When everything turns to black, You don't know where to go... You need something to justify your soul. Silence is broken, confidence is gone; Everything you're holding onto falls. FA N C H O N M A R I E C O H E N Professor of DADA │ Muggleborn │ Haitian
Fanchon sat in her very comfortable chair, stroking Jacques, her cat, curled up in her lap, as though she were a Bond villain, and gave the room one final once over. She had enough tables and chairs to fit everyone, she'd made sure the room was spotless, in case anyone had any dust allergies, and she'd tried to make it.... if not quite welcoming, at least slightly less intimidating, although that was a bit difficult when the decor of the room literally included a giant skeleton of some magical beast suspended above the class. Ah well. They'd have to get used to Hogwarts's quirks at some point, and DADA was a notoriously challenging class, although not quite to the level of say, Transfiguration or Potions. However, it was extremely important, and if she had her way, she'd make it mandatory for all seven years. Alas, she could not have her way, so she only had five years to drill as much knowledge as possible through their hairy little heads. If she could make sure all of them could cast a proper shield charm, patronus, disarm someone, and defeat a boggart, she'd be happy. It would raise their life expectancy significantly. As the first years filtered into the room, she observed them stoically, not rising from her seat (and disturbing Jacques' nap) until everyone had taken their seats and were (mostly) quiet. "Bonjou. Good morning," she translated calmly, confident that her accent, while strong, was not an excuse for them to not listen. "I am Fanchon Cohen, and I am responsible for ensuring that all of you can recognize dark magic, and properly defend yourselves against it. My rules are written on the board. Follow them, don't follow them, it's your choice. This class is largely about choices. I'm here to demonstrate to you how to make good ones. Can anyone," she scanned the room, "Tell me what the Dark Arts are? In some magical schools, they comprise their own, separate subject, but here at Hogwarts we take a more... benevolent approach." All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. All the rules are changing now; you're living in sin... Everything around you is caving in; all you're holding onto- Is slipping like water through your hands.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ DADA was Daniel's only class for the day and since it was late in the morning, he managed to skim through the first chapter of his textbook before coming to class and to his relief, he didn't feel completely lost afterwards. After pulling out his notebook, Daniel dutifully copied down the rules of the class and waited for the slightly intimidating professor to start the class. From her rules, she seemed quite strict and no-nonsense, but Daniel didn't mind.
When everyone arrived, the professor stood up and introduced herself, her speech corroborating Daniel's thoughts. To his relief, she hadn't asked anyone to introduce themselves (yet) and he refrained from saying anything. Hopefully this class would be one of the more interesting one's he'd have this year.

Anastasia was one of the first students to enter the class room. The dim atmosphere sent a small chill down the young girls's spine. She wasn't scared in the least bit, but the vibe in the room exuded what the children would be studying. She spied the professor lounging in her chair at the head of the room. A bobbed tail cat was cuddled in her lap as she stroked the fur gingerly, obviously awaiting for her students to find their seats. She found her seat towards the front of the class on the left hand side. Not exactly front row, but the second would do. She didn't want to seem like a brown-nosing kiss-up just yet. That would have to wait.
Giving a polite nod, she sat herself down and let her backpack down to her right. Fishing out her textbook, and parchment with her white feathered quill, she set her desk up organized and ready for her first lesson in Defense against the Dark Arts. She knew this would be one of those classes she would be excited to come to. Crossing her legs daintily, she let her foot tap in the air as she waited for more students to file in. One after one, they piled in taking seat after seat. Some chatting, some laughing, others were rather quiet as they ran to their seat without speaking to anyone or even looking up. Ana watched them all, getting a feel for how her class would be. She sensed a moderate level class. Not too many over achievers, just students learning what the need to learn to pass.
The moment the professor began to speak, Ana felt at home. The French rolled off her tongue and the accent reminded her of her mothers. Stern yet beautiful. She listen closely to professor Cohen as she addressed the class. She explained her rules and regulations and a brief chat about her job. She then asked a broad question out to the class. She asked what Dark Arts referred to. Giving her a moment to completely finish her sentence. Anastasia let her hand raise up above her head. Giving a second for an acknowledgement, she then spoke up. "Bonjour, Professeur Cohen." She greeted fluently in French. She knows she will not get to speak it very often unless she is with her mother and that side of the family. "The Dark Arts are any type of magic that is mainly used to cause harm, control, or death to the victim." Ana simply explained. She could go into further detail if the professor asked, but that was the slim of it. &&BLOOD :: Pureiiii&&HOUSE :: Hufflepuffiiii&&YEAR :: Firstiiii&&LOCATION :: DADAiiii &&COMPANY :: Studentsiiii&&MOOD :: Intriguediiii&&OUTFIT ::B&Y

I don't have time for dancin' That's just gonna have to wait a while Ain't got time for messin' around And it's not my style... The Defense classroom looked strange, with a massive skeleton over the heads of all the students. Calliandra itched to pull out books until she found out what it was, but she had other things to think about right now. She settled into a seat in the middle of the room, pulling out her materials and heading a page of notes: DADA – Lesson One. Her professor looking like an intimidating woman, and the long and threatening list of rules outlined on the board supported that idea. While the list clearly outlined that punishments would be meted out, Calliandra was pretty sure she could manage to follow them. And the cat curled up on the professor's lap softened her image somewhat, at least for Calliandra, who enjoyed animals far more than people.
When the professor asked for the definition of Dark Arts, Calliandra paused. She wasn't sure she wanted to offer an answer – she had just answered a question in Charms, and it wouldn't be useful if the other students assumed she was a know-it-all. In fact, she didn't want to be a know-it-all at all. It was a relief of a sort when the Hufflepuff offered an answer. Calliandra got to stay silent and observe, which suited her well. She absently drew a swirling pattern in one corner of her parchment, mostly to keep her hands active while she paid attention to the events of the room. And I'm almost there I'm almost there People down here think I'm crazy But I don't care... OOC: Say anything. Charlie came to class, this one intrigued him. He had assumed there would be a bad side to magic and a class about defending against them sounded cool. He found a seat next to the window mid row perhaps Gertie could sit with him today. However, he was really unsure what to answer the question. now if he had an essay on it, he could do that but quick answer, he was lost.

Gertrude Laura Adelwood Adopted Muggleborn First Year Hufflepuff I go by Gertie... Oh and I'm 11 years old... Location: DADA Class - Wednesday @ 11:00am Gertie was looking forward to defensive class. She didn’t really know what it was but maybe it would be as fun as charms. She could hope right. Taking a seat next to Charlie, she got out her books and waited for class to begin. Turning her attention to their professor when she spoke, she then looked to the board. There were rules which Gertie would easily follow. She was a good Hufflepuff that followed all the rules. Gertie didn’t exactly follow the whole choices part of what Professor Cohen said but she was sure she’d understand eventually. The red head knew that the Dark Arts were bad, the opposite of light. That’s why they were learning defense right? It made sense. Protect yourself from dark forces. She remained silent since a Stacy took care of answering the question. Gertie didn’t think she’d have a good answer out loud anyways. Status: Excited Wearing: Hufflepuff Uniform With: Class... Charlie OOC: ---No one's doubting your brains or creativity But it's your heart I'm interested in Ravenclaw's nice, but I believe you'll flourish best in Hufflepuff!

Defense Against the Dark Arts. Now this was a class Roman could get into. (And that was before he even noticed the giant looming skeleton hanging over their heads.) But so long as there's more magical lessons than textbook assignments, he'd be happy. Though he supposed it really all depended on the professor. Word around the castle was she was new, so not even the upperclassmen knew what to expect. At first glance, she seemed... wary. As if the professor hadn't decided either on how to feel about her students. Which was a pretty weird thought, Roman realized. Shouldn't all professors love their students? (Ha!) He knew that was bollocks from his years at muggle school. He didn't know why he thought a magical school would be any different. But instead of loitering like a useless lump, he actually decided to copy the rules down for this class and summed up what the girl in the second row had said. What was her name again? Annabella or Anastasia or something like that?

You fall through the trees, And you pray with your knees on the ground. For the things that you need... With your lust and your greed weighing down. And you weaken your love, And you hold it above your head. Success is a song of the heart, not a song of your bed! D O N E L L A O L W E N B R O W N hufflepuff │ first year │ halfblood
Donella had no issues with rules or sternness, given her upbringing. Either she and Billy were so well-behaved because of their parents's... rigidity... or they'd simply never had any issues with rules because they were generally docile children. The professor's accent was hard to place, but it sounded vaguely French to her, and Donella hurriedly copied down the rules from her seat beside Daniel. This probably wouldn't ever be her favorite class, not like Herbology, but she knew it was important. Her parents were overprotective and sheltering, but that didn't mean she was oblivious to the fact that dark wizards and witches were still out there, even if the magical world wasn't currently at war with itself. And we all still die, yeah, we all still die- What will you leave behind, oh, we all still die... Marching away from the stream; This tree, it will die without leaves. This tree, it will die, this tree, it will die. And we all still die, yeah, we all still die- What will you leave behind, oh, we all still die...

When everything turns to black, You don't know where to go... You need something to justify your soul. Silence is broken, confidence is gone; Everything you're holding onto falls. FA N C H O N M A R I E C O H E N Professor of DADA │ Muggleborn │ Haitian
Fanchon nodded briefly at the dark-haired Hufflepuff girl, who, from her inflection, seemed to know her share of French. "Tres bien. 10 points to Hufflepuff. The Dark Arts, les arts sombres, atizay yo nwa," she continued, rattling off their respective translations in French and Creole, "Is any sort of magic used for ill-intent. This covers a very broad range of things. To cast a curse on someone else is practicing the dark arts. So is brewing a potion intended to harm or poison. So is breeding dark creatures for the purpose of using them to terrorize others. British magical law outlaws certain curses, but others are perfectly acceptable, even if they can be just as deadly. For example, you and a housemate get into a nasty spat, you lose your temper, and send a jinx or hex their way. Congratulations, you have officially practiced dark magic. Does that make you a dark witch or wizard?"
The woman quirked a small smile. "Of course not. It makes you an idiot for relying on a flick of your wand to sort out your problems, not to mention rather lazy. It doesn't take any sort of genius or cunning to hex someone, just as it doesn't take a criminal mastermind to throw a punch. However. Consistent and malicious use of dark magic corrupts slowly and deviously. A reliance on it is as harmful as many muggle drug or potion. You will come into contact with the dark arts at some point in your lives, and do not think for a second you are too clever or too courageous or too loyal or too shrewd to resist it. We cannot destroy dark magic anymore than we could light magic intended to help and protect." She regarded the students evenly, folding her arms across her chest.
"And let me be clear that dark does not necessarily equate to evil. Nearly any spell can be used in any manner, but there are certain spells that were created specifically to manipulate, kill, torture, and maim, and there are reasons we consider them unforgivable. Therefore, you need to know how to protect yourself, preferably without getting yourself or anyone else killed. There are plenty of useful dark spells that can help you out in a time of need, and we will be learning the first of those, a jinx, soon enough. My intent isn't to terrify you, but you do need to be aware of the world around you. You are extraordinarily lucky to be born into a for the most part, peaceful time, in a peaceful place. Less than fifty years ago, perhaps when your grandparents were children, that was not the case. That may not always be the case for you, or your children, or the generations after. Which is why this class is one of the most crucial. Barring any questions, you are all dismissed." Fanchon waited for the tell-tale scrape of chairs and rustle of papers and bags before taking her seat again at her desk, Jacques perched nearby, purring throatily. All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. All the rules are changing now; you're living in sin... Everything around you is caving in; all you're holding onto- Is slipping like water through your hands.

Andy had walked in a few moments after the class conversation had begun. Curse those moving stairs! Quickly and quietly, they snuck into an empty seat and folded their hands in their lap.
'Dark Arts..?' Andy's throat was dry, and their eyes were wide. Honestly, such a thought terrified them. They were completely unused to magic as it was, and now they had to learn how to fend off the most horrific things imaginable.. At least as far as Andy's overactive imagination was concerned. Their hands and knees fidgeted for the entire lesson, and they took deep breaths to try and calm their racing heart. 'Just don't think about it,' they told themself. 'I'm sure it will all be okay.. They wouldn't let us really get hurt.. But still...' They grimaced. Andy really hoped they wouldn't ever have to see anything really scary... They had a feeling nightmares were headed their way. When they were dismissed, Andy sighed and slowly stood up, making their way over to the professor and ducking their head slightly.
"Professor, My name is Andy O'Farrell.. I'm sorry I was late for class. I seem to always be getting lost.. Anyway, I will try not to let it happen again..."

When everything turns to black, You don't know where to go... You need something to justify your soul. Silence is broken, confidence is gone; Everything you're holding onto falls. FA N C H O N M A R I E C O H E N Professor of DADA │ Muggleborn │ Haitian Fanchon almost languished at her desk, looking vaguely irked as the students came in and took their seats. Finally, with a small sigh, she stood up, stretched a little, and wand in hand, began her pacing up and down the rows of desks and chairs, careful not to trip over anyone's bag. "You're all in luck, as today we'll be learning one of the most simple- and essential- spells known to wizards. Some of you may already be familiar with this, as it's not unusual to simply pick it up from older students as you go about your daily lives." She held her wand aloft, made sure they were all looking at it, and enunciated carefully, "LOO-mos," while moving it in a loop:
And then a sharp wave-like motion, saying, "NOCK-ss,":
The bright light extinguished itself immediately. "That," said Fanchon, "Is the wand lighting and extinguishing charm. As you can see, it's obviously very useful when you are in a dark place, or going about at night. It was not, surprisingly, invented until the year 1772, by a witch named Levina Monkstanley, who worked for the Ministry of Magic, and first used it to find a fallen quill. However, credit was almost stolen from her a German wizard name Garvin Lugner, who said he had invented the spell while developing his Instant Darkness Powder. He was lying, of course, and his powder was found to only dim a room slightly, rather than throw it into darkness."
She stowed her wand away. "Now, one of the positive side effects of the charm is that it also repels many spectral creatures, as well as any dark spirits, so it can be very useful to keep your wand lit when in a place where you may encounter anything of that nature. There's really nothing much to this- the wand movements are most important, as well as making sure your wand stays lit. It's no good if you can only keep the charm up for a few moments, so I want to see everyone's wand lit for at least five minutes. I'll set a timer." All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. All the rules are changing now; you're living in sin... Everything around you is caving in; all you're holding onto- Is slipping like water through your hands.

Andy was on time for their DADA class today, for which they were extremely grateful. Something told them that the professor would not be one to tolerate much tardiness.
They stuck a finger under their tie and loosened it a bit, their blue hazel eyes trained on the mesmerizing nature of Professor Fanchon. It seemed she had a way with getting a person's attention, even without the flash and bang that followed her spell.
When the students were instructed to line up, Andy followed suit, their wand in hand (although their palms were a bit sweaty). They were suddenly very aware of the sound of scuffling shoes, and they felt heat on the back of their neck as their chest tightened. 'No, not now,' the breathed out shakily, fanning their face to try and get a little air. It felt sweltering in here, all of a sudden. They sometimes had these anxiety episodes, usually but not always triggered by large groups of people or a lot of noise or commotion. It was no big deal... They would get over it, eventually. But it was about to get a lot louder in here... This was not going to be fun.
As soon as the dummies started charging, Andy tensed up. There came the bangs, the flashes of light, resounding into their core. "Fli... Flipendo!" Andy uttered weakly, feeling a bit light headed. A wisp of smoke fizzled out of the tip of their wand. Their face fell, and they hugged their elbows tightly. They really needed to gather themself if they were ever gonna get the spell right.. They were way too worked up..

His wand agreed and the mannikin flew back though not as well as the teachers, but that was to be expected. He felt like his wand liked to be noisy cause whenever he used it, it was louder than other wands in class. this time included, it was loud but effective. though he was worried for the boy next to him, Andy. I don't have time for dancin' That's just gonna have to wait a while Ain't got time for messin' around And it's not my style... Calliandra settled herself into a desk, watching eagerly as the professor showed them a knockback jinx. She did frown a little as the cat darted under the table, feeling bad for the poor pet, who clearly didn't appreciate all the noise. Shrugging her hair back, she stood as the professor told them to push the desks back, quickly tucking her bag under one of the desks to keep it out of the way and safe. She also took a moment to offer her hand to the cat as she ducked down to settle her bag.
She didn't have time to wait for the creature though, and she quickly got in line between a couple of other students, mentally reviewing the pronunciation of the spell and the wand movement, going so far as to trace the movement with her finger. She also watched the two students in front of her, both of whom succeeded in the spell. However, the first person, Andy as Calliandra remembered their name was (she wasn't sure if they were a boy or girl, and she didn't really care), seemed to be having a bad reaction to something going on in the room. Calliandra wasn't sure what it was, but she did try to make a mental note about the reaction. When her mother sent her journal, she would make a note of it on Andy's page. There was never any way of knowing when the information might be useful.
Calliandra let the Hufflepuff try to comfort their Ravenclaw classmate, and cast the spell herself when her turn came up. "Flipendo." Calliandra kept her voice calm, remembering how her charm had only worked after she felt more centered, and she turned all her will toward marking the mannequin move away from her. She had to admit, seeing the figure clatter back was satisfying, though the racket of the spell and the mannequin's movement was disconcerting.
As soon as she was finished, she turned to look at the Ravenclaw again, seeing that they clearly weren't feeling any better. Calliandra rolled her eyes and sighed before she moved over in front of the Ravenclaw. "Whatever is bothering you, staying there isn't going to help anything. Either get up, calm down, and cast the spell, or get dismissed from the class until you feel better. You are just going to make yourself sick doing that."Calliandra was pretty sure her voice was very sharp, but she wouldn't apologize. The sharpness might work, and if it didn't, she had tried. And I'm almost there I'm almost there People down here think I'm crazy But I don't care... OOC: Sorry Andy; Calliandra doesn't really do comforting. At least, not well. Company: First Years Location: DADA Classroom Wearing: School Robes Thinking:If Andy doesn't get used to noise and chaos, I have a feeling they are going to have an awfully hard time in this class.
