I've made enough progress on the backend of the new guild website to have a good idea of what will be needed in the layout. So lets get cracking on design!
We want something clean and simple to make for easy reading, yet still spiffy looking enough to justify ourselves as graphic designers.
The end design will most likely be a collaborative effort betwen SilverVixen, GhoSt-X and myself, but suggestions will most definitely be appreciated and taken into account. At this stage what I'm asking you guys for is not necessarily a complete site desgin concept, just links to sites that you think have a layout appropriate for our purposes, and what aspects of them you think you could use, what you like about them, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Here's a few sites I thought looked sort of appropriate: http://www.mezzoblue.com/ - a bit on the bright side >.< Still, we've got the nice clean concept, the basic 2 column layout will work really well for our site I think, the bright colours makes it seem more exciting, all nicely css'ed. I love the little white 'Coming Events' box with round corners. Could take some bits from its site structure. http://www.andybudd.com/index.php - 2 coloumn layout again. Very slick, love the use of the simple tiled background. Very clean, very readable. http://www.nathanderksen.com/ - 2 column layout again, this time with the smaller column on the left instead of the right. Less constrained layout by leaving out borders. Clean and readable again, although I dont' like the greyscale.

Ooh exciting! *must think of design*
Dang it, I wish I could get on here at work.... they don't like that much. I'll probably have time to work on it though... Hmmhmmhmmm.
It's Friday! I want to stay home like last Friday. Oh well.
I will be on later, hopefully with some ideas! biggrin

Since all those seen to be 2 column layouts I take it thats what you want?
On your first suggestion, I like how the dates come out. Kinda like one of those daily desk calendars. Also, I kinda like how the second and third ones show recent/featured events/works. Makes it easy to see if there have been updates or the like. Speaking of which, is the site going to have an RSS feed? Might be a good idea.

Yes, sorry, I should have mentioned that sweatdrop I think it would work best, seeing as we'll need a main menu (horizontal under the header, or built into the header), and a list of the different sections articles are in down the side, with a login space built in somewhere. RSS feed? Um... I'll have to figure out what that is and get back to you on that one sweatdrop

*phew* alright, here's my concept so far: conceptThe top banner is a temp until I can think of something better (or someone else does... hinthint). When I get around to finishing the backend, the login thing and some options will be in the coloured thing on the right, as well as a skin chooser if that gets done. Um... yeah. It still needs tweaking, but... opinions? I'll admit its not my best work, but we need something in a hurry if we're going to have an issue this month. // EDIT: looking at it again, the menu needs to be muchhhh thinner >.<

However I think the font used on the Gaian Designer guild needs a little bit of tweaking.. Hmmm ..... neutral

Much better than the current site. Nav needs to be thinner. Please tell me CSS is going to be dealing with the menu? Like the background. Colours are okay. They are kinda boring though... Too Web Developer. The blue and orange thing are not really 2005's colours...but it is the tried and tested colours... http://www.adampolselli.com/2005/I agree that the header font needs to be changed... It needs to really *POP* Great start though.

I made some quick mods to the design you showed, just for the fun of it. Small Changesedit: also, small note...watch your spelling. (archives is spelt wrong, and on yours so is Photoshop.)

Yeah, I started messing around with the top banner, then kinda gave up and finished the rest first. I think some cool vector art would look great there, but I don't have anything appropriate or really the time to make something sweatdrop

Definitely needs to be thinner; it looked different somehow in Photoshop. Hrmmm colours... It started out as just blue, then I stuck in some orange to offset it a bit... what other colours would you suggest instead? I have a feeling some macho members would feel that purple is too effeminate xp The header is temporary until I (or someone else?) gets some inspiration.

(archives is spelt wrong, and on yours so is Photoshop.) Yeah, my spelling sucks =_= Not so sure about putting the top stories and story nav at the top there... Personally I'd stick top stories in the bar on the left (if I could figure out how to calculate the top stories), and the story nav at the bottom somewhere...

http://www.colourlovers.com/index.cfm?section=palettes&view=topAt that site there are some great colour schemes. I was just messing around. I just hope that there is some story nav and maybe something to get the recent stories or something... I added a little something to the header, but I think someone here could do way better than I ever could. Keep us updated. biggrin

Whew. That site is a lot less complicated than the last. I do enjoy the current colors. The orange text on blue background isn't quite right, but the button and title image circle things look great.
