Professor Thorsten Eckstein/// Former Keltainen at Durmstrang///
About the Professor:
Thorsten Eckstein was born in Germany and has recently come to live in Scotland with his daughter Cornelia. Attending Durmstrang Institute the once timid boy landed himself in Team Keltainen. After witnessing the murder of his mother and incarcerating his own father, Thorsten began to toughen up. As such students my find him to be intimidating if not a tad creepy. Although secretly quite nice outside of the classroom and professional setting, this German wizard has a deep interest in the afterlife and has since before his mother died. If you happen to have an interest in the dead then you might fight Thorsten to be right up your ally.
About the Class:
The class is taught in a classroom on the third floor that is decked out with preserved animals, you name it it's probably in the classroom. The subject itself teaches students about life after death. Everything from how to tell a ghost from a Poltergeist, to dealing with Ghouls and Inferi this class covers it. If you have an interest in ghosts and ghouls this is the class for you.
* Class will be held on Friday during Block 3 from 11:00am to 11:45am * Class is updated in real time each week on Sunday

* Any detention resulting from rules broken shall be done in my office.
Please Note: Each student must attend a minimum of two lessons or face losing house points. Unless reason is given either in the absent thread or through private message. If reason is given it will count as if you were present for that class lesson.
Make Up Assignment(s): For anyone wishing to make up for missing a lesson or just want extra house points, feel free to write an essay on a topic you missed and submit it to my office before the end of the year. (A small paragraph will do.)
This was Thorsten’s last class of the week and it was with the fifth years. They had there OWLs to study for this year and being a new professor he hoped to prepare them for it. Though ghoul and ghost studies, wasn’t exactly a hard subject theory wise it was when you had to deal with ghouls that it became more complex. Not that Thorsten was worried about that. He just hoped that they would continue the class next year. However he had a year to get to know them and see really how many of them enjoyed the class as much as he did.
Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as he looked to see theirs. He wondered how many of them questioned the stuffed corpses. Getting up and going to the front of his desk he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the rules and the subject topic on the board. “Good afternoon and welcome back to ghoul and ghost studies.” Thorsten greeted before continuing his introduction. “I am Professor Eckstein you’re new professor. You will follow these five rules when in my class. Be on time, prepared and ready. Pay attention, no wands, and be involved.” He informed them before reminding them of their test at the end of the year. “Reminder, you have O.W.L testing this year. So we will be preparing for that through the year.”
“Now, I would like names and houses from each of you. As for me I attended Durmstrang and am former Keltainen. That would be a mix of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw here I believe.” Thorsten asked of them before adding. “While we do that let us do review so I know what to focus on later, one topic each please.”

Dmitri walked into Ghost Studies and was more than surprised to see stuffed corpses in the room. He heard there was a new professor, but he wasn't really expecting...that. After a moment he realised he'd stopped in the door way in surprise, so instead of simply standing there he quickly made it to his seat. He glanced up at their new professor, then leaned back in his seat, surveying the room. It wasn't until the professor started his introduction that Dmitri looked at him once again. "I'm Dmitri Reed, Ravenclaw. I do believe we talked about resurrection back in our third year." He went on, his voice rather small compared to previous years.

Listening to his students it looked like they paying attention and at least recalled some information. It was a good base for all the review he was going to do come the end of the year. “Nice to see you remember previous topics, 10 points for your participation.” He told Dmitri before going on to what the lesson would be. “For the rest of our time we will be discussing ghouls.” Standing up from his leaning option at the front of his desk, the German wizard flicked his wand at the board once more. The board wiping clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.
“Ghouls resemble a slimy ogre with buck teeth. They are not so much dangerous but they can be a nuisance. They find their homes in attics or barns of wizarding families. I too had a ghoul at a time, noisy creatures. They mostly groan and throw objects, which makes them rather dimwitted. However, great taking care of pests, as that’s what they eat.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They resemble a slimy ogre with buck teeth. As the classification suggests, ghouls are not so much dangerous but they can be a nuisance. They find their homes in attics or barns of wizarding families. They however take care of pests, as that’s what they eat.” He explained before going on. “At the ministry, Ghouls are beasts classified as a scale of two. That means Harmless or may be domesticated. They have the ghoul task force there in the regulation and control department. Their job is to remove unwanted ghouls from houses.” He finished as he made his way back to the front of the classroom.
Turning back around to face his students, Thorsten decided to mention a different type of ghoul. “There are also varieties of ghouls. One in particular, the Chameleon Ghoul can disguise itself into everyday objects. Thus avoiding detection… Now any questions?” He asked before looking up at the clock. “If not then you are dismissed.”
Thorsten decided to make this class lesson relatively fun. How? He was going to get his students to locate the ghouls in the classroom. That was technically the purpose of the class after all. Standing outside of the classroom, he waited for his students to arrive. “Good afternoon,” Thorsten greeted before explaining why he was outside of the class today. “Today you might wonder why I’m outside the classroom. We will be catching ghouls today. They are hidden in the room and you’re job is to find, then catch them.” He informed them before going into how to do so.
“The ghouls we will work with are hidden as objects. In order to find them you need the Ghoul Finder Charm. The incantation is Deprendus Lamia, pronounced Dee-PRAIN-dos Lah-mee-ah.” Thorsten told them carefully pronouncing it despite his German accent. “Wand movement is a tiny flick. If successful tip of wand will glow from faint yellow to velvet red the closer you get to a ghoul. The red glow appears when within a three meter radius of a ghoul.” He explained. “Concentration on spell means it will remain active. Lack of concentration breaks spell. As for capture be creative, no fire please.” He finished before letting them into the room. “Now good luck, details of spell are on board for reference” Thorsten told them allowing them to have at locating the several ghouls thought the classroom.

“Inferi or an inferius is a dead body reanimated by dark art of Necromancy, Which is the art of raising the dead.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “They are bewitched to do dark wizard’s bidding much like a zombie. As such they have no free will and cannot think for themselves." He said before adding. "These gaunt, skeletal beings appear pale white in color but very in eye and hair color like any other human.”
“Clearly no spell can bring back the dead making Inferi merely corpse puppets and not living. They cannot feel, as such they are immune to bodily harm and have enough strength to kill even drag human away.” Thorsten continued as he continued back up to the front of the room. “It can be noted that they can speak as well.” He added before asking. “Now any questions?”

Selina found it amusing she was taking a class on the subject of death right before her class in the preservation of life. There was a certain symmetry with this. She arrived for class in typical fashion, in plenty of time to get seated, and be ready for class when the professor started his lecture.
"We studied the basic characteristics and properties of ghosts, professor," Selina said, after raising her hand, when the review of previous terms' classwork started.

When the professor opened things up for questions, she raised her hand. "Professor, if the Ministry regards ghouls as mostly harmless, enough to only give them an 'XX' rating, how have they managed to gain a reputation, at least among Non-Wizarding folk, for hanging out in graveyards and consuming human flesh? Are there, or were there, a variety of ghoul whom did these sort of things, and this was the story which has been perpetuated?"

When Selina raised her hand Thorsten gestured to her, handing over the floor to her. Listening to her question it was one that could easily be answered.“Well according to ancient Arabian folklore, ghouls were portrayed as fiendish demons associated with graveyards and consuming human flesh. Shapeshifters that prey on children, drink blood, steal coin, and eat the dead. After consuming human flesh they assume the shape of the one they late ate. As time went, the lore followed generations.” He answered her before adding. “It could be theoreed the Chameleon Ghoul is similar if not same as ghoul folklore speaks about.” It was only a theory but seeing as the Chameleon Ghoul could shapeshift as could the ghouls that the Arabian folklore talked about.
