The best part of beating a Pokémon game with one pokémon is how ridiculously overpowered you are after a while. Crushing my rival in Crystal with a good twenty levels on his strongest pokémon was extremely satisfying. >D
Of course, he won't admit this and is convinced he lost because he doesn't love his pokémon enough, BUT STILL.

That is obviously the case, seeing as how you must have a female pokemon at the moment and the two of you make very intense love.

I take a similar approach, but I make sure I have one backup that is close to my strongest, just in case they get a lucky super effective crit. I think there should be a pokemon game where it recognizes how you raise your pokemon, and if you use them just as battle machines and catch the other ones just to have them in the pokedex it should recognize that you don't love them and your rival should be the opposite of what you do.
