DISTORTED WORLD OF TRANCE: Abandoned Spaceship

Prompt: It used to be a Federation ship, once upon a time. But it went dark years ago, vanished into the black depths of uncharted space. With no contact from the crew, the worst was assumed.

But now, on the edges of the galaxy, it's reappeared, with an SOS signal playing on repeat, in that tinny voice that pleads for help, over and over again.

We all know better than to believe it, of course. But still, it had important information aboard. And your team has been tasked to fetch it from the Abandoned Spaceship, whether you like it or not.

All players: You will need to navigate through the Abandoned Spaceship, but that may be more difficult than it first seems. Please follow the steps below.

- All players may notice something odd: they are in a space suit, with a helmet, a light. But you can't keep it on the whole time... It only has so much battery.

- If you DIE IN THE TRANCE you immediately are ejected from the Distorted Portal but suffer side effects of hallucinations for 24 hours where you continuously see everything in black and white. You also hear a voice calling to you about home...
- It is recommended that players go through the rooms at the same pace (ie: I am player 1, in room 1, I roll 3 times and wait for the others before ICly proceeding to room 2 together, though they can skip players that become inactive after 24 hours).

gaia_crown Step 1: Room 1

You step out of the airlock into the hallway, and it's as dark as you'd feared. Cables hang down from the ceiling like vines, sparking at the ends. A lone light flickers at the end of the path, revealing a sign that says CANTEEN.

It is deathly still.

- Roll 1d10. You must do this three times.
- If in ANY of your dice rolls you roll 1, you hear rustling behind you that gets louder and louder. You run, but trip over the wrecked floor, careening forward. A crack has formed in your helmet, air slowly filtering out, the chill of space filtering in. even if you manage to untangle yourself, the pressure shifts and your helmet obliterates entirely. The darkness filters in around you, until YOU ARE DEAD, and wake up from trance.
- For each time you roll even you lose 20% of your total HP. You feel wearier...
- If you pass, proceed to STEP 2.

gaia_crown STEP 2: Room 2

The canteen is even more of a wreck than the main room. An electronic buzzing sound is loud in your ears, emanating from what used to be some sort of food replicator, now knocked over and torn asunder. The room is long, but a sign that reads DECK can be seen at the far end of the room.

But you hear noises, now, the clicking of claws against metal grates. It echoes all around you.

- Roll 1d6. You must do this three times.
- For each time you roll even you lose 20% of your total HP. You feel wearier...
-If any of your dice rolls to a 1 an alien drops down on you from above, blind and inky black, its carapace impossible to penetrate. It winds its tail around you, segmented and tipped with something sharp. It slices through your suit and not-so-gently digs into your ribs, puncturing your lung. It opens its slavering jaws, and its tongue slithers out... but it's a second mouth, armed with teeth, prehensile and hungry. It tears through your suit, going for your throat. YOU ARE DEAD, and wake up from trance.
- If you manage to make it through, you are on Step 3.

gaia_crown Step 3: Building 3

You've finally made it to the deck, and it is filled with eggs that come up to your waist. They cover the floor, and the door, somehow, shuts behind you with a pneumatic hiss. The only other exit is across the field of alien-spawns-to-be.

You hope you make it out alive.

Roll 1d6. You need to do this four times.
- Whenever you roll even, one of the nearest eggs begins to shake, its sides slowly unpeeling like a blooming flower. Better hurry.
- If you roll three evens, an egg abruptly hatches, resulting in a strange, wriggling beige form that looks like some sort of spider launching out of it. It skitters towards you on countless legs, its tail lashing behind it. More eggs hatch after it, and soon you are surrounded. You try to beat them off, to run towards the one escape you have, but-- One of them manages to crack your helmet, slithering close, sliding its tail down your throat, filling you with poison and something more. In several hours, a new creature bursts from your chest-- You are DEAD, and wake up from trance.
- If you manage to pass through this phase you are at the end.

gaia_crown Step 4: THE END.
- You finally see it, the computer room, with all the databanks and logs you need to bring back to the federation.

- The files begin to transfer. 1%, 5%, 25%. An alarm begins to sound off, alerting every creature aboard that someone is here, in this room. You begin to sweat. 40%, 55%.

It's not worth it. Turning tail, abandoning the information, you run back towards the airlock, back to your ship-- but it's too late. A swarm of aliens appear, their black, bony bodies blocking your way. Slowly, they encroach, as if you're a deer that might bolt. And you would, if you had anywhere to go.

But they, like wolves, are hungry. And they will feed.

YOU ARE DEAD.

She had already had a horrible enough time with the portal she'd been sucked up into with Gretchen. Last time it had happened in the infirmary, this time it happened when she was out in the wreckage of the lab building, helping others rebuild the stone block.

It came swiftly and scooped her up, eager to throw her into more madness.

---

When she opened her eyes, a door was opened up before her. Only it wasn't quite a door, it was a hatch, a sort of circular sliding thing. She felt heavier, probably because she was in a suit, yet somehow lighter because she was floating. She somehow knew she and Abbi were the co-captains of a ship in the federation; Abbi was the true leader and Scout was her level headed pilot.

Oh yeah, and she was in <******** space.

Her first response was to flail wildly at Abbi because OH NO WHAT'S GOING ON???

This sort of thing didn't happen to Abbi.
Not lately at least. Sure, there had been the occasional dream world thing, actually that happened a lot only not recently so that's how she was classifying it. As one does when presented with alternate realities. It was like a coping mechanism, only it never made her feel any better.

All the same, Abbi had been minding her own business in the library, totally not being silly and counting her steps to find the shortest distance between the aisles (it was easier to take bigger steps with longer legs, she had concluded with a lot of serious sounding noises) when all of a sudden... She wasn't.

---

The feeling of weightlessness sets in first, it further disorients the girl as she wakes so that she immediately grasps at something. Gloved hands find a metal wall and she tries to look less like she was completely freaked out a moment ago because everything she's supposed to know about this scenario filters in.
She is a co-captain (cool), Scout is the pilot (excellent), most of her friends were aliens (awesome), she was in space (eh, a little scary honestly), and right now they were on a mission (whaaaat).

Flailing limbs catch Abbi's attention and, using one hand on the wall to steady herself, she turns to see Scout. Her free hand tries to coax reassurance but Abbi is immediately distracted because there is totally an omnitool on her arm.
For a long second she stares at it before she holds it up to Scout, and in somber, hushed tones says, "We're in Mass Effect. We're in Mass Effect and I'm a Captain, I don't care what happens next this is so cool."
That... Would kind of answer Scout's questioning flails!

At least Abbi was familiar. That was one thing about this situation that made sense.

"I don't- Abbi we're in space," she pointed out. There were more pressing concerns like whAT THE HECK WAS GOING ON.

Abbi only nodded enthusiastically to the idea that they were in space.
"Like, way far out too. None of this moon landing business either." She clarified, after she had to tap on her omnitool a bit for the details. It was funny how certain bits of information filtered into her head, facts and memories to supplement what she'd read, as though she'd been here, as though she'd lived this life. Maybe that was how the dream-thing got you. She would make sure to be extra careful.

After a moment of maneuvering, the girl got her bearings as best she could in no gravity, and waved at Scout.
"Your omnitool, the thing on your arm, its got all your info. We've got a job to do!" She said this all cheerily before she lowered her voice to the quietest Abbi was actually capable of. "This isn't real... I don't think. But we have to play along. Have you... Have you never done this?"
Been sucked into an alternate, dream, made-up world scenario, not the space ship thing.

Scout very awkwardly clung to the side of the spaceship.

"It's space- we can't just GO out there!" she said, feeling like the only level headed one between them.

Had she done this before? Had she done this before??? "Abbi it's SPACE," she repeated, as though saying it enough times would shock the girl back to her senses. They just had to wake up. This was a crazy dream. Yes.

"Well of course not! We have to make sure our suits are in order." Whereas Scout felt like the only one being logical, Abbi thought the same of herself.
"We're going to have to go out there. If we don't then we're going to mess up... Whatever this is." This time she pushed off the wall and floated across the way toward Scout. It was a bit difficult to figure out where she wanted to land, but was grateful for all the hand holds built into the walls.

"This probably isn't real. This sort of stuff happens to us Hunters, its like a dream. But we know its a dream, we just have to play along until we can get out of it." Despite her calm, there is an underlying enthusiasm to what Abbi says. "Its like a game. We know its not real, but they don't, and we have to play by their rules."
And this game was totally Mass Effect and Abbi was super pumped and c'mon Scout this would be fun!!

And oddly, Abbi's enthusiasm helped. Normally enthusiasm pushed her away, but Abbi's was done in a sort of soft, explaining way that kept her from panicking.

"Okay," she agreed softly. She offered her hand- they should at least stick together.

Surprised that Scout not only accepts the explaination, but then offers her hand, Abbi is immediately startled. Not in the over the top dramatic fashion she is fond of, more understated and hushed. But she recovers quickly with a smile, a small nod, and a gentle squeeze of gloves fingers when she places her hand in Scout's. This feels momentous because the woman previously seemed so guarded, and even if this is just a dream, Abbi still holds the moment dear.

"Here we go!" She chimes as she hits the button to unlock their door with her free hand, frowning into the darkened hallway. "Huh... Not what I expected but... Let's do this!"
Carefully she stepped into the hallway, sure to not move faster than Scout.

Meanwhile Scout was just thinking s**t s**t we're gonna die s**t. At least Abbi could recount the tale romantically.

It was odd, walking in space. Things were weightless and perhaps she should have felt awed and airy, but instead she felt rather impatient. It was so slow! She had patience, but good gosh.

Still, at least she was holding hands with Abbi ... which was kind of difficult with all the faulty wiring around. Her mechanic's itch was tingling; if they had the time she would have stopped to take a look around.

"Watch out," she told Abbi, pointing to a stray wire that snake around a bar near Abbi. "Looks like we're not too welcome here ..."

The more Abbi considered things (the space ship, the weird periphery knowledge that Chel and Dawson and other friends were safely on the first ship but were actual aliens, the whole being a captain thing) the more she began to suspect that maybe Scout was part of the dream too. Not in the conscious way Abbi was, but unreal too. Maybe that's why she let the girl hold her hand.
It was a very important point, after all.

A bit lost in her thinking she only barely ducked when Scout pointed out the wire, finding it difficult to really pull herself down when her body was so insistent on floating.
"Yikes! Thanks for the heads up... Heads down?" She laughed thinly. "Yeah, either something didn't want the first people here and wrecked their ship to get to them... Or we're dealing with something bad. Real bad." Though she didn't say it, Abbi knew they had to be careful and was glad Scout was so cautious already.

Scout frowned because it wasn't real, but the mission felt urgent; the death felt REAL. She squeezed Abbi's hand a little tighter. Abbi was an intermediate. She would keep Scout safe, right?

They continued through the ship and Scout kept her caution up. "Would you keep talking? It makes it feel not so .... empty." Spooky, scary, sad. Abbi was like a little lightbulb.

This Scout was definitely not the real Scout because Abbi had pegged her as someone who preferred silence, especially in dire situations like this. But never the kind of person to deny someone's request for help, the girl grinned back at the woman.
Could she ever talk!

"This totally reminds me of this great game I used to play. Did you ever play any video games? I was super into games yanno before the island and all the Hunter stuff. It kinda sucks not having my DS with me during off time, I bet all my villagers moved out of my town." Even if her words are nonsense, she says them with that same quiet enthusiasm for she understands that being loud is probably not a good idea, but she's just so excited to make Scout feel better. Even if it's not really Scout...

Actually, Scout didn't really mind talking so much. She kind of preferred it because if another person was talking, she could listen on happily while they chattered. Abbi was perfect for such things.

"I didn't, no," she said in response. Scout was barely cognizant of Mario let alone any other video game things. She didn't know what a DS or what villagers were (she assumed this was some kind of medieval peasant game, hence "villagers"?) but she made a mental note that Abbi liked those things.

Towards the next door she went for the keypad to press a button and make it open, but it shocked her and she jerked back slightly. "Don't touch..." she concluded with a mumble.

The small reply from Scout is all the girl needs to continue talking, to start another thread.
"Oh man! You'll have to come play with me sometime! I'm saving up to get a big tv and a game system runic'd. I need a bigger room first, I hope I can move into an apartment soon, but when I've got it all set up you should come play!"

They reached the door and Abbi stopped, carefully bracing herself against the wall that seemed safe to touch. She winced at the electricity and flashed a reassuring grin to the woman. Even if she wasn't real, that had probably hurt!

But it also hadn't helped them getting into the canteen... For a moment she considered it, but figured in the end there was no helping it.
Abbi let go of Scout, edging her back slightly from the door.
"Hold on and... Stand back." She instructed, staring down the keypad.
She screwed up all her courage and punched it.

The door opened with a shudder and a woosh, while Abbi howled her pain into the phrase "bosh'tet".
