Greetings, I am graphic design wannabe Chisa! In this thread I'll be posting whats going on in my professional life because... well just because. ~ My Sites ~ My portfolio: teresawatts.comMy DeviantArt account: chisa.deviantart.comMy journal site: ChiArts ~ About Me ~ The long and boring life story of Chisa My real name is Teresa, and I live in Perth, Australia, probably the most isolated state capital in Australia, and also probably the worst for web and graphic design jobs. I always thought of myself as a creative person, but my family are all very left-brained people, and do not consider an Arts degree a real degree, and (though they don't say it this way exactly) seem to equate 'artist' with 'bum'. And so I embraced the left side of my brain, and did Calculus and Physics and Chemistry through highschool instead of art. With those kinds of subjects, it was of course only natural to follow in my father's footsteps, and study Electronic Engineering, with a Computer Science degree thrown in just because I could. I never stopped drawing though. One and a half years after I started my degrees, a friend got me interested in vector art. While searching for tutorials, I stumbled across a forum with a list of links to the portfolios of inspirational artists. As I browsed through them, I was amazed at their skill, and also intrigued by this 'graphic design' that most of them claimed to do for a living. That started me off, and after looking into the career a little further, I realised that this was what I was meant to be doing. I had always been unsatisfied with engineering, but never had something that I'd rather do instead. After discovering it, I decided to do everything in my power to become sucessful in graphic design, no matter what people told me about how hard it is to get a job. And so, I gave up the security of the engineering degree. As I was already 1 and a half years through the 3 year comp sci degree, I figured I might as well finish it before moving on completely to the next phase of my life. So that brings me to now, still struggling with computer science, trying to learn all I can about graphic design on my own. If you managed to read down this far, I commend your concentration skills xd

Updates 12.3.05Portfolio redone! teresawatts.com. See last post for details; comments appreciated! 13.9.04 I've been offered an interview! The director of that company is a friend of a friend, and he's probably just doing it as a favour to him, but still... who cares, work experience for me! 6.9.04 Emailed out my resume and portfolio to 15 web and graphic design companies. 23.8.04 I'm sick at home with tonsillitis sad I can't concentrate enough to study, but I managed to put a long and boring life story in the first post, and get started on a pic of my avatar. 20.8.04 Gave up on colouring that picture, but you can see the inked and toned version in my latest post. Eventually I'll get around to using those pics as examples in an art auction. 7.11.04 Art auction on! Come visit me and help me get a good price! You can see the sample I'm using in my last post in this portfolio topic.

Well, I've only seen your portafolio so far, and I thought it was very well done, very profesional. I do think you could feature some more examples, if you have them, so that there is some more variety. Make up fake websites and companies. In class I've done several projects where we had to pretend we were comissioned by someone and make the project based on their requests and timelimit. It was all fake, of course, but provided us with the experience, and gave us things to add to our portafolio.
That reminds me that I should work on mine, I have the domain but there's nothing there except for my old personal homepage, which is not so good, haven't updated in years... I see that most artist now a days are using flash to create their websites... must get hands on copy of flash.
EDIT: Ok, I visited your personal site and it's not loading correctly for me... or, at least, I don't know if it's supposed to be like that. When I click on any of the links it takes me back to the home page. And it's stretched to the side. I can read the tagboard though.

tiranaki I've been told that a well designed html site is much better than a poorly designed Flash site - so if you're going to get into it, make sure you can do it well. I guess its not totally necessary, but hey, an extra skill can't hurt eh? And its so fun to play around with! and you also have a flash slave that comes to save you at your call .. huahua

The alignment goes all crazy in Mozilla, so that might be the problem. That site is kind of embarrassing; I was mostly trying out a few things, but didn't bother to make sure it was compatible with different browsers, and I used Flash for the nav, which I'm now realising I could have done with Javascript and made more portable xp All in all its a horrible mess of layers and iframes. I'm planning on redoing it, making it all minimal and simple. Thanks for the input though!

I decided that the above picture really wasn't working out, and not worth finishing... just ended up inking it and putting in some simple tones on the computer instead. When I have time, I'm planning to start up an art auction for this style of artwork on Gaia, to try and make a bit of extra gold without having to properly cg anything blaugh These are both of my avatar, in different outfits: Maybe I'll do a picture of all the mods of this guild, to use as another example...

Fifteen emails have now been sent by me to fifteen different web and graphic design companies. Hopefully at least one of those won't mind giving me a bit of work experience... maybe even paid if I'm really lucky?
Wish me luck!

Sigh... a week has gone by, and of the fifteen companies that I sent my resume to, only one has responded (saying they're too busy for work experience people sweatdrop ).
I'm probably just being too impatient but... sigh.
On a positive note, and friend and I are thinking of creating an online magazine... and we already have a few businesses who are interested in sponsoring us and advertising in it whee This is gonna be fun.
