I've heard both sides of the story and originally I thought that emo stood for 'super emotional flits with really tight pants' ( which means 'emotive hardcore' in my world) but now people are saying "emotional hardcore'.
Are these people ******** or actually right?

Nope it is note emotional hardcore, its emotive hardcore (emotional implies inward facing emotive, outward implies expressing your emotions) it started out as a music genre (though which genre emotive hardcore actually is seems to be an issue of great contention between most people over 20 and most under.)

The style evolved into its own thing, which got adopted by others, changed an altered around, then came the goth rejects with ghey a** make up and and stupid bouffant hair styles that slowly merged with the emo 'scene' (fashion followers is what scene means here) to create the false modern interpretation of the actual emo culture. Bands like MCR, Funeral for a Friend and others of that ilk, soon got lumped as being emo. (which in my theory is, every band of a specific genre that was whiney and sucks got labelled as emo) Creating the modern interpretation of emo we all know and hate with a burning passion. smile

Thats my take on it anyway.

Emotive Hardcore.

Started in the underground DC area around 1985-86.

Rites of Spring, composed of members of popular punk rock bands.

Spawed emo, post emo, and hardcore by 1993.

Genre died about 1997.

Now the word is abused by "suicidal" 14 year olds that "hate" their life.

Ok.. I will just tell you
that "emo" means to me.

Emo is a label for a person
with a bad past, or emotional trauma.
It doesn't have to be that though.

Someone who shows emotions.
Has an opinion.
Hides from the world, but comes out strong
when needed.
Can identify when to have fun and when
to be serious.
Does not let others get to them.
Creative in many ways.
different in various ways,
does not follow other easily.

That's just what I think though.
There is more.. I am just too lazy to type it. >.<

I'm 20 years old and I'm in the guild... does it actually matter?

There are many people who take "emo" and put it towards suicidal teeny-boppers, cutters, and people who are drab 24/7. People who do that have a very warped impression of emo.
My opinion: Emo is a style of music that people have taken and made into a lifestyle, so to say. Same with punk, it wasn't always mo-hawks and studded jackets, but with any type of music people take it and make a style out of it. Emo nowadays are people who are in touch with there emotions (whether they wear them on there sleeves or privately display them, they are still acknowledging they exist and act upon them.) Emo is also about the "hair that ate my face" and mostly uber skinny people. It's a fashion trend that will eventually die out, like most things.
