likely be worse than anything she had experienced so far. The fear, the pain, everything in the simulation felt so real despite her best efforts to tell herself it wasn't. She wasn't sure how much longer she would endure.

The alarms in the building started blaring, the pitch black of her cell replaced with red glowing lights. Maybe she wouldn't have to endure any longer after all. She had managed to send a last ditch message that she had been compromised, but she had never allowed herself the hope of being rescued. At least until now she hasn't.

Adrian was currently walking through the sewers wearing almost all black and a Guy Fawkes mask. He had a belt with various gadgets on it and an extendable baton strapped to his thy. He preferred not to use guns. He also wore a wrist mounted computer which he used to run any of the gadgets he deployed and hack into things on the fly. The plan had been simple, the ground team would breach the building from the eastern side and create a distraction. He would enter the holding through the sewer system and free Amelia. It may have seemed like a design flaw but given that her prison was located under the man building, it had to have a sewer entrance to avoid blocking the path and causing people to ask questions. Not like many people walked around the sewers anyways though so they were really just fortunate for poor planning.

Adrian had reached the doorway to the holding cell and stood quietly waiting for the signal. He was surprised by the lack of security in the sewer do to the obvious design flaws. When the explosion went off overhead Adrian kicked in the door. It was dark in the room aside from a few emergency lights filling the room with a little red light. "Amelia?"

"Yes!" She called out at the sound of her name, sitting up. A sharp cry of pain followed as she clutched a hand to her left side. In her excitement she had forgotten about the injury. After all one of her captors wouldn't be questioning if she was inside. Unless it was another simulation. She remembered being pulled out, waking up in the chair she had come to hate sweating and shaking. She remembered spitting in the man's face as he offered her freedom in exchange for information. They both knew that was a lie. The only thing left for after she gave them what they wanted was death. She remembered him slapping her across the face and punching her until one of the others in the room pulled him away. She remembered being dragged back to her cell and left to lay in the dark once more. It all seemed so real. So normal compared to what they had been showing her in the simulations, but maybe they had decided to go with a different tactic this time. Try to trick her into revealing her contacts instead of torturing it out of her. Or maybe some monster would be waiting on the other side of the door. "Are you real? What's your name?"

"Nope, I'm a figment of your imagination. Now lets go." Adrian said as he stepped into the little light that the red lights gave off and looked down at his wrist mounted computer. He tapped it and the screen lit up. On the screen there appeared to be a blueprint of the floor they were on. "Just a few button presses and a slide then..." As he spoke Adrian began hacking into the building's security. It took a couple seconds but when he was done the red lights and alarms shut off. With the security shutdown Amelia's door unlocked itself. "Seriously let's go we don't have a lot of time." Adrian made a point of avoiding the name question.

Oddly she found his sarcastic comment comforting. Surely if this was not real they would be trying to convince her it was. Even if it was another simulation what choice did she have but to go along with it? Amelia had noted that he hadn't given her a name and she would be sure not to give up any information until she was sure of his identity. Gritting her teeth she made the painful effort to stand, her right hand pressed against her side. Sliding the door open she got her first look at her savoir. The eerie red light did nothing to help with her contemplation of reality, but she had already committed to the idea of escaping. “Lead the way, though if you expect me to run you will have to help me. I am fairly certain some of my ribs are broken.”

"Run? In the sewers? No, that's not happening. One slip and you smell for a month. As for you ribs, if the medic makes it out of the building by the time we reach the van we can have him check." Adrian explained quickly as he walked back over to the sewer entrance. He looked out as far into the darkness as he could and then looked back over at Amelia. "The next 500 yards should be clear. Let's move before they realize we aren't stealing anything or shooting anyone." He knew Amelia was hurt but his assignment didn't cover medical help. His job was to get her from the holding cell to the van. If the ground team did there job they would all be back in the van just as quickly as him. Five minutes, that was the blackout window they had. The people who had captured Amelia would not be able to send in or receive any messages from the building until the five minutes had passed. When the window broke, the rebels knew reinforcements would arrive. Adrian took point and began walking down the sewer way. "Did you tell them anything?"

She couldn't help but snort at his comment about falling into the sewer, something that earned her another jab of pain. Obediently she followed him down the walkway beside the river of sludge becoming more and more convinced this was really happening. Still the combination of darkness and the openness of the sewer made her nervous. A dread in the pit of her stomach she tried her best to ignore, though she found herself sticking as close as possible to her rescuer. This is reality, she tried to tell herself, and there were no monsters in reality. His question didn't surprise her, not was she offended by it. If she had, they would need to know. “Nothing, they don't break your ribs for co-operating.” She would be lying if she didn't admit it had been getting tempting though. "I hadn't expected a rescue."

"You don't that for sure. Maybe they break your ribs no matter what you do." Adrian naturally made jokes, it was his way of coping with stress or tension. The more serious things became, the less serious he became. He paused when he reached the end of the 500 yards he had claimed would be clear. This was where he had entered but he someone much have shut the sewer grate. It was darker than he had been expecting. Adrian shrugged and looked over at the ladder leading up to the surface. "You sent a message, your handler received it. He managed to shoot off a message to the headquarters before he was taken. " Adrian paused and turned to face Amelia, not that he could really see her in the dark. "I probably should have told you that earlier. Your contact is gone."

“Perhaps.” She answered absentmindedly. If you co-operated you turned up dead as soon as you gave them everything they wanted. Amelia looked up at the ladder he had stopped in front of. Climbing it would be a difficult prospect at best. Instead of climbing though he turned to her revealing her contact was gone. She couldn't help but feel a stab of guilt. Had it been her last desperate message that had compromised him or had they already been after him? Maybe he had been the one to compromise her? “Gone? They weren't kept alive and questioned like myself?” She avoided the use of the pronoun on purpose. Maybe he was here with the rebels to rescue her or maybe he was fishing for information.

"We don't know, you got a message off to him which he forwarded to us. He didn't send his own message with his whereabouts before he was taken. If he is alive they are torturing him for information and we can not help him. Then again he always had an iron will so maybe he'll find his own way out." Adrian shrugged slightly and turned to climb the ladder. "I know climbing this may be hard for you but the only other alternative is a pulley system and that would be worse for your ribs." When he reached the top of the ladder he pushed off the manhole cover and climbed out of the wretched sewers. Once he was outside he looked across the street to see the van waiting for them. He looked just beyond the van at the building that the ground team went into only to find them now coming out of the building. they were taking too long. All of them.

Why hadn't he sent his own message? It clearly wasn't the time to discuss it further, but something seemed wrong about the whole situation. “I'll manage.” After all what choice did she have, other than to wait in the sewer for the guards to come collect her again. As he left her side to climb the ladder she felt the anxiety claw it's way deeper. Where there just his footsteps or was something else coming down the sewer? They way the sound echoed it was impossible to tell. A ring of light fell around her as the manhole cover was pushed away, but that only made things worse. A shining beacon broadcasting her location for whatever was coming from the darkness. She placed her right hand on the ladder to begin her own climb to the surface. If she hurried then it wouldn't catch her. Amelia took one last glance over her shoulder before letting out a scream. It was too late, the creature was already right beside her. Twisted and bloody with barbed wire wrapped around it's grotesque form, it raised a large meat cleaver at her. Back peddling as quickly as she could, she tripped over her own feet and fell to the ground sending blinding pain through her side. Still the creature persisted and she issued another scream as she tried to crawl backwards away from it.

Adrian hadn't heard the creature until it was attacking Ameila. Above ground he was a little preoccupied ushering the others into the van and when they had all made it back in he did a head count. Everyone he had come with was here, but the girl was not. Then he heard her scream. Adrian turned and looked around for Amelia but saw nothing. She must not have come up from the sewers. With that in mind and an ever growing sense of urgency Adrian ran back over to the manhole and jumped down, completely bypassing the ladder. He expected a hard landing but what he got was a little worse. There was the initial thud and that hurt but right after hitting the sewer floor he found himself tangled in something that was cutting into his arms and legs. Adrian began jerking rapidly in various directions until he had freed himself from the barbed wire he had landed on. When he was free he looked over at Amelia. There was nothing here, nothing in her way or attacking her other than a little barbed wire that must have been here earlier. "Alright quit screwing around and climb the damn ladder."

“Where did it go? It was right there.” She insisted looking frantically around the sewer clearly terrified. It had collapsed as her rescuer had jumped back down leaving only the barbed wire behind. Even that seemed different, relatively clean compared to the rusted blood stained wire that had wrapped around the creature. Amelia scrambled back up to her feet ignoring the burning down her side as the creature would be back any second. She quickly ran the few steps to his side before turning her back to him peering into the darkness. “Didn't you see it?”

"There is nothing down here. But if you're so afraid that there is something here maybe it would be in your best interests to climb the damn ladder!" Adrian was getting angry. Amelia's hallucinations were seriously screwing up their time table. The five minute window had passed and government reinforcements were on their way. They needed to move out now or they would be left behind. An unspoken reality that all of the rebels agreed to. If you fell behind, you were left behind and expected to bite a bullet before being caught. The van would abandon them if it had to.
