I what to see if there are any fans of Metal music.

I mostly like Power, Trash, Black, Gothic, and Melodic Death Metal.

Any good new cds you got? Post about it.
Any shows you plan on going to this year and more.

As for me I'm going to see Sonata Arctica in September and Finntroll to if I can get too.

Some bands I enjoy:
Vintersorg
Summoning
Avantasia
Borknagar
Blind Guardian
Children of Bodom
Dark Tranquillity
The Devin Townsend Band
Dio
Dragon Force
Dragon Land
Fairyland
Moonspell
Helloween
Iron Maiden
In Flames (R2R and before)
Kamelot
Katatonia
The Kovenant
Manowar
Megadeth
Opeth
Rhapsody Of Fire
Soilwork
Stratovarius

Note:
Nu-Metal and Metalcore aren't a part of Metal, they are only influenced by metal. If you want to talk about those bands, make a thread about it.

Erm... maybe with your new fangled genre's but rage = rap metal, NiN/B-Day massacre/Old school Manson = Industrial Metal, Fear Factory/Rammstein = Straight Metal.

I have the knowledge, magazines and contacts to back up my statements, given its the music I was brought up on. The bands themselves say they are metal, the magazines say they are metal... other bands say the bands I've listed are metal, the record companies say the bands I've listed are metal... people that have been into metal since before Iwas born say they are metal.... If you want further proof, I'll call upon a panel of my friends to judge the list and see what they have to say about it. I'd also like you to italicize the bands you haven't heard at all.

So erm... whats your basis for the genre's, now I've given you mine? smile

And yeah, I'm pretty sure... that 'rapcore' as you call it, was and still is to the best of knowledge known as rapmetal.

Also why are you dismissing Nu-Metal and Metalcore? As they are metal, they might not be straight metal, like your used to, but they are still a form of heavy metal, otherwise, lets discount some of the ridiculous number of made up heavy metal genre's there are and see how limited the lists get. Sheesh, its that type of elitism thats destroying metal and is the reason crap like trivium are popular.

And my mum just confirmed I'm right... you know, with her being into metal and goth and punk, pretty much since day 1 of the genres starting... yeah I kind of definitely have a leg up here.

Nu-Metal is Rock with Jazz, Metal, and Rap influences.
Metalcore is Hardcore that mixed Death metal or Thrash metal.

Both aren't Metal, only influenced by it. I like some Metalcore, but it's no more metal then Pop-Rock bands being Punk for being just influenced by it.

RATM = Rap Metal, is and always has been, there is no such thing as rapcore, or is that a term invented in the last 5 years meant to confuse people like me? Seriously, I have never heard anyone call RATM Rapcore.

NiN and Fear Factory = Industrials full title is Industrial metal. 'nuff said.

MM = Maybe shock rock now, but he was gothic metal when he started. See Antichrist Svperstar for more proof.

Rammstein and B-Day = Hard Rock? Motley Crue is Hard Rock I kind of think its hard to compare Rammstein, you know violent and aggressive to Motley Crue and their womanizing boozing antics, even in terms of actual musical arrangement there is a massive difference between the two.

I refuse to count wikipedia, which is written, often by people that have no knowledge of what they are writting. Given for 8 months on wiki entry claimed Kylie Minogue is the talented older sister of Micheal Jackson. I think with that I just prooved that wikipedia's validity is easily compromised.

Metal archives may rarely mess up, but I think the artists and record labels... tend to have a bit more knowledge about what they are making then a community run website. I can happily trudge through Kerrang(Phil Alexander days), Metal Hammer and Terrorizer issues and pull up evidence that supports my claim. So you have 2 sources one of which is often prone to fault, the other community run, I have the bands, record labels and 3 professional magazines.

Nu-Metal, is still an evolution of metal, given no jazz, no rock, no metal, and as for the rap influence's... hello... rapmetal anyone?
Hardcore, being a genre of metal, as is... oh look thrash and death, just because it doesn't have metal at the end doesn't make it any less metal.

No that Trivium statement is true, the band are despised by the metal community at large and are riddled with fan boys that get so ridiculously defensive if you joke about them its untrue. And I call Trivium crap, because I'm yet to hear an original peice of music from them, given they steal from Megadeth, Slayer, Kreator and Metallica.

And I already saw your first post. You like some decent bands there. smile

I don't know, maybe in America your genre's are different to over here, but given england is the country where metal originated. I think its fair to say that the genre's here hold more sway then anywhere else. Which yes maybe elitist, maybe arrogant and dismissive to say, but its true.

MM was never Gothic metal, I hear 0 Moonspell or Lacuna Coil.

Motley Crue was more Hair Metal then Hard Rock.

I never said Wiki was right, just that magazines are just as wrong when it comes to genres. I've seen Thursday, A7X, and Trivium all on Metal Hammer. Kerrang has MCR and crap, so unless this didn't happen in the Phil Alexander days they aren't that right as well. Bands can't always be trusted in know what genre they play, I bet Trivium think they play Metal, when it's just shitty metalcore.

Nu-Metal isn't a evolution of metal, it Rock that takes parts here and there.
Korn uses rap elements as well as metal. Slipknot have Jazzy bass lines and also use metal.

Hardcore is a genre of Punk, not metal.

Yes, everyone knows Trivium suck the balls for stealing riffs and more from real metal bands.

Ergo rap-metal is still a form of metal, that happens to feature rap and given metal and rap used to be linked with one another anyway, it makes it a valid metal genre.

And in the Phil Alexander days (he's the old editor), it was actually about metal, from the Wildhearts to Maiden to Hatebreed. And actually, Trivium is considered to be a thrash metal band... admittidly shitty thrash metal, but still thrash metal.

And so what your saying is, metal isn't allowed to grow up, change or become different in anyway, because then it stops being metal? Thats effectively what you are saying, its called nu-metal, because its just that, a new variant of metal, if it was rock, it'd be called 'nu-rock' not nu-metal. And Hardcore, is what bands like Hatebreed and Killswitch Engage are. I know there is a genre called 'hardcore punk' but there is also a genre of metal called hardcore... emotive hardcore infact, which is actually where the term emo comes from. I've been through this before, again, I can get the people to back me up here. As for bands not knowing what they are playing? Isn't that like saying someone who composes a symphony doesn't know what they are doing?

Hardcore is a sub genre of punk.

KS and Hatebreed are both metalcore bands.

Trivium is only not like every other metalcore band because of the riffs they steal, without them it's just metalcore.

Nu-Metal is a term and should be seem as nothing more. Happyhardcore is techno music, just because the word hardcore is in there, doesn't mean it's a form of hardcore music, same goes for Metalcore and Nu-Metal.

People in bands are just as human as me and you, they can be wrong.

Metal can change, yeah no problem there. In Flames and Dark Tranquillity back in the 90's mixed Death Metal with Power metal to make Moldic Death Metal. That was a change, but if the band makes a sound that is more, Rock or hardcore then Metal, then it really isn't a change for metal, just a change in music over all.

Hadcore Punk is a sub genre of Punk
Hardcore is what 'Metalcore' had been called upto ohhhh about to years ago. Again, I have the resources to prove this, and know the people that were around when it was called hardcore. I've got plenty of proof and evidence I can pull up in my favour.

And no, without the riffs they steal, Trivium is just Matt Heaffy (or however you spell it) moaning about boats, rudders and strange mountains. Trivium are infact Thrash Metal, they play only thrash riffs, they sing in a style reminiscent of Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield. As far as I know, the metal community at large agrees with me... I can happily go around gaia, and fish testimonials as to genre they are. If thats not enough, I'll refer to official resources.

No, Nu-Metal is a form of metal, like it or not, its a mixture of rap metal and dance. And hardcore is as I've been trying to say a descriptive term of the pure essence of that music style, hence why hardcore exists in techno (btw happyhardcore is a form of acid house not techno) and in metal. Again, I'll be happy to gather up the resources to prove I'm right.

Yes they can, but I do think the band knows more about the music they are making then the fans. After all, look what happens when the fans are left to classify music, you end up with the mess of genre's that are death and black metal, where if a bass line is played 3/4 of a second faster its a new genre. The bands and the record labels... contrary to popular belief know what they are taking about (ok, discounting marketing and PR departments). They are payed professionals.

That didn't even make sense. Thats like saying early 90's rap, you know like say public enemy, that would have electric guitar solo's and other metal orientated themes, were metal and not rap, I don't know, maybe in the US. and Romania but here in the UK, you know pretty much the alternative music capital of the world, then things are exactly as I've said they are. Frankly, where I stand, people that need to classify, re-classify and sub-divide music can choke on their genre's (no offense just a matter of opinion surrounding the elitism of some aspects of alt. culture.) The fact is, people have over complicated music, I mean, what is hard rock but metal? people can't seem to decide what one band is, for example, Led Zep and Black Sabbath, were the original metal bands, no denying it, everyone knows it, yet people argue that they are hard rock. Why? after about 47 years, who are these people to reclassify the bands that made the foundation of metal. Its like when Lars Ulrich coined the phrase NWOBHM, firstly, why is an American commenting on British heavy metal, and given he was playing with his toys when Iron Maiden and the other supposed 'NWOBHM' bands were playing and touring. He had no right to pass that comment and give birth to a genre, that most bands that classified as such, absolutely hate the name of.

As it stands in my mind, I know I'm right, in your mind you know your right, we both have sources to prove our cases, so we may as well drop it now, we're not going to convince each other and last time I had this debate with someone, the guild turned into a battle ground of apocalyptic proportions.
