EZREAL PYNE

The sound of distant life leaked into a blacked out room through shut blinds. The room was filled with a sweltering heat that only grew as the day went on and the flicking on of a projector. It was quiet through, filled with stilled bodies that waited in silence. The sound of a clicker was little introduction to the thundering voice that followed, filling the room with noise and life amidst the heat. "Thank you all for coming to such a short notice briefing. With new details on our fourth quarter, it seems we'll be having to change some things. It seems sales have been decreasing, thus some of our goals are not being met. To fix that we will be changing customer service, our online sites, and several branches." There was a pause as the speaker cleared their throat and changed the projected screen to picture a city. "Now with that being stated I will be transferring later this week to a different location while their head will be coming here," He paused as the sounds of upset groans began to rise. "Now I understand this is quite sudden but it is for the best. I've been here for almost ten years now and while I do believe we have all grown as a community I have been requested to change branches. These changes will be happening immediately so I ask you all to please try to bear with all the changes as there are smaller changes going to be happening as well. After the meeting is over and we have talked about the new things to come you are all welcome to join me after work for a going away party."

There were murmurs of unhappiness but the briefing went on for a remaining hour or two before ending cleanly. As the room emptied only Ezreal was left in the hot room. It was a hot day in Europe and especially humid from summer rain. He sighed as he leaned back in his chair. Ten years. It had come and went in the blink of an eye, while he was only a CEO for ten he remember the earlier days in college being filled with nothing but typing and logging data. The time had come and gone in the blink of an eye and before he knew it he was off to somewhere else. How long had it been since he left the country? Almost twenty years now? It never ceased to amaze him how old he was getting. He had come the heart of Europe's life, France, after high school and had never looked back. All because of luck. He chuckled at the memory as he rested his chin in his hand. He was somewhat excited to head to his new location. It was close to his hometown and not only that but a branch that existed in that very city. It meant he could see his mother once more after so long and not only that but be back in his home. While he made Europe quite the homestead it had never felt permanent but then again nothing felt all to permanent to Ezreal which was one quality people often thought was quite positive about him. Ezreal grabbed his cup of iced coffee and stood up, he should head out and get the rest of his things packed up and ready to go for the big move in a few days. He opened the blinds to the room and smiled out at the beautiful scene that lay outside. He was going to miss this sight. Ezreal took in one last time before turning away and walking to his office.

                                            ---

Time passed fast and before he knew it, Ezreal was on a plane leaving towards his childhood home. He was leaving everything he knew for so long behind once again. Maybe it was to be a pattern for him. Packing up and leaving his new dwelling after a while, destined to roam the earth. The idea seemed realistic enough Ezreal almost believed it for a second. The ravenette reclined in his seat and he sipped his wine, he was in coach of course. While he the money for a private jet he had never traveled enough to bother getting one. Coach flight was good enough the one or two times he had traveled. He had always thought he'd travel more when he was younger but in truth half the time he was at work sitting at his desk just doing paperwork or emailing the board on the latest goal accomplishment. It was boring at times but he did get invited to quite the events in return. From shows to even parties thrown by the wealthy he helped market to, he was undeniably happy with his position and its benefits. Ezreal downed the glass as he waved for the stewardess to pour him a new glass. The small thing was quite happy to do so and was quick to fill him up before asking if he needed anything else. He shook his head and waved her away. The stewardess looked almost hurt by the gesture but went upon her way. He could hear he whispering and giggling with a fellow stewardess in the back. They were acting as if they had never seen a man before by how hopeful and how lustful they glanced at him. He rolled his eyes and sipped away at his wine. He was looking forward to landing and being able to get set up in his new home.

Thankfully the trip wasn't too much longer and as they landed he gathered his luggage. He was undeniably excited. More so then he thought he would be. He carried his luggage to the escorting car waiting for him and allowed the driver to load up the vehicle as he got in. He felt his stomach growl in hunger as he got comfortable. He'd need to find something to eat soon. The driver settled in the car and they were off to his hotel. It was some fancy hotel that the company had been able to pull some strings for him to get one of the nicest rooms. The drive was only a few minutes and before he had time to go over his check information he was already there. His things were unloaded as he walked into the fancy marble-floored hotel. "Ezreal Pyne." The desk clerk checked him and gave him the keys to his room before informing him of all the things the residency had available to him and confirming his things would be delivered to his room. With everything settled he made his way out of the hotel, tucking the keys into his pockets he asked the driver to take him to a car dealership. If he was to stay here for any length of time he would need a car, no getting around having one. He had some time and money to blow so he might as well, even if the hunger was eating his stomach away.

The dealership was quite helpful in his search for a nice luxury car. He ended up finding an Audi that suited his needs and before the dealers could even blink he handed them the money, signed the papers, and drove off in his new car. He was happy to have his freedom back when it came to driving and quickly found his way on the road heading towards his hometown. He planned on surprising his mother with a visit after he grabbed something to eat. Maybe he'd go to that dinner him and his friends used to always go to when they were young. Maybe he'd even run into a familiar face or two, though he doubted it.

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me

The night was still cooling off from the smoldering summer day, it had dropped down to a comfortable sixty degrees, just cool enough to wear a jacket without anyone noticing. The bark from the old oak tree scratched at his back as he leaned against it, avoiding the street lights at all cost as he waited for the guy to show up. When he slid his cell phone from his pocket, the bright screen glared up at him. Four AM. It was still too early for anyone to be awake yet, and the town was far enough from the city that the cops wouldn’t patrol it regularly. Despite those comforts, there was always that dreaded fear in the back of his mind. He had been doing this for years now, it had become a regular thing since he had gotten out of college. It was something he did on the side, something extra to make ends meet a bit better. He was experienced to say the least by now. But no matter how many times he did this that voice was still in the back of his mind. Your luck will run out someday. It whispered to him, making him shift his body weight from foot to foot. He tried to ignore it the best he could, reminding himself that this was routine by now. He hadn’t done anything different today, it was the same as the years before.
He woke up around three-thirty AM. He took a quick shower, drank some coffee to wake his senses up, put on his extra-large jacket to help conceal his goods, and then he walked his way to the park near his place where he leaned against the same old oak tree every night for the past ten years. There was nothing he had done differently, nothing that might have caused him to be noticed, nothing that might have changed the course of the future. Everything was as it should be and he reminded himself that over and over until the slick black car came cruising down the street. The headlights were turned off, making it almost impossible to view. But Landon knew what to look for. He stepped out from the oak tree towards the street, still avoiding the lights. The car slowed to a crawl before stopping in front of him. He opened the door and climbed into the passenger seat.
“How you doin, Donnie?” the guy, who he knew as Roy, greeted him.
“I’m good, taking it day by day you know?” He replied, knowing that Roy wasn’t truly interested in his life.
“Good, good.” Roy nodded his head, before he passed a brown bag to him. “Here is your goods for the day, man.”
Landon peeked inside the bag, making sure that it was the same amount as it always was. He wasn’t about to be ripped off. “Nice, thanks Roy.” He passed a roll of cash over to the other and watched as he counted it out to make sure it was all there.
Roy gave him a grin. “Have a good one, Donnie. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”
He stuffed the brown bag into the inside pocket of his jacket before he exited the car. Only after it drove off did he start walking his way back to his house. It would be at least a few hours before his regulars would be ready to pick up from him.

By the afternoon, Landon returned to the small house he rented as his own with almost a thousand dollars in his pocket. Business was booming for him recently to the point that he managed to pay off some of his college debt. Of course, he had to be careful, with all the money he was making he had to use it discreetly to make sure that no one questioned where he got it from. Once home, he collapsed on the small living room couch he bought from a garage sale, feeling exhausted from running around all day meeting up with his regulars and trying to avoid the police at the same time. He did have a regular job though, he worked at a dry cleaners in the city but it paid so little that he had to find other ways to make cash. Right now, he was just trying to get by in life. After college, his career had been less than successful as an artist. All his dreams of being famous quickly flew out the window after he barely managed to sell one painting. It was so discouraging to the point he had all but given up, sometimes he found business in design logos for small companies around town but other than that he didn’t do much of anything with his degree. He only moved when he heard a meow next to the couch. Brown eyes peeked open to look down at his orange tabby cat rubbing her body against the couch. She stared up at him with bright blue eyes, letting out another soft meow.
Landon glanced at the old grandfather clock in the corner, something he inherited from his parents. “Oh, dinner time already?” The cat replied with another meow and he stood up. “Okay, okay, Ginger. I’m going.” He wandered his way into his run-down kitchen to pour Ginger her dinner, which was generic cat food. He did his best to spoil her but sometimes he barely had enough to feed himself, let alone his cat. She never seemed to mind, always eating the kibble right up.
He watched her as she ate, his own hunger getting to him. “You know, maybe I should make myself something as well.” But when he opened his cabinets he found most of his food was already expired. He sighed. “Definitely time for a shopping trip.” If he didn’t have any food at home, that meant he would have to go out to eat for dinner. He pulled out his wallet, biting at his bottom lip as he did the math in his head. His rent was due at the end of the week and if he needed to buy groceries then he shouldn’t be spending money going out. But he knew that if he went to the usual place, he could manage to get some sort of discount as a regular. “Okay, Ginger, be good. I’ll be back.” He gave the tabby a small pat on the head before he headed out of his house.
When he got to the diner from his high school days, he did his best to rub away any nostalgia that he felt. Most of the people he had grown up with had already moved up to the city with successful jobs or went out of state to start families. Landon was stuck where he was, he knew that and he did his best not to let that upset him. Instead he kept his head up as he walked into the diner, greeting the waitresses that immediately recognized him before he took a seat at his usual booth towards the back of the place.

Now, this was nice. Driving here was less of a pain then it was in Europe. Ezreal relished at how easy it was too, for once, actually not have to worry about random moped bikes finding their way in front of his car. He could definitely get used to the drive from Cresent city to here. It wasn't far maybe ten minutes at best and with his mother so close now he could make up for the time he was more than just absent. He turned into a parking spot in front of the dinner, he had gotten quite the talent for parallel parking while away. It was easier to park in the streets then go and hope for a parking lot. He fished around in the abyss of his pocket to find change for the coin meter. Damn. He only had bills and with that quite a few large bills. Ezreal let out a sigh, he'd need to remember to smaller bills if he was planning on going to mom and pop places. He stepped out of the Audi and looked at the meter. It was thankfully one of the new types of meters that accepted cards. While he wasn't the type to actually trust it he had no other option than to do so. Pay it or get his car locked and taken away. He opened his wallet and slid his card in, punching the amount of time he wanted he stood there tapping his foot as, waiting for the card to be accepted by the slow machine. With a ding, he took the card out and tucked his wallet away. He wondered, would anyone recognize him? Would he recognize anyone either? It was something that ran in and out of his mind the entire time he was driving here, aside from the fact that food was quickly becoming higher up on his list of priorities as of now. He wondered that with how much time was going on would his friends remember him? Probably not. It had been years since he even talked to his best friend, and while it was a hard pill to swallow he was most likely a distant whisper on the wind to people.

It was depressing but true, people had most likely changed in the years of his absence and so their friendship was on more unstable grounds. Ezreal shrugged off the thoughts though, he didn't need to go about thinking of such depressing things when he has every second of his life to be spending doing others. He walked into the dinner and greeted the waitresses. They seemed hardly familiar and with the small view of the back none of the cooks seemed recognizable. Whatever the case he was going to just enjoy being in the small diner with so many of his memories. He scanned the seats, maybe he should look to see if the booth the guys had always sat at was empty. It took a moment of racking his brain to remember it clearly. It was in the back, with enough privacy the boys could get into trouble but with enough view, they could check out passing people. Ezreal chuckled softly at the memory and stepped to the side. If he was lucky it would be empty if not he could always take up the table behind it. As his eyes scanned the booths all the way to the back his feet carried his halfway, stopping when he saw a tuff of blond hair.

Just too late. He felt a small part of his heart drop as he settled into the booth next to it. He was curious on who was sitting there, maybe it was some random stranger but how could he know if he never looked. He felt his eyes roam to the next table, staring at the person he couldn't make out much of their features and so he quickly averted his eyes as he heard the clicking of shoes behind him. "Hi! Welcome hun! I'll be your server if you need anything give me a holler but for now, what can I start you off with?" The waitress placed a menu down next to him along with a glass of water and a napkin full of utensils. It was yet another time to think about what he used to like getting here. It was a set of fries with one of their chocolate milkshakes that he used to always have them crumble a cookie in from the back for him. What else? A burger, he couldn't remember the type but it was medium rare that's for sure. "Yeah, I guess I'll have a burger with fries and a chocolate milkshake and with the shake can you crumble a cookie on top or into it?" The waitress had meanwhile taken out her pad of paper and gone scribbling down his order, she paused slightly at the request of a cookie before continuing. "Well, no promises on the cookie but I'll see what we got dear. If we ain't got any would a brownie work?" Ezreal nodded and the lady was off. He sank back into his booth and pulled out his phone. So much for running into someone he knew. He might as well take the chance to call his mother. Ask her what her address was to send her something, play it off as if he wasn't back in town. He scrolled through his contacts and stopped once he got to mother. The dial was short and quick as she answered almost immediately. "Hey mom. Was wondering if you were still on the Cherrylane address still. Want to send you some wine and some other goods." He laughed as his mother went on about other things such as clothing and if he would send her out on a private jet to come see him. "Well I plan on coming home in the next year after I finish my quarter with the company and have finished talking to the board about my transfer." He paused and took the phone away from his mouth as the milkshake was delivered. Ghosting a thank you, nodding towards the waitress as she left.

"No mom, I can't do that. I've only got so many sick days stocked up. I told you I was going to save them all for as long as I could without losing them and then take you all around the area during fashion week." Ezreal took a sip of his chocolate delight, god he ate horribly when he was younger. Sure he ate burger occasionally but not much anymore. "Ok mom. I'll call you tomorrow. Thanks, love you too." WIth that the call was over and he had her address. She had only really ever moved once since he left but it was still a house that ran in his family. His grandmother lived in the house three houses down. He remembered the nights when him and his pals used to sneak out of his mother's house only to have to avoid his grandmother who stayed up way too late for her age. Those were the good days. His phone went live once more with a new email and he was quick to respond. Typing as he sipped on his cookie crumbled shake. Unfortunately, he didn't have his computer with al his charts and files on it to send with the email so all he could do was tell his coworker that he'd send over everything later that day. With newfound silence, Ezreal felt his eyes wander over to the next booth all the while hoping that the person sitting in the booth wouldn't notice him looking. Still, nothing he recognized but this time he could see small features such as their nose. Sighing he shifted and fiddle with his phone. Going through emails and making sure he stayed up to date on the new changes being made by other branches.

The booth creaked underneath his weight as sat down, it was clearly old and outdated. But he couldn’t help but hope that this place never got renovated. It had been a second home to him over the years, a place where he could always relive some of his best memories and still have the chance to make new ones. He always sat in this booth, it had been the same one that him and his friends had taken in their teenage years. It had the perfect view of the diner but still was far enough that they could make trouble without getting into trouble. He sat exactly in the same spot that he had when he was younger, only this time it was just him in the booth instead of being crowded with a group of boys yelling at each other. He felt comfortable though, surrounded by the ghosts of his friends. He missed those days when his worries were slim to none.
“Hey there, Landon. How have you been, honey?” one of the older waitresses asked him.
He shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve been getting by, Anne. Anything new with you? How your kids?”
“Being troublemakers as always. Last week, Sam got suspended for getting into a fight at school. Can you believe that? My Sam, in a fight!” She shook her head in disbelief. “Of course, being suspended is the least of his problems once I got my hands on him. That boy is grounded until he gets married, I swear. I also have him cleaning the house head to toe.
Landon chuckled. “Ah, go easy on him. He’s a kid, he’ll grow out of it someday. I know I did.”
Anne shook her head again, as if she didn’t believe that was possible. “Anyway, what can I get for you? The usual?”
“You know it,” he responded with a grin. He always got the same the same thing every time he came here. A well-done burger with extra pickles, no mustard with a basket of fries and a vanilla milkshake. It was what he had ordered in his teen years and although he should not be eating that much greasy food now he still did anyway. He watched as Anne scribbled it down on her notepad before she walked off towards the kitchen.
The leather squeaked underneath his weight as he leaned back in the booth. He pulled out his phone for no reason other than to occupy his hands. He didn’t talk too much to anyone besides his regulars and Roy. That was his basic human contact. His older sister, Laura bugged him at least once a week though. She was constantly worried about him since their parents had passed away, thinking it was her duty to become their mom and never leave him alone. She knew that some of the business he did was shady but she didn’t know what it was exactly and he was thankful for that. If she knew he had grown up to become a dealer, she would drive all the way down from up-state just to strangle him. But when his brown eyes scanned through his messages now, he saw no new ones from her.

When he heard the diner door swing open, he glanced up for a moment to see the new costumer that had entered. He stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of the diner. Landon didn’t doubt that his clothes alone were more than at least three months of his own rent. What was someone like that doing here in this small town? Shouldn’t he be up in the city or something? It made the blond feel insecure in his ripped jeans and old t-shirt. He averted his eyes, looking out the window beside him instead. But of course, Mr. Fancy Pants would decide to take a seat at the booth next to his. Oh well, it was a public area and technically anyone could sit wherever they wanted too.
Anne came by for a second to drop off his vanilla milkshake before she went to take the stranger’s order. Despite his best attempt at ignoring, he found his ears perking up anyway. Something about the other’s voice seemed familiar, it was like from a distant memory. Not only that but the order struck a bigger cord with Landon. A crumbled cookie in a chocolate milkshake? He knew that order. There was only one person he ever saw order that before. He stole a glance at the stranger, taking in the dark hair, trying to find any other similarities that matched. It couldn’t be possible, could it? The blond turned his attention to his milkshake, taking a few sips as the stranger made a phone call. He strained his ears to pick up every word he could to find anything that could confirm his suspicions. Cherrylane. He knew that road. He walked down that road on his way home every single day. That was the same road that his childhood home was on. But more importantly, that was where his best friend had lived as well.
Landon felt like the wind had been knocked out of him for a moment as flashbacks of memories came to him. Sneaking out of his friend’s house, having to avoid his grandmother who never slept. He remembered when they were very little, he swore that she had been a vampire. The few times they had been caught and had been grounded for weeks only to continue to try and sneak out anyway. Cherrylane held so many memories for him. It was also the last place he saw his best friend before he flew out of the country and his life for forever.
Or at least he thought it was for forever.
The blond turned now to the stranger in the booth. He pushed his hair from his brown eyes. The more he looked at him, the more he could swear it was him. He lifted his hand, hesitating at first, before he pushed himself forward. He reached out to tap the table next to his. “Excuse me,” he spoke. “Are you Ezreal Pyne?”

The diner smelt divine, the scent of meat was close and Ezreal could hardly wait to dig in, he hadn't eaten in what felt like hours since he got off the plane and just seeing the food being placed in front of him made his mouth water. He was almost finished with his shake due to pure need to fill his stomach with something other then air. The first bite of burger was the thing of pure memories. It brought him back to the first time he ever ate here with his best friend, it tasted the same as he remembered. He took another bite and placed his burger down to wipe his fingers. God it was messy but he hadn't had good messy food in forever. He was used to neat fancy food served by snobby waiters at an overpriced restaurant in the middle of some fancy square. After cleaning his fingers he was now able to slow down on eating. The portions here were quite bigger than he had gotten used to and he knew eating the whole meal itself was going to be quite a task. Leftovers were always good though, especially when he didn't want to go out for dinner. He grabbed the bottle of ketchup and squirted some on the side of his fries before digging in. They were good but what else should he expect. He leaned back in his seat, while the food was to die for something felt off about it. Maybe it was the fact he was eating alone or maybe it was the fact that no one he enjoyed the food with was here. It was another kick in the stomach that everyone he knew was off in their own world while he was hoping to crash into old memories. Whatever the case he could still relish in the moment, at least for today.

He stuffed another fry in his face before his peripheral view caught something. There was the movement of a hand as it knocked on his table. Following the hand upwards he made eye contact with the human it belonged to, the person in the booth next to him. They asked a simple question and all Ezreal could do was stare. Nodding slowly, confused on who he was talking to. The person, now in full view, looked so familiar. He knew them, didn't he? From where though. Ezreal quickly went through everything he could remember going through new and old friends before stopping on one person who it must've been. "Landon..?" It was almost hard to even say his name. His best friend. "Holy s**t Landon is that you?" Was it weird for him to get emotional? Definitely. Was he trying not to be? Of course. Seeing those brown eyes brought back a lot of memories. To many that it was almost too overwhelming for him.

                                                  Landon Noel.

His best friend since he could even remember having a best friend. Ezreal almost had issues believing he was seeing the blond. How long had it been? How much time had passed since he even messaged his friend? "Mind if I sit with you?" Part of him needed this. Needed to catch up with Landon in their booth. Needed to see how the male was spending his life. He took another sip of his milkshake as if to help wash down the shock and growing excitement he felt as he waited for his response.

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep

The shock of the situation was enough that if he hadn’t been sitting down already, the blond would’ve been knocked right off his feet. How was this possible? Ezreal wasn’t supposed to be here. He never thought that he would ever be here again. He had left on a scholarship to Europe. There should’ve been an entire ocean sitting between the two and yet there were only a couple feet now. What were the odds of his best friend being Mr. Fancy Pants? The blond felt a grin crawl across his face as his old best friend recognized him. He nodded to confirm his question, unable to find the words to speak right away.
“Yeah, yeah, of course,” he managed to answer. Here he had thought that he would be spending another evening in the old diner eating by himself. But now he the best company that he could ever think of having. Landon shook his head in disbelief as the other took his seat across from him. “I can’t believe you’re here. I mean, last time we spoke years ago, you were in Europe.”
The two had lost communication years back for what the blond had thought to be the last time. For a while he had felt guilty about it, wanting to try to reach back out to his friend. But it had been around that time that he had started to engage in shady business transactions and he thought that the less people he spoke to the better it would be for everyone. If something happened to him, whether it be him getting shot over a bad deal or him winding up in jail, the less people that knew about it, the better he would’ve felt. He never wanted anyone to worry about him unnecessarily. That’s why he had always tried his best to hide it from his sister whenever she came to visit. But that was why he thought it be best to cut ties with Ezreal for good. He had been doing so much better in life than Landon had been. He was in Europe, making money and living it up. He didn’t want to hold him back in life.
“How have you been though?” he asked with a rush of excitement. He wanted to know how his best friend had been holding up the past few years. But the looks of it, probably much better than he was. “What are you doing back in town? It isn’t a holiday or anything.”

And it's been years, I miss my home
There's a fire burning in my bones
But I still believe

As soon as an answer came out of Landon's mouth Ezreal was already working on getting himself situated. Grabbing his plate and milkshake he quickly made himself situated across from Landon. Ezreal nodded in agreement to his statement. It had been years. Years since he even looked at his emails the two exchanged and even more years since they lost connection and he even thought about it. So much had changed in those years and he wanted to make up for the lost time, even if all he could do was listen to Landon's life up til now. He had gotten so out of the loop from his childhood best friend that it was hard to say if he even knew what all they talked about when they last talked.
"Yeah. I've been in Europe all until today. I got transferred to new headquarters by the board. So starting today I'm no longer living in Europe. Exciting right?" He chuckled a bit. "I start back at work tomorrow so I'm spending my day off to the fullest. Was planning to visit mom once I finished up here." He took up a new fry into his mouth. It had been so long and Ezreal felt so guilty. He had always thought of messaging Landon, but never actually made those thoughts a reality. He never tried to make time. He was, at the time of their last email, trying to just get by with the company. Working as a secretary, a job which he hated more than anything, he had felt like quitting. So much had changed and yet here they were.

"I've been good though. I can't really complain, I don't hate my job and I can at least take care of mom now that I'm closer." It had always been a little rough for his mother. She was only a high school graduate, making him one of the few in his family to have gone to college and finished. It was a struggle in his younger years but he had fun. She had a brilliant mind with no passion for more schooling, a wasted talent in his mind, but she kept a roof over their heads and food on their table. While he didn't talk much to his mother due to the time difference and his schedule he would always send a small bit of money for her to splurge and make sure she had enough for bills and what not. It was one of his goals to pay off both the houses completely, besides also getting her a car. "But enough about me. How've you been? How has the whole art thing been going? I mean when am going to be waiting in line to get tickets for the Landon Noel exhibit?" He was so excited to hear the other's own life up till now. He knew that art school had gone well for him but their connection stopped soon after and he never knew how far Landon had gotten. All he could think about was getting a painting done by him, a promise he had made to himself way back while in college.

"Do you still talk to anyone? I haven't heard anything from anyone here at home for so long." He took a bite of his burger after asking his question. He missed everyone so much. He rarely had time to talk to his mother and Landon was the only person he talked to after college. Everyone else sort of disappeared from his life but so did he. Being an ocean apart did that to relationships. It was straining trying to keep up on classes, learn how to survive in a foreign city, and keep contact with people but he definitely could have put more effort in it. For their sake at least. He took another bite of the burger before wiping his hands and his mouth and taking a sip of his shake. He'd have to order another one of these shakes before he headed to his mother's house. Maybe even bring her something to eat too while he was out. He'd need to stop at a store and get some nice liquor for her anyway, maybe he'd get one for himself too.

After all these years, his childhood best friend had finally returned. It was unreal for him to comprehend. The years they had spent apart had felt dragged on and on and now, after coming to terms with the realization that Ezreal would no longer be a part of his life, did he suddenly show up out of the blue. It was enough to make Landon forget all about the food that sat in front of him, only when the other began to eat did he realize he should as well. He wasn’t supposed to be spending the money anyway, so he had to make sure he at least ate the food. Maybe he could save some of it as leftovers, that way he wouldn’t have to worry about shopping until at least tomorrow afternoon. “I’m sure she’ll be thrilled to see you,” he commented, knowing for a fact that his mother would lose it once she saw him.
When Ezreal first left, Landon had tried to stay in contact with his mother to help her out. He would end up cutting her grass or helping with groceries, the sort of things Ezreal would’ve done if he had been there. Even after college the blond would stop in to check on her to see how she was here and there. It wasn’t until he stopped having any contact with the other did he also stop seeing his mother. Now, he preferred to avoid the house completely just in case she would be outside one day and saw him. Not just because it was awkward, but also because she had been another person he didn’t want to entangle in his messy life. He wondered if that would change now though, if anything would truly change now that his friend had transferred back. It had been so long, and even though they were both excited to see one another, could they keep up with their friendship after all these years? Was it still possible?
Landon paused with a fry halfway to his mouth when the questions had been turned on him. Of course, he didn’t know how unsuccessful he had been as a painter. The two had lost connection before the blond had to face the harsh reality of the situation, being an artist was not a wealthy career choice. Now he would have to face the embarrassment of having to explain that to his extremely successful friend. Or did he? After a long sip of his milkshake he came up with a good enough reply. ”Truth be told, becoming a famous painter is exactly the easiest job on the market. But I’m still working on it,” he lied, or maybe it wasn’t a lie. He did still paint here and there, it was a passion he hadn’t fully given up on. “I haven’t made it as big as I wanted to, but I still sell a few paintings here and there. Besides that, I also do some graphic design work for local companies. You know, making logos, designing t-shirts, that kind of thing. It’s a good way to make ends meet.” It still wasn’t a full lie, but what could Landon do? He wasn’t about to admit to his childhood best friend that he had grown up to be a failure artist who then became a drug dealer. He’d rather die than go through that embarrassment. ”But hey, I’m not a quitter. Someday, I’ll have my own exhibit, and then I’ll even let you in for free.” he joked with a grin.
“Well, after high school everybody mostly moved away. Some of them live up in the city now though. Maybe you’ll get the chance to run into anyone sometime.” He never ran into anyone, he made it a habit to avoid places where people could recognize him when he went to the city. That’s where the major drug dealers were and Landon didn’t want anything to do with them. He would take the bus up there, go to work for a good seven hours, and take the bus home. “I mean, it’s not that much of a surprise. When we were younger everyone always talked about getting out of here, remember?”

Ezreal nodded, he was glad that he wasn't the only one who thught his mother might enjoy the surprise. He took a few more bite of food as Landon went on to speak of his art career. It was good to know that he was having an easy time, weird but good. He was always told by some of the designers how their fame came slow but in an instant. While it may be true for them if Landon was making his mark in the world then he'd be more then happy for him. The whole talk of artistry reminded him of is own problems. He needed to start getting a team together to gut and redesign the website for the company. If Landon was good then maybe Ezreal could..? Ezreal finished the bite in his mouth and wiped his hands once more before reaching into his suit pants and pulling out his wallet. He had a business card in here somewhere. "Well I'm glad you're having an easy time. I've heard quite some sob stories on how hard it was for others. I'd be interested in seeing some of your new pieces but I was wondering," Ezreal paused and cleared his throat. "I was wondering if by chance you'd be interested in being apart of my team. Due to how our sales quarter just went I'm having to redesign our website and a list of other things. If I could see your pieces and if the other CEO has no issue with your work maybe we could strike an agreement and get you a position in the team. It'd be under my lead and it'd pay well enough. Would you be interested? I need to start looking tomorrow for others so there would be competition. There's no need to decide now of course. Sleep on it and let me know in a week that way I can start compiling a list of people for the position." He placed his card next to Landon's plate before folding his wallet up and shoving it into his pocket.

"I know it's sudden and that this is the first contact after so long but it's worth asking. Even if you decide to say no that'd be ok." He smiled and took a sip of his milkshake. He knew it wasn't the best or smartest business plan but it was a starting point in which he needed to take. He'd have to anyway tomorrow. Though here he was again, going back to business. Damn. He'd spent so much time with other business leaders and all their constant talk of business now all he could talk about was business. He chuckled at the vicious circle. "Look at me talking about work. Sorry about that. But I'm really surprised so many of us got out. It all just seemed like talk for so long and then it just happened. I hope I do run into someone in the city though. It'd be nice to see some more familiar faces." He felt a tab bit awkward for having asked a business request while just hanging out but he did his best to avert his attention from the fact. He felt his phone rumble slightly in his pocket and took it out, peaking off to the side he looked at the new notification. It was a new email from the other CEO on her office or so he assumed from the heading of 'Office details'. He'd have to email he back later with the specifics of his old location. It was nice of her though to send the email, even if it wouldn't help with transitioning into the new place too much. He tucked the phone back into his pocket and finished eating a few more fries. He was stuffed. He had only had a few mites of his burger and with just less than half of it left and a handful of fries he was full. His appetite had shrunk or his body wasn't wanting much because of the plane ride here.

He pushed the plate to the side a bit and pulled his shake closer to him. He was full but he definitely had room for the rest of his shake which wasn't much. "You know any good wine places in town? I forgot to buy mom some back in Europe so I need to make a run and get some before I go to see her." Having been gone for so long he forgot where and if there were any places that had good liquor nearby. So it made sense to ask Landon on places he thought were good.

It felt like the world had slowed to crawl when the business card had been set in front of him. A real business opportunity. A chance to show his skills of to the higher up people. If he took this chance there was no telling what could come of it. More people might want his work done for them, even if he it started as graphic design, he could slide in some of his paintings eventually. This could lead to his fame and fortune, it could lead to finally having his own exhibit in the city. His brown eyes didn’t leave the card for a long moment as he continued to stuff his face with fries. The pay was well enough Ezreal had said. He was willing to bet that that meant that he much more than he was making currently. So much, maybe he could afford to buy Ginger the expensive kind of cat kibble. Maybe even some toys for her to play with instead of just his shoe laces. Landon fought a smile at that imagine, Ginger finally be spoiled like the princess she always had been to him. It was enough to almost make him say yes.
But that dreaded voice snuck up on him. What about your other job? It hissed at him. He had a feeling Roy wouldn’t be too pleased if he suddenly pulled out and stopped selling cold turkey. He knew there wasn’t a lot of dealers out here and whoever worked above Roy wasn’t going to happy to hear they lost a connection. Maybe he could just start selling less now, he could cut back on his number of clients. That seemed more reasonable. The blond picked up the business card now, taking out his wallet to slide it in. “I will definitely think about it,” he told the other, giving him a grin. “I have to say I haven’t gotten such a good opportunity in a while so you might just have your first team member.”
The excitement was beginning to set in for a him the more he thought about it, making him want to head home right away and start up on putting a profile together to show to Ezreal and any other CEOs that might be interested. He was sure that he could get this job, he had the talent for it. The excitement was enough to also cut off his appetite which was okay with him. He had eaten a good half of his burger by now and majority of his fries, it was just enough for him to save to eat until his next shopping trip.
“Yeah, there’s a new winery that opened down the street from here.” Though it was slow business he had to say since most people who drank wine were only suburb moms or people from the city. Whenever he drank he usually went to the cheap liquor store and got whatever he could find for less than twenty dollars, sometimes ten.
Landon waved over to Anne who walked over from the counter. “Can we have two boxes, please? The checks too.” He asked her with a smile.
She nodded. “Sure thing, boys.”
Once she walked away, he turned back to Ezreal. “I have to say I never thought I would see you in town again. I thought that you’d stay in Europe for the rest of both our lives.” He chuckled. “But I’m glad that you’re back and you’re here to stay because we have a lot of catching up to do. And I do intend to catch up with you, so don’t think you can just run off on me again,” he teased lightly, he never held a grudge against Ezreal for living.

There was nothing more Ezreal could ask, he was happy that Landon was at least going to consider his offer and think about it. "Perfect. The address needs to be updated but the email and phone number are the same. Call me or email me anytime you want to talk or need anything. I should have more information on the positions and what they entitle tomorrow." Ezreal smiled and finished his shake off. "I hope so. It'd a be a breath of fresh air to have someone I'm familiar with in it." Putting the glass to the side he took out his phone and opened it up if there was a good liquor store nearby he'd need to get on it soon before they got too busy. He wanted to get to his mother's house while there was daytime left, not only that but he'd have to leave early enough as is and sleep the rest of his jet lag off and get ready for work. His internal clock was most likely going to be messed up as is, so staying up late today wasn't going to be in his favor any more than it already was. Putting his phone down he ran a hand through his hair. He didn't want to seem rude or uninterested to Landon because he was looking at his phone. His ears perked up when he heard of a nearby winery.

"Really? I'll check it out. I might pick up a bottle myself if I like it. Have you been there before?" He was curious if Landon had any favorites or opinions on the winery. It was always good, he found, if someone knew something about the place and even better if they had opinions or suggestions on the items. Blue eyes gazed to the side as he watched the waitress come to their booth. She was quick to disappear as Landon requested boxes and the checks. He nodded in agreement to Landon's statement "I thought I was going to be stuck in Europe for life too. Though I have to say I'm happy to be back. I missed this place. Even if it doesn't have escargot." Ezreal chuckled at the joke. He watched as the waitress came back into view holding boxes and two slips of paper. "Here you go. Two boxes and the bills." Kaine took his wallet out and handed her a fifty. "You can keep the change as a tip." The waitress nodded and turned away towards the register.

"Thanks for eating with me Landon and don't worry I wouldn't dream of leaving again." He grabbed one of the boxes and filled it with the remaining food on his plate. Closing the lid on his container he put his wallet back into his phone and his wallet back into his pocket. It seemed that the two were wrapping up their meeting and while it felt as if that wasn't enough time it was going to, unfortunately, happen sooner or later. Ezreal placed his box of food on the table and fixed his tie. "We should hang out soon though. It'd be nice to catch up some more."

The blond couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to work with Ezreal. Sure, the two had gone to school together but that seemed to be eons ago now. Now, they were both older and different from back then. He couldn’t help but thinking working with him now would be a new experience. Would he be his friend still? Or would he assume the role of being the boss? It made him curious. It also made him excited, Landon had been drifting around at this point in his life. He didn’t really have much of anyone to talk to or see and it made him happy to have Ezreal back in his life. He hoped that he would stick around for even longer this time. He had forgotten how much he missed his best friend.
“I haven’t actually, I mean I walked in once but I haven’t bought anything from there.” Landon admitted, he hadn’t had the money for their wine. He barely had any money for the cheap liquor. But truth be told, he wasn’t much of a fan of wine anyway. It never really tasted as good to him as other stuff. “But I do know one of the co-owners of the place,” he offered with a smile. The reason that he knew one of them was nothing short of illegal, but Ezreal didn’t need to know those details. “In fact, mention my name to him, tell him I sent you. He’ll give you a good discount then.” The smile on his lips grew a bit more. “I’m happy you’re back too.”
Once Anne came back with the checks and boxes, the blond took his, sliding his burger and the leftover fries into his box before closing the lid. He took the check, glancing down at it before cringing a bit inside. For someone who could make a good few hundred in one afternoon, he never seemed to have enough money on him for anything. Why did living have to be so expensive? It wasn’t like he was about to try and smooth talk Anne into giving him a discount in front of Ezreal. So, he reluctantly took his wallet out and handed her the twenty dollars he had on him, part of him feeling shameful that he couldn’t give her nearly the tip that his friend had. “Thanks for eating with me,” he returned the compliment. “and thanks for coming back. I’ve missed having you around.”
After he put his wallet back in his pocket and grabbed his box of leftovers, he stood sliding from the booth. “Definitely, we still have a lot to talk about and I’m not about to let you get out of it this time,” he joked, grinning at him before leading the way out of the diner.
