This is my first attemp at cging realism (meaning no lines), so... uhh... take that in mind? xD;;; I'm still a complete novice with photo shop and photo shop elements (the sucky one, which is all I have) is not exactly the best program. But it's what I have.
So... please C&C? xD;;;;

It's... not -really- realism, more like lineless artwork.
Let's see. It's a bit messy... like, you can see some blank spots inbetween the rocks and his body. The rocks' outlines look sort of choppy too. As for the merman, his left eye looks slightly bigger than his right... and the eyes could use some more shading (like under the eyelids). His hairline looks like it's too high up. I don't think you can really see things through water that well, so your portrayal of him through the water might not be realistic (that sentence didn't really make sense, did it? sweatdrop )
I do like how you did the water, though, it's all nice and sparkly-looking. whee His fins look awesome too~~ Overall, you did a pretty good job for a first try. I didn't notice any mistakes in the preview.
Hah... I hope I didn't go overboard with the crits. sweatdrop

I think it looks more like lineless anime, but it's a very good start. I really like how you color the water, and the colors you choose are very nice.
Agree with most things Phishy Fish said. I think the torso is too long. And the hand is a bit weird. The fingers are to short & subby. It's a good thing that you don't hide it tho XD
Phishy Fish >> I'm always afraid I'm doing that too >_<

The hand does look a bit awkward, but what I think she was trying to do was draw the hand in a relaxed position... so the fingers would be going inward a bit and yeah. (I don't think this sentence made any sense either.)
Haha, okay then, I'm not alone! @w@;

If this is realism then somebody drew me wrong.
The advice that has allready been given to you is all correct. But this picture is a good step in the right direction for improving your artistic skills.

Thanks all for the adive.
When I said realism... I meant realistic anime... sort of style. xD;;;; *is so not good at explaining herself*
I noticed a lot of the mistakes mentioned after I posted this, but was too tired to correct them. I may go back later and change it.
I had a lot of trouble trying to decide where to darken/lighten the water and how opake I should make the merman's body... it was really tough. xD;;;
I have a lot of trouble with drawing torsos too long (I'm trying to fix it), so that's not surprising. xD;;;
And my hands need a lot of work. But, yes... I was trying for a little bit of a curled/relaxed position for the hand.
And don't worry about over critiquing any of my stuff. I need as much help as I can get.

I think the term ya'll are looking for is "CG painting"...?
*scratches head* All the above advice is good, and I can't really go lineless all that well myself. I guess if I had one crit, it would be the coloring on the face. It looks like you tried to blend the colors, but it came out like a bunch of similar-colored brushstrokes. Kind of like clay. Hm... is there anyway you can set the brush to blend more? Reduce the hardness, maybe?
Oh, and one more thing. Hair = pretty. But if you want to make it little more like real hair, draw a few stray strands. Nothing thick, just, you know, little flyaways.
Oh, and one more thing (well, I said IF I had one crit). The sky looks kind of... empty. Might just be the size of the picture, though.
Oh, and one more thing. He has a lazy eye. xD Sorry, had to say it.

I'm not going to repeat what everyone's said, however, if you'd like to improve your drawing skills (especially in the anatomy department for us anime artists (i seriously need that too)) it's best to start off with drawing from observation or realism.
Basically, you can look at pictures of people or do some still life. If you happen to be taking art classes, try to find an anatomy class with a model. I find it really helps.
If you can draw something realistically, you can take it just as easily and draw it into something in a different style, whether it be anime, abstract, whatever...
But good start. I do like it. Keep up the good work!
