I want to know if I should get paint shop pro 8 or the newest version of photoshop... Which do you think, and why? Does anyone know where I can get plain photoshop, not the specific photoshops, but THE photoshop.

I'm not sure what you mean by THE Photoshop. I doubt the original Photoshop would do you much good (even if you could get it to run), and since then they've upgraded the features each version, and the newest is Photoshop CS 2, aka Photoshop 9. You can however get Photoshop Elements, which is a toned down and much cheaper version with some of the more complex features missing. That might be better for you, depending on what you want to do.

I've never used Paintshop Pro before, so I can't say much about that... I can say that if you are planning on working in Graphic Design as a career, most jobs that I've seen advertised require knowledge of Photoshop. It seems to be kind of a standard? But if you just want to mess around with it and do some digital art, it could (although I wouldn't know because I haven't tried it) be better than Photoshop, which was initially created to manipulate photos. There was a bunch of nice art program reviews in the AD forum, but it says 'Message temporarily offline' at the moment stressed But there are other alternatives to just those two.

If you can afford it, go photoshop. you will never see a job posting for a graphic designer with paintshop pro skills. Learn photoshop, but don't just learn that. Photoshop is great for web graphic and mucking around with photos, but if you want to get into page layouts, cd books, or just about anything else, you'll also need experience with programs like Illustrator, QuarkExpress or InDesign. Don't dismiss the other programs, they all serve a unique purpose.

For cost value, PSP is(I would say) better than Photoshop if you can't shell out $600(and of course, if you can't shell out $100 GIMP would be best).

PSP8 was AWFUL. The layout and everything were just.. yech. I have PSP7 still because I never upgraded. However, I'm looking at PSP9 because the layout is better than the previous version, and it has traditional media mimicking tools, which I think is pretty dern neat(as well as some other useful tools, like background eraser).

I'm not exactly sure what the rage is all about with Photoshop(although I'd hope its tablet handling was better than PSP, at least, as I am having some issues with PSP7 and my Wacom). Of course, I haven't touched a trial of PS(PhotoShop) is a long, long time, so.. *shrugs*

A lot of places do want you to know how to use Photoshop, but I wouldn't view that as a reason to break the bank for it. Then again, I'm very quick to pick up on how to use something, so if you have trouble learning programs you may want to consider sticking with the industry standard from the start. Someday I plan on buying Photoshop, and possibly a few other programs, but Paint Shop Pro is a VERY respectful program. 3nodding

I know how to use photoshop, in design, pagemaker, and paintshop pro. I just wanted to know which one of the newer ones I should get for coloring photos. I didn't know if the newer photoshops had a good coloring program because from what I've heard it doesn't.

From what I know, Photoshop was originally created for photo editing, but people then started using it to create graphics and colour things as well. Its possible to colour with it perfectly fine (thats what I use), but I hear that Painter is much better for simulating different media, and better for colouring in the way that you would with traditional media. It draws more on real painting techniques, because thats what it was created for, whereas for Photoshop they tacked on extra features as it started becoming popular for non-photography stuff.

Its not really even any additions. People are using tools typicly used for photowork or digital darkroom tools for coloring, like dodging and burning. You can use photoshop to color with, but as I've tried to teach others with other issues, use the tool that is made for the problem at hand.

On a side note, illustrator cs2 supposidly has some nice coloring tools built into it now.new features in illustrator

I havn't tried them out yet, but I'll give them a workover when I acn

The thing with Illustrator, though, is that it's created for vectors like Photoshop was made for photos. So while it would be great for vector art(duh) as they show in the example, it would probably be awful for, uhm, anything else. razz

Though i would like to know what photoshop cs is about... can someone inform me?

tonikaku, photoshop has to be the best. Because theorethically... you can do anything all other programs can do with photoshop. With the exception of animation. vector... graphic... cg... photoediting... conversion.. and so on and so forth. In fact, they should change the name to "ULTIMATEEDITINGTOOLOFDOOM!" pirate

blaugh Then people will have even less respect for digital artists than they already do! There are already too many people out there who think that you can do ANYTHING in Photoshop instantly and with zero effort xp

As for the 'CS' thing, it stands for 'Creative Suite', and all the new newest versions of Illustrator, ImageReady etc have that on the end of them... something to do with being able to identify them as more of a package kinda thing, I think 3nodding
