Got the Ethics paper done... This is what I wrote, can someone tell me how many words it is? I don't have a word counter on my comp...:
This recent article is about technology's responce to the elderly's want to be independent, and their want to remain in their own home longer. For a long time, once the elderly begin to become more and more dependent and eventually can not live alone(or with only their spouse), they were brought to homes. With this new computer system that monitors the elderly in their homes, they can live there years longer than they would have traditionally. They can still have the feeling of independance while still being monitored, and can still live in a place they value. In an Utilitarianistic and Hedonistic view, this is a good thing. Yet some people might not want something like this installed in their homes. The article also brings up another interesting aspect; installing monitoring devices in every home. This could be useful, and it could also be damaging. I will explore the various pros and cons of home monitoring in the hypothetical situation that there is a monitoring system in every household. Having a computerized monitoring system in every household would prove to be beneficial to many. Particular people who would most likely approve of this would be the elderly, mothers who have small children, and people who are seriously ill or mentally compromised. With this system, the computer would remind the person that they should be taking their medication, will record what food the person is eating, will alert nearby family if the doors leading outside were opened when they shouldn't be, will also alert family if the person had fallen, and can call the person's physician in the event that the person is not sleeping correctly or is spending too much or too little time in the bathroom. It provides a painless and nearly effortless way for your physician to make sure you are keeping up with what the doctor had told you to do. For older people, of whom most are Traditionalists, they value the family more, and would like to remain close to things like their home and belongings. From what the article states, home monitoring is also considerably cheaper than a nursing home. There are many reasons why a person would refuse something like this in their home. People might feel like their right to privacy is being violated. People who normally do not need monitoring and elderly who believe they are not at risk might feel that way. Also, due to the information being put into a computer, it is very easy to imagine someone being able to hack into your medical records. On that note, using this system means that someone else other than your family and physician has access to your information as well; the company that makes the monitoring systems. This means your confidentiality could be at higher risk. For a younger person, this could mean whether they can get a job or not if companies buy your information and look at it beforehand; and they might not be able to get insurance or loans. Weighing the pros and cons of home monitoring, I believe that I would not like a computerized system installed in my home like that. However I do encourage such an action for those who are at greater risk of getting hurt or needing medical assistance. The system should be used for elderly, special needs, and for young families with small children. If practicing medical utility, this monitoring system sounds like a good idea.
