Vi

11;23 a.m.
Day 1 of Investigation of Missing Child. Henceforth referred to as Charlie's Case
.

The morning started off as most mornings did in the wasteland. Bleak. Even though for a wastelander, Vi had a pretty good set up, she still had to wake up to that brownish sky and the noise of the water purifier, (If one could call it that) sputtering to life just as the sun came up. She sat up with a groan and began to pull on her clothes when a banging erupted from her front door. With another groan, Vi stumbled out of her bedroom, through the ramshackle office that was her living room, and answered the door.

Vi was looking down at a crumpled, heaving mess of a woman. "Can I help yo-"

"PLEASE! My daughter! Shes gone missing. She was out looking for food and never came home."

Vi took the woman by the shoulder and shushed her, "Come inside and tell me about it. Don't need to be making a scene and waking up the who settlement." Sh guided the woman inside and got the details.

"Alright, last seen leaving town heading northeast accompanied by a dog. Black mastiff mix right?" the woman nodded. "Carried a satchel and hunting rifle. This was three days ago. No word has come. This is abnormal?" The woman nodded again and sniffled. "Alright, I will set out today. Now the usual fees apply-"

"I have the money! Just please find my daughter! PLEASE!"

"Alright! I'm taking you at your word. I will find your daughter. Charlie was her name?"

"Yes, Charlie. Charlotte Baker." With that, Vi escorted the woman to the door with more reassurances. Then she went to pack for an extended trip into the wastes. She was hoping that Charlie may have gotten stuck or sidetracked, and that this would be an easy job. Vi's gut didn't seem to think so, and her gut had a nasty record of being right.

Shack locked up tight, Vi left the well guarded settlement, asking the guards on duty if they knew anything about the whereabouts of Charlie. They all said the same thing. She headed off three days ago to the northeast. So off to the north east VI went.

((Lemme know if there's anything you want me to edit. I tried to keep it vague but not too lacking. I just wanted to really get this started. I will work on post formatting on my day off so it's easier to and more fun to read and look at. Do we want pictures?))

"Another Raider mark..." Carl grumbled, exasperated. At 5'10" and being on the lean side, he hadn't quite convinced his superiors that he was a fair choice for the various mutants and beasts that filled the high ranking operations, and his anxious mannerisms didn't help. "I mean, I'm not gonna question the captain, mostly because he'll kick my teeth in, but it would be nice to see some real action instead of these hide and seek missions, bashing the mohawks off of lunatics in caves. I haven't even gotten P.A. training yet."

"You cry too much, new guy." Bart sighed, laying on the dirt with his eyes closed. "You're getting paid to walk and shoot things, which you would be doing anyway, but minus the commission."

They had set up camp last night on the way back from supply pick up. At sunrise, the radio transmission came through notifying Carl to break off and head north to clean up after a botched extermination mission. Unfortunately, due north was the site of a large chasm in the landscape, so he would have to head west and then proceed north by northeast towards the assumed location of his mark.

Carl pulled his boots on and slung his assault rifle and a sack of rations over alternate shoulders, before giving a half hearted salute to Bart as he turned to go. His armor was a mix of what he could scavenge; leather boots, metal armor covered with dents from low caliber bullets and fatigues underneath. Despite this rather poor defense, he got by quite well without injury. He excelled at hand to hand combat, and could move in utter silence until the first shot rang out. Sometimes, it didn't have to.

With a long journey ahead, Carl looked up at the bleak morning sky, and whistled a tune he had heard back in town, lest the quiet of the wastes slowly drive him insane.

Vi

Vi spent the first few hours simply looking for a trail to follow. Heading in the direction Charlie was seen starting off was a given, but after loosing sight of the settlement's large, patched metal walls, Charlie could have gone in any direction after prey. Vi had to me methodical.

Luck was shining on her this day. Up ahead was a good sized paw print. The shape was of a dog's and the size said it wasn't the stunted, mange riddled feral
dogs that roamed the wasteland. This had to be the mastiff"s prints. She has a trail. Following it was a simple matter, as long as the tracks and overturned turf were visible.

After a good few miles, a new set of tracks joined the set of small boot prints and paw prints. These boot prints were bigger, looked heavier, and there were three sets of them. "That can't mean anything good." Vi murmured to herself with a frown. They didn't look fresh enough for her to worry about the group being nearby, but she made sure her 10mm handgun was loaded and ready, just in case. She had brought with a scoped hunting rifle and a combat shotgun as well, which she had slung over her back, the two barrels crossing in an X across her spine. Vi continued her pursuit.

Carl had been skirting the edge of the chasm for a few hours now, making good time considering the distance. Looking down into the split, there was only darkness. Occasionally, he would kick a rock or football sized cockroach into the void, then stop to listen for bottom. He never heard one. Based on his (basically unfounded) assumption, he should only be another mile or so to the end of the chasm.

In the distance, He could see a solid horizon, so he was pretty confident in his estimate. In his experience, animals didn't come near the chasm much since there was no accessible water or vegetation in sight. Crazies and ghouls were always a possibility, so just in case, he slung his rifle around and tightened the strap, keeping it hanging just low enough to allow him to raise it to his eye if he needed to pick 'em off at a distance.

He scratched his sunburned scalp and sighed. "Frickin' hate solo runs."

As the day wore on, Vi found that the trail, now that there was a good many sets of prints to follow, easy to follow. So easy in fact that she was getting bored by the time the sun was approaching it's set. There was a good hour left of sun when she began to play "I Spy" with herself as a means to keep amused and alert. "I spy something... brownish grey... That rock! Yes!" She kicked the rock in question and continued as is scuttled across the dirt. "I spy something... Greyish brown... That dead tree? Right again! Sweet!" She kicked the rock again and it flew forward, hitting the dead and petrified tree trunk with a thok. "I spy, with my little eye... something... grey and brown. EVERYTHING!?" She flung her arms out to encompass the world of desolation around her. "Correct! Wow... I'm good at this game."

"I spy..." She stopped and got low. Bringing her hunting rifle around and aiming it, she looking into the scope. She had seen something moving on her horizon, and she meant to find out what it was before it found her.

((Sorry for the wait. Not normally so social in one week, but I blame St. Patrick's Day. Should be back to my usual homebody self now. I like the social life, but with my work schedule the way it is, it's just not physically feasible.))

The sun would set soon, and Carl had just passed the end of the chasm. He had come to a trail of footsteps and begun to follow it slowly, examining the character of each pair. "Holy hell that's a big dog... Are super dog mutants a thing now?" He thought to himself, as he looked down at the group. Reaching into his pocket, he fished out a scope he had broken off a mangled pair of binoculars and looked further down the trail. He couldn't see anyone...

He hadn't planned for a group. The mark was supposed to be one guy, and him having friends meant Carl was suddenly in for a bumpy ride. At least, he thought, it wouldn't be a surprise. On a hunch, he turned around and looked back down the trail. "s**t! I'm being tailed!" He said through the sudden tightness of his chest as he dropped his scope and dove into a nearby patch of briars. He grit his teeth in pain as he crawled on his belly through the thorns, hoping they'd lose him in the subtle movement caused by the wind.

An assault rifle has decent range, but without a scope it was a pretty stupid idea to start a long distance exchange of bullets. He calmed himself with a little deep breathing and collected his thoughts. "I dropped my eye piece like an idiot, I'm miles away from backup, and I'm in the middle of freakin' nowhere... Let's just hope they are in the same situation. Maybe they aren't hostile. At any rate, I'm probably about to get shot. Let's just hope it's low caliber..." Carl said aloud, as if reassuring himself. He took a deep breath and set his gun down on the ground beside him. Bringing his feet underneath him, he raised his open hands and stood up slowly.
((No problem. You're the only person so far that's even responding semi regularly, so I appreciate it.))

What ever it was that she had "Spied" had noticed her too. Or so it seemed. It was hiding now. "Jeepers, I hope it's not a burrower." She griped as she got back up on her feet. She made her way cautiously over to where she had seen to form. It had noticed her and knew well enough to hide. That suggested it was not an dangerous animal. If it had been a raider, and it had noticed her, they wouldn't be hiding. They liked to come running at the sign of another person. Definitely not super mutant. Even from that distance she could tell it wasn't that big.

She knew better than to hope it was Charlie. There were still those footprints, and she was 90% certain the owners to those tracks had Charlie, or what was left of the poor girl. When Vi came into hearing range, she scanned the area, seeing many probable hiding spots for someone to use. "Hey! Who's out there?! Come out slowly and I won't shoot." She made sure she was close enough to cover so if there was indeed someone there, and they were hostile, she would be able to dive for cover in the event of a firefight.

((No problem mate. Sorry you aren't having much luck with other friends at the moment. Hope it picks up soon. I know what it's like to have a lack of activity when you're actually active.))

Lunoh

"Hail, fellow traveler!"Carl said in a friendly voice. He had definitely heard that somewhere before. "I uh... I'm just passing through. Noticed you had a weapon so I hid. No suspicious activity here, I assure you."

He swiveled his foot a little closer to his weapon in case he had to tuck and roll. Just because they act passive doesn't mean they aren't psychopaths. Not around here at least. "So you uh... I mean... you're a ranger or something, right? I'm just helping a friend out, looking for another lost friend. I don't mean any harm."

He was half sincere. He was looking for someone. He couldn't rightly pass off as a wanderer in armor, and he wasn't ready to submit to mercy just yet. He played the friendly route and kept and offset eye on her hands, waiting for any sudden movements. Unsure of what exactly to do, random gunfire not being the best thing for a hunting mission, he just smiled awkwardly and played up the part of the frightened traveler.

Vi

When a man came out of hiding, Vi raised her hunting rifle at him, but from the hip. When she saw he was unarmed, at least for the moment as his gun was on the ground, she let the rifle hang at her thigh, finger off the trigger. "No harm?" She asked, eyeing the man's outfit. "Fancy armor for a traveler. You a merc?" She leaned her weight on one hip, showing casual interest. "If you move slow, you can pick up your gun, but holster it. I'll put mine away as you do."

He said he was looking for someone, and while she was sure he was not telling her everything, it did not seem like a total lie. She could smell a lie like a hot dump. He was on the same trail she was. Were they looking for the same person. "I'm looking for someone as well. I'm sort of a detective, of sorts. Call me Vi." She informed him.

"Alright... nice to meet you, Vi." He said as genteel as he could muster, given the tension of the situation. "I'm on a job, yeah. It isn't what I thought it was though..." Chuck said as he slowly bent at the knees to grasp the strap of his gun. He stood up cautiously and put his arm and head through, slinging it across his back. "It wasn't supposed to be a group. Something changed between last night and today. Must've picked up a hostage or somethin'. Plus a big a** dog. So you're a detective? What'd you hear?"

He put his hand back up slowly, keeping them open and side strafing towards the trail to look for his scope. Without waiting for an answer, he added "I got dispatched this morning. I'm only looking for one guy, but if he's got buddies then... I'll deal with that when I get there. An extra hand couldn't hurt though." softly as he put his hand out to her in greeting. He was still poised, and at this distance she'd have to be a hell of a draw to take him out before he could reach her. Even so, he wasn't feeling much hostility from her.

Vi

Vi watched carefully as the man picked up his gun and slung it across his back. She did the same. She listened as he explained in more depth the reason he was out here, and that he wouldn't mind an extra hand. "It may be that we're after the same mark, more or less. I was hire to find a girl and her dog by the girl's mother. It seems she was taken by a group of raiders or possibly slavers. If we are after the same group, I don't see any harm teaming up for this one go."

She noticed a few feet away a scope lay discarded in the dirt. She reasoned it had to be his, as he seemed to be looking for something. Vi stepped over it and grabbed it. She held it out to him as he extended his hand in greeting. She placed it in his open hand. "I've told you my name, what do I call you? If we're teaming up, that is."

He gave a slight nod and smiled as he received the scope. "I'm Carl. I don't know anything about a girl and her dog really, but word from dispatch was this guy was part of a larger group and got away when they sent a squad to squash 'em. He might have taken a hostage for negotiation purposes, but most of the time raiders aren't that damn smart. He probably just saw the opportunity and took it, or maybe one of these other two assholes already had her. The weird thing is... why didn't they off the dog? Not normal for raiders to be animal lovers 'cept... maybe they're gonna eat 'im." He had drifted off on a tangent. He shook it out of his head and turned around.

Carl turned around and pocketed his scope. Looking over his shoulder, he spoke back to Vi. "I'll let you do the thinking, Vi. We're gonna have to think and walk at the same time though, because if this jerk off makes it to the caves up north before we get to him, we're screwed. That's bein' optimistic. If the guy I'm lookin' for and the kid you're lookin' for both got picked up by slavers, we could be in for a hard night."

((sorry about that. Still bad at this coding stuff.))
