Mochi are rice cakes made from glutinous rice. It's really eaten all year 'round, but especially at New Years. There are different ways to prepare it (my mom usually made yakimochi, where she pan-grilled it and wrapped it in nori).

There's a company that puts ice cream in mochi and it's SO good X3;

XD To make the actual mochi? It's a difficult process ._.; Traditionally, it's pounded in a huge mortar.


But there are ways to make it in the microwave XD; You'll need:

2 cups of mochiko (glutinous rice flour)
1.5 cups of sugar
2 cups of water
katakuriko (potato starch flour)

Mix mochiko and sugar in bowl. Add water until well blended. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high for 4.5 minutes. Take out and mix thoroughly. Microwave again for 3.5 minutes. Dump onto cutting board lightly powdered with katakuriko. Shape into round cakes.

To make yakimochi, you need to wrap a piece of nori seaweed around it and grill it in a pan. Serve with soy sauce.
