Seeing the thief's expression to him, the king couldn't help but chuckle. He seemed lively, even for being just woken up. "My, no need to move so quickly. I've just come to ask you a few questions, if I may." In truth, the king had been thinking on what to do with the strange boy in his castle since he had arrived. His involvement and strange connection with his daughter complicated matters. Surely if the king sentenced him, Cassandra would be furious. And he couldn't have his daughter angry, especially with the things he had planned for her. They needed to be on good terms, and speaking to one another.
That made his treatment of the boy his priority. Though, to him, the boy was an enigma. And he planned to discover just what was lingering in his castle. But first he wanted to set his records straight.
The king took a seat in the chair by the doorway, deciding it best not to take the one by his bedside. Perhaps distance would be a good idea at the moment. The boy seemed jumpy. "Well, I suppose first thing is first. Who are you, young man? I don't believe I have seen you in my years as king."

Kaine
Kaine did not respond at first, thinking over what the King was saying and trying to get over the fact that he was not yet slapped in manacles and tossed in the dungeon. When his highness chose to keep his distance, Kaine relaxed a bit, but was still on edge with him there in the first place.
Kaine looked the powerful, old man over, finally coming to the conclusion that he was not a threat at the moment, and answered his question simply. "Kaine." He paused, unsure of how to continue, but it sounded like he wanted more than just a first name. Well, if there was anytime to use his full birth name, now was it. "Previously... Prince Kainus of the kingdom of Lupis. I have been living in the woods most of my life, and therefore my face is unfamiliar."

The king's eyes widened at the response he was given. He didn't seem to have much of a royal air about him, although he hhad said he lived in the forest most of his life. He supposed that could explain it. "Former prince, you say. Interesting... And I haven't heard of the kingdom of Lupis in a long time.... Our communications were strangely severed, actually..."
The king trailed off, lost in thought again. He was still deciding on the fate of the boy, and the fate of his daughter as well. Hearing the boy was a former prince changed things a bit, but he needed to stand firm. Part of him wondered if his daughter had known about this, and if so, why had such a detail not been brought to his attention sooner? Gathering information about a kingdom lost to him would be most helpful. But he decided to get onto that later. At the moment, the king had business to discuss. "Well, I have a proposition for you, if you don't mind." He said after a few moments of silence. "I've decided to drop whatever charges against you. You're free to leave once you see fit. However, I do ask if you could do one small thing for me." The king paused again, looking at the boy seriously. He was unsure what his daughter would do upon hearing this, but he couldn't think about that. It was for the good of the kingdom, after all. "Princess Cassandra is to meet with the Prince of Haundelle as soon as she possibly can. However, since you seem knowledgable on the forest, I was hoping you wouldn't mind being her escort? I will provide supplies for the trip and even payment for the escort, if you would like."

Kaine
Kaine's expression darkened when his majesty mentioned the severed communications, knowing the reason in a painful memory. that incident had ruined his life and nearly taken it along with everyone else's.
His gaze lifted in surprise at the King's next words. Was he joking? No. He wasn't! The King was dropping the charges? All of them? "E-escort? Cass- er, the Princess?" It seemed like such a small favor in comparison to the bounty he had racked up. "Yeah... yes sir, I can do that." He answered, remembering he was in the presence of royalty. "Th-than you sir." He said with a bow, though he was still sitting in the bed.
He had thought for sure the King was here to charge him and arrest him, but instead, the man gave him his freedom and a job that he was willing to pay for! Kained checked himself, wondering if he was still dreaming in feverish delusions. Nope, awake. This all seemed to good to be true.

The king beamed at Kaine as he stood once more, straightening out his dress robes as he did so. Although he didn't show it, he was surprised by the boy's willingness to escort his daughter. There was a part of the arrangement he wasn't going to tell either of them, much less his daughter. No way could this plan fail. The entire kingdom depended on it. The king's eyes strayed to the window for a moment, looking beyond the walls of his castle to the tops of the trees in the forest. Far beyond that deadly forest was a kingdom ready to wage war. Unless their requirements were met, they would attack.
Pushing his thoughts away, the king returned his gaze on Kaine once more. "I'll arrange for some breakfast to be sent for you. I'm sure Princess Cassandra will be in to check on you once she wakes. If you wouldn't mind, don't tell her she is to be meeting with the prince. Just the kingdom will do." He said before heading towards the door to leave. Before he fully shut it, the king popped his head back inside the room. "Ah, and do take care on your trip. I have heard there's a strange beast lurking around in the forest." He added before leaving him in peace.
On the way back, he played the conversation over in his mind. Everything seemed so easy. The thief didn't even question him, to his relief. The king made his way back to the throne room and sat comfortably on the plush cushion, feeling more relieved than he had in days. He felt like he could finally relax once more. Allowing himself a moment to become more comfortable and less straight backed, he straightened back up and called for the guards to inform them of the situation.
{o.o.c. Most likely editing this a little later to include Cassie in the post! Unless I don't get to it and you see this, feel free to reply unless there isn't enough to go on!~
EDIT: I don't think I'm going to get to adding Cassie until.... tomorrow afternoonish. I've been busy studying my butt off for finals this week x.x And my last is tomorrow morning so after that I'm free for anything! } I am soo sorry I haven't posted in a while. Just came back from a vacation and went straight to work. Your posts are fine, but if you feel like adding more feel free. I will try to post a reply tonight, if not, you can expect one no later than friday. I'm still trying to unpack and everything is a little bit crazy, but I still wanna play. ((By thee way, I get the slightest feeling that the king has something dubious up his sleeve, but I might be wrong. Am I wrong? I dunno... I'm probably wrong lol))
No problems!~ I understand people get busy, I've been busy myself lately. I was just wanting to make sure the post was okay because I just had a random nagging feeling I didn't write enough, I'm not sure why x.x By the way, happy belated birthday ^^

Kaine
The promise of breakfast made Kaine's stomach gurgle with anticipation, but he was more concerned about where Cassie was. She had been with him last night before he had fallen asleep, but where was she now. She was obviously not happy being a princess, and the whole reason she had run off was to get away from arranged marriages. Yet here he was, agreeing to escort her to an arranged marriage just to be absolved of all his crimes and bounties? He was to keep the true purpose of the trip through the forest a secret from her.
He fought in his mind, the one side wanting to help Cassie free herself from the bonds of royalty and propriety, the other side urging him to accept the deal and be a free man. Who was Cassandra to him anyway? A burden. Another mouth to feed. ... A friend, the first and only he had made since the crumbling of his kingdom. He sat there, alone now that the king had left him, the comment about the beast in the woods lost on him. He sat, pondering his fate, and the fate of Cassie, which he now held in the palm of his hand.
Japanesestarfire Thanks for the birthday wish! It means a lot to me. biggrin And I totally called it in my head! The king has something up his sleeve! Also, I hope you do well with finals! You can do it! I believe in you!

❀The sound of a door opening and shutting awoke Cassie from her slumber. Oh no... I didn't mean to fall asleep! Her eyes widened realizing she hadn't thought of anything to help Kaine before passing out. What was she going to do? Surely her father would want to see the both of them. Would her father punish Kaine? Cassie's thoughts lingered on him a moment. She had to go see him to see how he was feeling. Her mind made up, Cassie sat up and swung her legs out of bed, only to see three of her maids standing by her doorway. Seeing the princess was awake, the one on the left stepped forward, ready to help her. A frown tugged at Cassie's mouth. It wasn't as if she couldn't dress or bathe herself. Still, she knew it couldn't be helped. It was what they were there for, and she had already quite rudely sent them away the night before. Sighing, she got out of bed and allowed the maids to do their jobs.
Surprisingly the dressing didn't take as long as she expected. Cassie glanced down at the elaborate royal blue sequined gown. She wanted a simpler dress, but the maids insisted on the one she was currently wearing. She waited until the last maid left her chambers to adjust her dress so it was a bit more comfortable, then slipped out. Her first destination was to see Kaine, of course. As she headed towards the healer's room, she passed a servant carrying a covered tray. Seeing the princess, the servant stopped and curtsied out of respect. Cassie dipped her head in acknowledgement, then looked at the tray questioningly. It wasn't normal to see someone carrying food down the halls. Usually everyone gathered in a dining hall. Silently the servant handed off the tray to Cassie. "Surely you're going to visit your guest? This is for him." He said simply before heading back towards the kitchens. Deciding not to think of it much, Cassie held tightly to the tray and continued down the hall.
When she approached the healer's room, she knocked once before slowly entering, doing her best not to trip on her gown or spill the food. "Are you awake? I brought you some breakfast."
{o.o.c. Thank you! biggrin I actually just finished my last final yesterday. Did you know 7 am is wayyy too early to do math? x.x }

Kaine was deep in thought, sitting there alone in the healer's room. There was one or two of the healers idling about, fixing beds and opening shutters to let in the sunlight, but Kaine hardly noticed. A knock came to the door and he looked up as it opened and deposited Cassie. The very person he had been thinking about. He smiled at her, but inside, he was still unsure of what to do concerning her.
"I am awake." He answered, though she could have probably come to that conclusion herself. He looked at the tray of food and his stomach promptly gurgled. "Thank you." He said, pushing himself up straighter in his sitting position. He lingered on a thought, wondering what exactly he should tell her. "Cassie, your father... He told me that he would give me a full pardon of all my crimes in the kingdom..." he began, pausing to try and figure out how best to say what was to come next. How would she react to the news of him agreeing to become the delivery boy so that she may meet and possibly end up having to wed this man from another kingdom she had never met before?

❀ The news about her father pardoning Kaine for his crimes both puzzled and excited her. It seemed she didn't have to speak or try to convince him at all. Although she couldn't figure out why he had without any prompting from outside sources. The only thing she could think of was if sir Gustav had said something to him, or if their report on her disappearance and lack of any harm to her swayed his judgement. Still, she was happy he had decided to waive the fines and punishments. "That's great!" She said with a smile, cutting him off. She knew it would be rude, but she was happy for him. He would get freedom. She supposed if anyone in this room should, it would be him. The thought made her smile fall a bit.
Setting the tray down on the table next to Kaine's bed for him to take, Cassie reclaimed the seat next to the bed and glanced out the window, her head full of thoughts. When would he leave? Would he go back to the forest? She wondered if she could visit from time to time. If he would want, anyway. Although she wasn't entirely sure she would be able to make it out of the castle any time soon. Surely her father would up the guards and security around the city. Another thought occurred to her, one she decided she would ask. "Did my father want you to do anything? Join the guard perhaps? It seems like something he would ask, you've proven yourself capable of defending yourself, after all." She commented, wondering if her father had a hidden motive for letting Kaine go free. She knew he would want something, she just wasn't sure what.
{o.o.c. Thanks smile I haven't gotten the chance to look at my grade yet so I'm not sure how I did though... I think I did well, surprisingly. I stink at math haha. }

❀Kaine's answer surprised her, but at the same time, it really didn't. "Makes sense..." She mumbled, more to herself than to him, and let her gaze fall to her lap. Leave it to her father to use Kaine and get what he wanted from his daughter. Reasons for this particular marriage candidate was unknown to her though. She'd already seen every prince from the kingdoms surrounding them, and she'd turned them all down. Now this?
Still, she knew she had to do it. There was no way around it anymore after all. At least her father had the decency to let her travel with someone she liked and trusted. The thought of traveling with Gustav or any of her father's trusted men made her frown. Her gaze slid back up to Kaine again. At least he was able to retain his freedom. She most certainly wouldn't have wanted him trapped inside the confines of the kingdom, or worse, inside the prisons. Wasn't making sure he didn't succumb to that fate what she had been stressing over since they got there?
Sighing, she decided not to argue or make a fuss. There certainly was no way out of it. If she escaped in the forest or did anything to try and get out of the arrangement, surely her father would change his mind on giving Kaine freedom. And that was something she didn't want to do. "Well, I'm happy my father decided to let you go free." She said softly, giving him a tiny halfhearted smile. She was happy for him, just the news of the escort and possible engagement hit her hard. Though, she supposed it did explain why her maids made a fuss about dressing her up that morning. As much as she would have preferred they didn't. Doing her hair up was one thing, but a heavy corseted dress wasn't as easy to move around in, especially for long distances. The thoughts brought her to her next question. "Did my father say when you were to take me?"

Kaine looked up from his food when he heard her mumble. He did not want her to be upset, but he did not want to deceive her. He only hoped that he would not be punished for defying the words of the King, who had made it clear that he did not want his daughter to know the reason for the trip. But how was he expected to keep it a secret? Did the king think Cassie was stupid? That she would not figure out or question the reason for a trip into the forest? He had to have known she would have found out one way or another.
When she spoke again, he felt a pang of guilt strike him, fr some reason. Hearing her say that she was happy for his freedom, when she was once again a prisoner here at the castle was saddening. He grabbed a bit of egg, finding his appetite again, and ate it as she asked her next question. He swallowed and shook his head, "He only said when I was well enough. I don't remember if there was a specific date." he answered honestly. "Cassie? Could you... Could you refrain from letting your father know I told you this. He didn't want me to say anything." He felt like a coward. A sniveling child caught in a lie and begging his sister not to tell on him. He felt childish and weak, but what else could he do? She had worked so hard to get him this pardon, he was sure, that going against the king and getting thrown in prison anyway seemed like a slap in the face to her.

❀At Kaine's request, Cassie simply nodded. "Of course. Your secret is safe with me." She answered, a hint of amusement in her voice. Although things seemed bleak for her, she wasn't about to ruin anything for him. After all, he had freedom. She wasn't about to mess that up for him. Instead of dwelling on her future, she decided she needed to plan something in order to somehow have a better life than to feel prisoner in one castle or another. Her mind started swirling with ideas and partially formed plans. She knew if anything, she was going to leave Kaine out of it. His ignorance to her ideas could save him from being hunted by her father's men and questioned, or worse.
A knock on the door drew her out of her thoughts and she glanced over to see one of her maids come in with a tea tray and a pair of cups. A tiny smile formed on her face. At least they were thinking of the both of them, not just her. The maid set the tray on the table next to the bed before leaving. "So I suppose you'll let me know when we are to leave. In the meantime, I suppose I could show you some places around here that would maybe interest you while you're here recovering. How are you feeling by the way?" She asked as she stirred a bit of sugar into her teacup. Beyond what he had shown her in the forest, Cassie actually wasn't sure what all Kaine would like. Her only idea was her gardens. It was the closest to nature she ever had until she fled to the forest, and it was bursting with life. Nothing compared to his, but she supposed it was just as nice.
