What I've got in mind would sort of be like... an unstoppable spirit or demon that kept attacking the party, actually trying to kill them, repeatedly throughout their adventure... for the sole purpose of continually testing their worthiness to be the heroes and help get them the combat experience they need. If they fail, they just weren't good enough, and it's better for the world to not rely on the weak. ^^
