I've only read the first volume, but I'm looking forward to reading the rest.
Without giving too much away ~
Afterlife is about where we go after we die. In this particular fiction though we all go to the same place (wicked or pure), and it's basically a bleak and desolate realm without any meaning or point. Everyone goes there, from Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa to Adolf Hitler. No matter what religion you followed or what kind of life you lead, it doesn't matter.
There is a lot more to the story and the plot moves forward with the characters, but the one thing that I found most interesting about the afterlife in Afterlife that I want to mention, is that in order to find an answer for why they and there and what the purpose of the place is... they created religion.
There are religions in the afterlife.
Ironic eh?
Look into the manga, it's a pretty good read, albeit very depressing. But the mystery aspect makes up for that.
