Can anyone make some suggestions on what to do with this picture? It's not looking right to me...

I think the planet ring isn't promenent enough, you should work on the ring wink . Also, the planet horizon looks way too bright. Other then that I think its looks good.

It looks pretty good. Ya, make the ring more noticable and maybe lighten the planet a bit... so it stands out more.

Not too shabby... I used to be a Terragen fan. biggrin

Lots of stars... Ring needs to have some OOMPH!

Kinda alot of planets/moons close together... Great pic though.

The ring... Ach, I probably should have left it out. I just kinda threw it in there. *grins* I have no idea how to properly make rings on there, that will take some experimentation. Let's see... The brightness issues are also kinda troublesome. I did actually tone down the horizon glare, but that was just part of an effort to make the quick fade to black look more natural. The planet lightness really was more of a texture issue than anything, the texture looked bad if it was too bright, and I'm too lazy to redo all that. Thanks for your comments so far. One more specific question... Was adding in the nebulae a bit much? Was that a good touch? What about the positioning?

The nebula isn't bad, hardly noticable. As for rings, ther're not hard, just do a cloud filter, twirl it until it looks like rings, then you can cut and distort it the way you want. I've done it a couple of times and it looks like this: http://www.pix8.net/pro/pic/11074LE0g/207560.jpg so it gives a good effect too.

Oh, very nice! I suppose that's obvious in retrospect. Thank you very much for that. I'd never really tried to create rings before... I tend to enjoy making he nebulae and stars more than the planets. I'll certainly try that effect with the next piece I do involving a planet.

Thank you all very much, your suggestions and tips have been very helpful. I'll link the next one I do in that style over to here.

Looking forward to seeing your next image. And, if you'd like a tutorial for the rings theres one here.

Well, I wasn't able to slot the rings in without making it look kinda odd, but here's my latest... I like it better, although it's FAR from what I'd like it to be. http://www.sheezyart.com/view/323905/

That does look much nicer. How do you do your nebulae by the way?

The things I notice are that the tiny planet seems flat, like it isn't really there in the scene but rather sitting on top of it like a sticker or something. (does that make any sense...?) And I'm not sure if this is something or not but there seems to be a massive amount of stars the higher you go in the pic.

And I really like that 2nd one you've done. 3nodding

Thats one thing I like, kinda like there's light polution from the planet razz .

The star numbers increasing was actually done on purpose in the first one. *grins*

The nebulae I make through a variety of ways. Normally I just use several different cloud-textured brushes over a base texture. The nebula in the picture I just posted was based on a straight Difference Clouds texture, nothing fancy. It's actually the same texture I used for the planet, because I'm lazy.

The one I'm most proud of, nebula-wise, is this one.
That was a straight smudged texture, using a dry brush with the smudge tool. MANY layers on that one.

Hmm, seems that the nebula thing you do is simple enough, I can give that a try. Seems you only do blue ones though, you should experiment with different colours, some can look quite nice.
