Just a thoughtful thread. What did each Generation of games give us? What did they have wrong with them? Consider each generation internally; don't compare, say, Yellow's graphics to Ruby's.

I'll start.

Red/Blue:

+Gave us Pokemon. Duh.
+The first 150 Pokemon.
+Rival kept you and your attitude in check.
-Using an HM meant it never came off. Yay, Venusaur with Cut! stare
-No Mew that wasn't from NOA or sharked in. That is, until the Mew Trick came up.
-You can never rechallenge trainers you previously faced except the Elite Four. So once you smite them, you smite them. Forevers.
-Psychics kicked the a** of everything, which prompted teams of nothing but Psychics and cheap bastards. Bah.
-Missingno could bone your game royally.
-Dittos suck. Majorly.
-I want that TM! s**t. The pack's full. Time to use s**t.
-I beat the game. Now what? Oh, just play the elites over and OVER.

Yellow:
+Pikachu followed you around, being all cute and s**t.
+With a Surfing Pikachu, you got a minigame - Pikachu's Beach
+First time friendliness came into play (Pikachu)
+Better Sprites than before - with some color to them
+All three Starters avaliable in one game
+Cities changed color as you enter/exit.
+Look, it's Jessie and James!
-Couldn't evolve Pikachu unless you traded it and evolved...but that was the point.
-Still that problem with TMs.
-Ditto still useless.
-My pack is still full. I knew I should have left the map.
-I beat the game. Again, now what? Oh, I have Red, but after that...

Stadium 1 (American Release):

+3D Pokemon. So that's what Geodude looks like from behind.
+The Battle Tower. Now build around just three, punks.
+More Minigames.
-Somebody kill the announcer. Please.

Snap:

+Hey, it's something different to do!
-There's not a lot of Pokemon, are there?
-I beat the game. Now what?
-Oh, look, they do the same thing EVERY TIME. How special.

Gold/Silver:
+100 new Pokemon.
+Color! Full color!
+Eggs. Now I can just breed the starters instead of keeping them from each game, and use breed moves, and Ditto is no longer useless.
+Time and day based stuff. It get dark! It gets light! It's Thursday! whee
+Dark comes in and makes Psychic metagamers BOW.
+Two New Eeveelutions.
+Could go to Kanto!
+Trainers have names, instead of just Younster # 3.1457eleventyNethdoesnotknowPi.
+Nastier rival. God, what a b*****d!
+I beat the game. Now what--ooo! Kanto!
+Berries mean never having to use a full heal if you don't want to.
+Mystery gift! Lookie my room, with its Pikachu bed...
+Pokegear means phone calls, no map to carry, and radio.
+No being forced to hold on to HMs anymore!
+Steel types introduced. Magnemite no longer sucks.
+ Special Splits into Special Attack and Defense. Two more Stats!
+New balls mean new ways of catching things.
+Bug Contest.
-I want my GS BALL. Like yesterday.
-Way to go, Kurt, you make ONE BALL AT A TIME. I need 12.
-Cinnabar gets ********, the Seafoams get invaded by whiny old Blaine, the Powerplant is back up, the kickass Pokemon Tower is replaced with a radio tower, The Safari zone is shut down because no one could think to get a new Warden, and they've ran Moltres off of Victory road. Joi. evil
-What do you mean I only get one of each stone? I want a Raichu AND a Jolteon, thank you.
-Getting beat in the bug contest by some punk with a Butterfree.
- Trainers will call you when their ready for rebattle...or any other bloody time to say nothing of use.
-Team Rocket = Total pussies. "Wah! Come back, Giovanni!" Psh. What the s**t?
-What is the point of Aipom?
-Time Machine meant many people took the tradeover way out of beating the game.
-Game short; used Kanto's Elites instead of their own.
-Many nice Pokemon unavaliable until later in game.
-Chasing the dogs. Everywhere.
-Whoever first said "Pikablu" should be beaten. With a stick.
-Whirlpool? WTF is that?
-No Pokeflute. It's back to buying Awakening/Full Heal.
-Swarming. Ugh. I hate calculated hunts.

Crystal:

+Female Trainer first introduced. Yay! I can stop crossdressing!
+Suicune part of the plot and stays put. One less dog to chase.
+Much more detail to buildings. The Burnt Tower actually looks burnt, not just shorter.
+Buena's Password means points! Points buy stuff! And you can get her number!
+The Pokemon move when they come into battle. How...animated.
+At least now the people calling you have, you, know personalities. And four of them will give you extra stones!
+Kurt can now make more than one ball at a time.
-Still have to chase the other two.
-I have to catch HOW many beasts to get to Ho-oh? And I can't just trade them? You've got to be shitting me.

Stadium 2:
+More Pokemon.
+More, new Minigames.
+Dodrio Mode means fast hatching.
+I can see my room in 3D! Yay!
-The announcer is still not dead.

Ruby/Sapphire
+135 New Pokemon.
+New region. Comepletely new Region.
+Look at that new City design! Not just buildings and land--no we got a city in a old volcano!
+I'm going to stare at my reflection in the water. For an HOUR.
+Desert, Underwater, Mountains--so many new terrains to travel.
+Secret Bases! I can hide s**t!
+More mixing of types.
+My Pokemon have personalities!
+Contests. A whole new way to battle.
+Jessie and James were right. Two on one is perfectly fair.
+Dive means going underwater. It's like Fly--for Waters!
+Whirlpool is le poof.
+Trainer's eyes means OMGZ profiles.
+Rebattling sparked by randomness on the Trainers eyes.
+The first game to have more than one crime organization. Magma and Aqua!
+Two bikes, two uses: Mach and Acro. *hops around on her bike*
+Yay, running shoes! I'm not forced to walk till I get a bike!
-I still have to search and scramble for a damn stone. How hard are they to find? ********.
-Who thought it was a good idea to make ROCK SMASH a HM?
-...I can't use HOW Many Pokemon? They're nowhere to be found!
-For the love of god, explain why there are still too many TENTACOOL?
-Mirage Island = b***h to see.
-Feebas = b***h to catch. b***h to Evolve.
-No more time/day feature. Only use for clock is for growing berries and evolving traded-over Eevees into Espeon/Umbreon. Oh joy, a step backwards in innovations.

Colosseum:
+I'm an Anti Hero! Cool...
+New Spin on capturing--I can steal your s**t!
+Yay! G/S starters!
+Once I'm done with the game, I can breed the s**t outta my Purified Pokemon and FINALLY get missing Johto Pokemon!
+No narrator to tell what the hell was going on. Just sweet, sweet battling.
+Starting off with not one, but two pokemon. Sweet.
- Long pointless battles in order for you to get ho-oh. Thanks, it's not like I have other games to play...
-Complete lack of one-on-one battles. Not unless both you and the other guy are on their last Pokemon, which is a royal pain in the a**.
-Most of the BGM is brain-numbingly repetitive, much like leveling up your Pokemon.
-I'm forced to steal your s**t. There's no place for wild Pokemon!
-There's not many Pokemon, are there?
-I beat the game. Now what? Oh. Purification. FOREVER.

FireRed/LeafGreen
+Ah, the classics. With women.
+Team Rocket finally employes wimmens.
+There's stuff to do after beating the game! New Islands and s**t!
+Wireless! W00t!
+Minigames! Yay!
+So that's what a revive looks like.
+The Elites get harder. MUCH harder.
+Famechecker means backstory. Yay, backstory!
+Fight checker (or whatever it's called) allows you to scan the area for battle ready trainers. I will kick your a**. Again.
+ expanded areas that the original game did not have.
-I can't link up to WHAT until after I beat the game?
-Whatdya mean I have to trade to R/S to get my other Eeveelutions?

Emerald
+New Outfits for us. Whoop.
+I can link wirelessly!
+Sky Tower Early on!
+Two teams get their asses kicked for the price of one.
+Steven takes on the role of Red in G/S/C.
+Jello, Juan, how are j00? I see there is no Wallace. He is zee champ? Ah, good.
+I can get both fossils! Hah hah!
+Team Magma is so cute. ""To the staff of the Space Center: How are you? We are doing fine. We will soon visit you to take your Rocket Fuel." XD
+Rebattling Gym leaders. w00t!
-No wireless link to R/S.
-Kyogre and Groudon MOVE AROUND.
-What's with the girl in the bed in Rustboro?

Add, and I'll put them in. I'm starting to get handcramps.

This just brightened my day! xd

Especially that mention of Juan in Emerald. He's totally cooler than Wallace.

FireRed/LeafGreen:

-Many Johto Pokemon are STILL missing?

Between Ruby, Sapphire, Colosseum, and Emerald (You open new areas after you beat the elites), you can get them all.

*nodnod* Right, but I referred to FR/LG independantly for that one. I found it to be a *tad* pain in the a** to trade the Pokemon from Colosseum (keeping in mind this was before Emerald came out), breeding them, and then breeding more from them. That and I missed running into wild Hoothoot and Spinarak. I should really play Crystal again.
