▱▰▱I was being given steadily more responsibility lately now that my skills had improved. One jonin assessed that my skills were roughly on par with that of a jonin which was a necessary confidence boost as I began taking on higher-level missions such as these. I was being sent to the border between the Fire and Iron countries to the north. Additionally, I was supposed to meet with some higher-level shinobi from Arashigakure to help with the mission. I was unsure of who I would be meeting but I was certain that I was the only genin. Seems that both the Hokage and Arashikage want this matter taken care of. I thought as I read over the mission assignment from the scroll. The basic description was that a samurai target was poisoning the border towns of the Land of Fire with toxic gas. It was assumed that this target was a Mahofu but the intel was too inconsistent. Arashi wanted to help because this target was using his toxins to disrupt the supply chain between the Land of Fire and Arashi. When I approached the meeting point on the road I saw Takao and some other Arashi shinobi. I approached them casually and presented my identification. I smirked under my mask as I did not expect to see Takao but to the others, I seemed more serious than I actually was. I needed to be very professional for a big mission like this. Once it was clear who I was I would greet them and let my foreign comrades in on my idea. "I'm a toxicology specialist and from what I know about gases is that they're easy to ingest, especially for multiple targets. But the inhaled poison is weaker than liquid in the veins. It doesn't last as long either. I think he hits the same towns multiple times to keep them subdued for...whatever his purposes are. He seems to have a pattern as well. Based on the reports, I think his target for later tonight is a tiny town called Shirakawa. It's two miles south of here." I did my homework on this mission because I was going to be the only Leaf shinobi on it and I wanted to make a good impression. I also did not want to be a clueless genin. I waited for Takao and the others to respond as I did not presume to just start marching toward Shirakawa without my team's input. The Sun would set soon, however, and I wanted to ensure that we would get to Shirakawa just before the target.

Takao was the go-to liaison for Konoha. Some of his comrades thought it was favoritism, but Takao wasn't sure Miyuki liked him at all. It was more like, he was pretty convenient and he had a recorded history of working with Leaf ninja successfully now. He liked to believe it wasn't because Miyuki thought keeping him busy would prevent a repeat of the Leylines, which had lead to the entire world going to s**t.
So when he saw Nimure, he grinned ear to ear. It was just his luck. He listened to Nimure's explanation and made thoughtful noises like he was imagining anything other than how great their bro bonding time was going to be. "Right on. Let's head to Shirakawa and earn a solid victory for both our villages, eh?""We don't know that what the kid said is eve-""You'll treat Nimure as co-lead on this mission, with as much authority as myself." He couldn't speak for Konoha's line of command, but he could have his men respect Nimure as much as he did.
When they'd begin travelling, he'd stick close to his buddy. "It's pretty cool that they've got you on this mission, huh?" He pulled a Gold Scarab cigarette from his pocket and lit it up. "How's Kiku doin'?" He hoped Nimure would take it as a casual interest, though he was personally invested in her well-being after their shared mission.

▱▰▱I humbly smiled and chuckled at Takao when he cut off his subordinate and made me a leader on the mission. "You're the boss, Takao, but he's right. I'm still only a genin but I'll do what I can." Granted, I was pleased by the faith that my friend had placed in me but I did not want excessive attention for it. "For sure! I didn't know you were assigned to this mission." It was a pleasant surprise to see Takao and I did display some genuine enthusiasm as I walked on the road with him. This was the first mission that I can recall where I truly felt like a leader on the team. It was a rare treat for me as I was so relatively inexperienced. Granted, I knew that I had some serious potential but I also understood that I had a lot to learn. In retrospect though, I knew I was hot s**t. "Good! But why do you care? I thought you didn't like her." The last time I saw them together they nearly came to blows. I had a somewhat smarmy tone when I brought this up to Takao. Okay, I actually had a really smarmy tone about it. But I had my reasons! I turned my focus back to the job at hand when we started approaching Shirakawa. "I just hope he shows up here after sundown and we can get him now. If not, I know a couple other places he might be." I looked around Shirakawa as we walked off the road but I tried to stay out of sight. I found a good spot for Takao and I to hide in the tall grass as the other shinobi in our party discretely spread out to cover more area.

Takao clapped Nimure on the shoulder when the kid insisted on being humble about it."And I'm only a chunin. You can do great things at any rank. Hell, the Arashikage was a chunin beforehand. Although, word is she actually received two separate chunin promotions. Dunno what that's about, though." He laughed good-naturedly as they continued about the mission. Of course, he had no answer to Nimure's question.
"Er, well, I mean - heh - she's your friend and like, the apple of your eye, y'know? I care about her because I care about you."I know more about her than she ever wanted me to. She's mean to protect herself from letting others get too close. You need to keep persisting; don't let her isolate herself. He worried about the two of them so much when he was in the Storm. He didn't really have a reason for it. Not one he was willing to admit to himself. "Okay, so, I'll go on your signal." He was excited to be sitting with Nimure in the tall grass.

▱▰▱I smirked again when Takao insisted that Kiku was not his friend. "Yeah, that's what it is." I said sarcastically with the full knowledge that my friend was a terrible liar. Perhaps they had become friends since then and I was unaware of it. Either way, I preferred this new state of peace in my friend group.
▱▰▱I watched carefully as night began to fall on Shirakawa. I waited patiently for the arrival of our target. My patience was rewarded when a dense purple fog began filling the town. "Go! Don't breathe the poison!" I jumped from the grass and put my arms behind my back for my classic shinobi run. My rebreather mask allowed me to breathe without having to inhale the toxic miasma. As I ran through the fog, I formed a handseal and concentrated my chakra. I suddenly bumped into an object and realized that it was a black-armored samurai using a special rebreather mask of his own to disperse more miasma and make it thicker. The samurai would suddenly feel the force of a massive wind stream blast him away. This stopped the miasma from spreading as I interrupted the source and continued blowing the wind over the village. However, the miasma would not disperse at all despite the high-level wind technique. What?! I was confused and irritated by the stubborn poison as the toxin infected dozens of townsfolk who walked around the town while coughing. I stopped blowing out the wind stream before running out of the cloud of poison in the direction of where I blasted away the samurai. "Takao! He's over here!" I ran toward the samurai who unsheathed his sword as I approached. Toxic chakra bubbles coated my skin as I removed my gloves and channeled toxic chakra over my hand to stab the samurai in the chest. The samurai extended his arm toward Nimure and Takao as it turned to miasma with a draconic shape.

Takao's face burned as Nimure was clearly unconvinced with what the jinchuuriki had to say. Thankfully, the mission began for real and they could focus on the task at hand. When Nimure's wind jutsu didn't disperse the miasma, Takao took to the air to get some distance from it [ Solo Flight ]. Of course, it wasn't long before the samurai was starting to fight. While Nimure stabbed at him, the miasma dragon was a problem they both needed to steer clear of. He had an opportunity to use some of the skills Chomei taught him, using speed release and sonic chakra to make whirlwinds against the miasma [ Sonic Technique: Razor Wind [ Sonniku no Jutsu: Kamisori Kaze ] | B ]. "How are we going to be able to get rid of this s**t?" He asked, hoping the sonic chakra would work better than the failed wind release.
Time was of the essence if they wanted to limit poisonings. Takao only had some knowledge of medical jutsu and he really didn't want to put it to the test in a high-stress situation. He was no combat medic.

▱▰▱I was confused by the miasma's sudden dispersal using more wind. However, Takao's wind had some kind of neon chakra property to it. I was unsure why, but I was rather fixated on it. Then neon green chakra was almost blinding it was so bright but it also had a buzzing appearance and texture. It reminded him of his kikaichu but this buzzing was far more...rhythmic. It was somewhat satisfying to the ears in a basic sense. Its power was also impressive as it seemed to transcend other kinds of fuuton.
▱▰▱Loads of people in the area were collapsing as more shinobi from our squad started closing in on the enemy. Hoping that Takao and the others would be able to handle him, I jumped away from him and returned to the center of town. I started applying healing chakra to as many people as I could. I hovered my hands over the lungs to extract the miasma and revive them one by one. "Take him down! My hands are kinda full!" I yelled to the others as my concern immediately turned to the townspeople who were poisoned. If I did not do my duty as a medic then a dozen people would needlessly die. The samurai now turned both arms into miasma dragons. One would fly up to attack Takao and the other would attack the other shinobi from Arashi surrounding him. If he was successful then the miasma would spread back to the town and harm Nimure and likely kill the already poisoned residents.

Takao was still limited in his knowledge of speed release sonic techniques. He was going to need to rely on his knowledge of wind release and have Chomei's chakra imbue it with sonic nature instead. From his position in the air, he sucked in a deep breath at Nimure's cue and slammed a fist in his chest, expelling a powerful blast of air that was strengthened by sonic chakra because of Chomei [ ▰ Drilling Air Projectile [ Renkuudan ] | Rank S / Sonic Chakra enhanced ]. He let the technique address the miasma dragons the samurai had sent out. Before attacking the samurai directly, he called out to Nimure. "Do you need help down there? I'm a trained medic too, y'know."
Then, he charged a fuuton technique against the samurai himself. A net created of wind shot directly at the samurai to capture him and prevent further miasma abuse [ Cast Net [ Kakeami ] | Rank A ].

▰ Cast Net [ Kakeami ] | Rank A Using their fuuton chakra the user creates layers of thin fine lines of it intertwined with each other, this effectively creates a cutting net made of fuuton that fails inward on itself to catch the slice the target into multiple pieces. Because of the method of it’s creation targets start out trapped but instead may escape though the holes of it’s crisscross pattern before it enclosing in around them. If used on a target that is in the air the cost of evasive techniques used to escape this jutsu require one rank higher of their resources. (Only an A Rank is required but should be paid for as if S) The wind release shuushin and solo flight being exempt from this rule.

▱▰▱I watched Takao destroy the miasma dragons with ease using more of that unique neon green chakra. A net made of wind would then envelop the samurai before he collapsed under the constraints of the trap. I rolled my eyes at Takao's suggestion that he help me out. "I've got it, can't let you have all the credit, now." I responded sarcastically as Takao saved the day and captured the target. Besides, I was making enough headway and managed to heal everyone who was poisoned. Thankfully, the poison only fully impacted the center of town and was not allowed to spread any further. I stood up and walked toward Takao and only stopped when I reached the bound samurai. "That toxic gas was powerful. Far more potent than what any toxicologist could make..." I looked down at my hand as it glowed with healing chakra. I placed my hand on his neck and felt the blood transfusion successfully mix his blood with my own. The green glow of my chakra subsided as I felt myself become empowered by the new DNA. "We'll take him to Konoha since it's nearby and report our success." One of the Arashi shinobi spoke up as they put additional bindings on him and brought him into custody so that Takao would not have to maintain the jutsu. I broke off from the group with Takao and we all went our separate ways. "Looks like we're off the hook early." It was pleasant to be able to enjoy the rest of the day with a mission accomplished and not needing to do the bureaucratic side of mission completion. "Hey, why was your wind chakra neon and vibrating all of a sudden earlier?" Takao's new skills were of interest to me as I practiced miasma generation. I created a small cloud of purple miasma in my hand before releasing it. It was not poisoned so it only had the effects of regular smoke.

Takao rolled his eyes at what Nimure had to say, but he was still smiling when he descended to the ground to meet Nimure there. The kid did some iryojutsu to the samurai's blood - likely coagulating it - but then the two of them were talking and Nimure was practicing a smoke generation not unlike the miasma. It seemed Nimure had other purposes for this mission.
"Well, that vibrating chakra is all from Chomei. He gives me access to sonic chakra which can augment regular wind techniques. He also allows me to use certain speed release techniques without having the ancestry necessary." Then he shrugged, and pulled out a box of Gold Scarab cigarettes. He gestured with the box in case Nimure wanted one. "It's one of those things all the bijuu can do. They're all able to strengthen your attacks and give you access to something special. I dunno why, really, but it's pretty neat. Now, what's this s**t you're trying to do?" Takao scrutinized the smoke-miasma Nimure was creating and wondered how long it'd take the kid to master the new art.

▱▰▱My eyes grew wide and interested when Takao began talking about Chomei's supersonic jutsu. "So he can use chakra to make wind stronger and increase your speed. That's dope. He must be super fast when he's flying." I was geeking out over Chomei since he always seemed like the ultimate bug to me. Since I am a member of the Aburame clan, my interest in insects was an expected personal cliche. "Yeah, I've heard that they all have special powers like that. What else can Chomei do?" I was curious to find out if my friend's bijuu had any other special traits. I thought more about the reading I had done on Chomei since meeting Takao. "He's an enormous rhinoceros beetle with six wings and armor. He's definitely the coolest." I admired the mega-bug's special traits a bit longer before responding to Takao's question of me. I slowly grew the cloud of miasma in my hand as I gained more control over it. "Don't worry about it, dude. There's no poison in it." I reassured Takao as the cloud of smoke grew thicker and denser.

Nimure's fanboying of Chomei had him thinking about Chomei's future. After all, Takao had let the bug down multiple times - and vice versa - and it wasn't like Takao intended to do much more high-end shinobi s**t. He wanted to retire young and do something he wanted to do with his life, instead of following a path based on trauma. Yes, the conversation was planting a few seeds in his mind for what to do in the near future...
"Hmm, well Chomei can also utilize a lot of sensory jutsu. He has a lot of cool stuff on his own so it's not like I try to imbue his sonic chakra into my own sensory stuff. His armor is pretty tight. He's a pretty solid bug, all things considered, y'know. He's done right by me." Takao had looked off into the distance as he spoke, voice becoming a little dreamier as he let his mind wander. But he came back to himself and the mission at hand as Nimure continued to manipulate the new miasma. "Yeah, well, if you do poison me, I'm totally ratting you out to Lady Hokage. She likes me." Takao put his hands on his hips and puffed out his chest a bit, wondering if Nimure would believe that he and the Hokage were good friends.

▱▰▱I nodded and smiled as I learned more about Chomei. "He's much cooler than these little bastards I have crawling around in my body. The destruction bugs. All they know how to do is ruin s**t." I spoke resentfully about the insects that lived in disharmonious symbiosis with me. At least I was having a good mental health day so far. "Everybody likes you, Takao." I gave my bro a compliment as I focused on generating more miasma. "I'm workin' on becoming a poison specialist in JUEI. Do you know anything about this kekkei genkai? Though, it's good with poison so that's enough for me." I had no idea that it was a unique bloodline from the samurai lands. Once I started getting the hang of my miasma control, I snapped my fingers and created a miasma cloud over a field to the side of the road. It was rather cool as I danced up and down the road sliding my heels and generating harmless miasma around me. It made me feel like a magician as I danced along. I really enjoyed dancing in my room while listening to my records and felt that I was getting a lot better at it. Perhaps someday I could get out of my shell and impress the people at the jazz club someday.

"Those bugs can save lives too," Takao insisted, thinking Nimure was just feeling self-conscious in comparison to a bijuu. But he laughed mirthlessly as Nimure insisted he was well-liked. Takao was a bit of a polarizing subject in Arashigakure, with many thinking he was still unworthy of trust despite the new Arashikage's continuous flow of tasks for him. He didn't feel like correcting the Aburame's perspective, though.
"Uh... well, I don't really hit the books much. I'm pretty sure it's a samurai bloodline because it wasn't covered in the Storm academy." He knew the samurai had some strange secrets and stranger ancestral powers, but he lacked most of the details pertaining to it. It wasn't an area of interest since his interaction with all of them was so minimal. "JUEI would be lucky to have you." Takao said it and meant it, though his face fell as he recalled that he himself had earned a Chunin promotion and had put in no work towards following one of the leadership paths set out for such ninja. He felt aimless and far too generalized in his talents to be worth anything to any organization like JUEI or ANBU. "Kiku is really lucky to have you. Er, I mean Konoha. Konoha is lucky to have you."

▱▰▱I chose not to correct the record with Takao regarding the kikaichu. In my view, the only purpose of the kikaichu was to destroy. If they managed to save lives in a given situation it was because an Aburame directed them to. Otherwise, they were merely guided by an unending hunger. I always felt that they had no reason to exist other than to be controlled and weaponized. My greatest fear was always what would happen to my family if we were to lose control. The main advantage of this breed is that it allows for a much sturdier host. This increases the host's stat caps granted by class for Endurance and Strength by 1.
