Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She sighed when she realized what he was planning on doing. Well, it was his choice. Grabbing a pillow from the bed as well as an extra blanket, she took it over to him. "Here." she set them down besides him. She wasn't about to let him sleep on the floor without anything. Going back to her own bed, she knew that Ebony would leave for the night.. she always went hunting then. Biting her lip, she then lay down before crawling under the sheets and blankets until all that was visible was her head resting on a pillow. Looking at the ceiling, she didn't know how long it would take her to fall asleep.. maybe she wouldn't even sleep at all.. that had happened more than once before. It still was rather strange to have someone else in her room after so long..

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Brandon watched as Violetta brought a blanket and pillow over to him. He smiled his thanks and grabbed them before laying them out. Setting the pillow down next to him, he laid on his side, facing her. After draping the blanket over himself, he closed his eyes. Sleep, however, was as evasive as always.
As he lay there in the darkness, hearing nothing but the sound of his own breathing and heartbeat, he could almost imagine that he was completely alone, in his own little world where nothing could hurt him. But he knew it wasn't true. The already-starting pain in his hip and shoulder where they pressed against the floor reminded him of that. He would never escape, never be free. He would never see his parents again, never know what it was like to be able to wake up in the morning and be free to do what you wanted. Then again, Violetta had given him the freedom, sometimes, and he hadn't taken it. Had he been a slave too long? Had he really forgotten how to live as a free man? Despite how much he tried to tell himself otherwise, the terrifying and overwhelming answer kept coming back to him. Yes.

Biting her lip, she then rolled over onto her side, feeling bad for Brandon but he was too stubborn to go to his own room and sleep on an actual bed. Closing her eyes, she sighed softly. It wasn't long before she feel asleep even though she fought against it. With her injury and all that had happened today, it was surprising she hadn't passed out earlier. Her breathing became slow and even, almost silent as well. Violetta's dreams were empty though she wouldn't have been surprised if she had a nightmare after seeing James today. She could only hope he wouldn't come back tomorrow. Sure, her father had promised her he wouldn't be.. but you never knew with James...

Brandon opened his eyes again, looking up at the bed. His mistress's form was still and he guessed she had fallen asleep. He couldn't hear her breathing from where he lay but he guessed it would have been slow and even. Closing his eyes again, he lay awake for many hours before he managed to doze off, only to jolt awake again only half an hour later. He'd been dreaming that he was being chased by one of his previous master's fighting dogs. He had felt its breath on the backs of his legs, the pant legs torn away already by the dog's snapping jaws. As he lay there in the darkness of very early morning, he shuddered at the memory and tried desperately to push it away. He succeeded but failed to fall back asleep.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta's dream had taken a wrong turn in the end. Yes, James had appeared in one of them.. but the horrifying thing was that he had been Brandon at first. It was like being stabbed in the heart all over again. She woke up a while after Brandon did and rubbed her temples before she looked around the dim room. Seeing that Brandon was awake, she smiled a little bit as her bangs fell over her green eye. "Good morning." she told him. It looked like he had barely gotten any sleep though. Shaking her head at him, she slowly got up. "Get some more sleep if you want." she gestured over at her bed, since she was planning on taking a warm bath, he could sleep there for now. It would be a whole lot more comfortable than the bed. Grabbing a random dress from her closet as well as a few other things, she then stepped into the bathroom and was about to lock the door but she realized that she had never asked for a lock.
There was a lock on the door to her room but that was it. Sighing, her only choice was to trust him. Looking at the door hesitantly for a moment, she then began to fill the tub with hot water the same way she had done it last time. It took a good fifteen to twenty minutes but after that, she bit her lip. Well, she hadn't done that all for nothing right? After another moment of hesitation she slipped out of her clothes before going into the warm water.

When Violetta awoke, Brandon simply watched her, not making a sound, not even moving. Yet, somehow, she knew he was awake. She must have noticed that his eyes were open. When she bid him good morning, he simply blinked. He was too tired for pleasantries, even if he did talk. He didn't know how much sleep he'd gotten last night but it hadn't been much and it had been light, at best. His nightmare hadn't helped either. He might as well not have slept at all. That's what it felt like anyway. Did you know that in some places, they use lack of sleep as a torture device? He grimaced at the fact that one of his fellow slaves had once told him a few masters ago. Yeah, they tie the person to the chair and keep them from falling asleep. He could believe it was used for torture. He himself often felt tortured by his lack of sleep. It wasn't fair.
When Violetta told him to get more sleep if he wanted, he again just blinked. He knew he wouldn't get anymore sleep, even if he tried. As he lay there, watching her, she grabbed a dress from her closet as well as a few other things he couldn't see because she blocked his view. He yawned largely as she stepped into the bathroom and closed the door after her. She didn't have to worry about any unexpected visitors. He wasn't interested in her, not like that. Though, he knew that if some other slaves he'd known were in his position, they would have taken advantage of their mistress's vulnerability. But he wasn't like that. He didn't want to harm Violetta nor scare her. He was there to serve and protect her and that was what he planned to do. So, with a sigh, he pushed back his blanket and folded it neatly, placing it beside the pillow, before walking over to Violetta's bed and making it up again.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

It was a good hour before she came out again, fully dressed. Seeing that her bed was made, she blinked. She was so used to making it on her own that it took her a moment to realize who had done it and why. "Thanks.." she said in a low voice before she pulled her hair back. She was wearing a white dress that had long sleeves. It was simply, just like the red one but she liked it. "I told you I would take you to the marketplace.. we can do that later today.. after breakfast." oh she remembered what the doctor had said but there was no way she was staying cooped up in her room. She didn't want to take it easy.. and hopefully Brandon had forgotten about yesterday's incident. Biting her lip, she opened the door before headed for the stairs, guessing that he would follow since he probably was hungry. Having breakfast with her father didn't seem like a bad idea.. she just hoped he wouldn't have a problem with Brandon joining them.

When Violetta didn't come out after a while, Brandon looked around, not entirely sure what to do to occupy his time. After a minute, he checked on the kittens, watching them for a little while before growing bored and returning back to his "bed". Sitting beside his blanket and pillow, he closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall. When Violetta finally did come out, he lifted his head, opened his eyes and stood up.
At her thanks, he nodded. Her thanks wasn't necessary -he was only a slave after all- but it was welcomed. Glancing down at the dress, he found he approved, not that she needed his approval anyway. He just thought she looked better in simple dresses rather than the fancy, extravagant ones he was sure she was sometimes forced to wear.
When she said she was taking him to the marketplace, he frowned, though his frown did relax at the mention of his breakfast. His stomach ached, as if it suddenly realized it was empty. He hadn't forgotten about Violetta's incident yesterday but, since he couldn't fight her on the matter, he decided he would do his best to make sure she did take it nice and easy... after breakfast. Wordlessly, he followed her out of the room.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Biting her lip as she walked down the stairs, she kept one hand against the stone wall just in case. She really didn't want to go tumbling down the stairs head first. Violetta had noticed Brandon's frown when she mentioned the marketplace but it didn't look like he was going to stop her. The candles that lit the staircase were rather nice.. she had barely even paid any attention to them until now. For a moment, she paused but then her stomach growled quietly, reminding her where she was headed.
It wasn't long before she entered the dining room, smelling the food down the hall. There would no doubt be eggs, fruit, various juices and tea, among other things that she couldn't quite remember. It had been a while since she had last eaten breakfast with anyone in the dining room or even on her own. Taking in a deep breath, she then looked into the room, wondering if her father was going to be there.

Brandon followed after Violetta like the good little slave he was. That sound even more patronizing than when his previous master had said. As they walked, he didn't miss the fact that she kept one hand against the wall. Quickening his pace, he kept only a step behind her so if she fell, he could catch her.
When she paused, he did the same before his ears caught a quiet sound. It took him a moment to realize it was the sound of a stomach growling, a stomach which was not his. He blinked in surprise before following after her as she set off again. His own stomach ached with hunger but it remained silent. Good thing too. In the shop, slaves were beaten if their stomach made any kind of sound. It was bad for business after all.
When they entered the dining room, he caught the smell of eggs, some kind of fruit and other things he couldn't quite place. It had been quite a while since a master her requested his presence, spoken or unspoken, with them in the dining room. He was sure that was the worst of jobs, especially in the morning. Watching a master stuff themselves with food while they are forced to stand back and watch.
Pushing the thoughts away, he looked across the dining room in time to see Violetta's father look up from his breakfast. The surprise was evident on the man's face.

"Violetta? What are you doing here?"

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

Violetta blinked when her father spoke up. "Am I not supposed to be here?" she asked slowly as she stood behind a chair. "I thought I would come down to eat breakfast." she said softly, wondering if he didn't want her here or if he was expecting someone else to join him. Sometimes people would come for breakfast but it was usually for business, nothing else. When her mother had been around.. well things had been a bit more lively and the house was definitely a whole lot happier than it was now.
"I was hoping Brandon could join us as well." she said before looking over her shoulder at him. She didn't want to fight her father this earlier in the morning but if Brandon wasn't allowed to eat here, then she wouldn't either.. simple as that. Even if she had hit her head, she still was stubborn as ever before.

Her father's eyes widened and he shook his head. "No, no. Of course you're welcome here. It's just, I'm surprised, that's all. I can't recall you ever coming down to join me for breakfast." At least, not since her mother had died. When his wife had been alive, this place had been like paradise. At least, it had been for him. Everything had been perfect. The place had been absolutely gorgeous and everyone was happier than they were now. Even the slaves! Everyone had liked his wife. She had been the very spirit of this place.
However, when she said she was hoping the slave could join as well, he frowned, and he noticed the slave himself did too. Slaves did not sit and eat at their master's table. It just wasn't done. It appeared the only one in the room that didn't know that was Violetta. "Darling," he said gently but firmly. "he is a slave. Slaves eat in their dining hall. The only purpose they have in ours is to serve." She may very well have been stubborn but she got that from her father.

She was welcome here and yet her companion, her father had called him that at first, wasn't. She leaned against the chair and let him finish as she lowered her head. "He is my companion." she told him, preferring that word over slave. They were humans after all, just like them. "But, very well. I hope you can excuse me. My hunger seems to have disappeared." she told him, looking at him across the table before she turned around and walked out.
Brandon could go ahead and eat, but she decided not to. Of course her father could very well call after her but she wasn't going back. A few hours without food wouldn't kill her after all. Her footsteps echoed through the hall as she continued to walk, not really going in a specific direction except away from the dining room.

Brandon knew the moment the master had started to speak how this would play out. He sighed quietly to himself, watching as Violetta tried to defend his rights, even though he didn't have any. He was a slave, no more than property, like an animal. Couldn't she understand that? He mentally groaned as she said her hunger had disappeared before turning and walking out of the dining hall. Shaking his head, he cast a sympathetic glance at the master before following after her. Her father's distress was obvious. He hadn't meant to upset her. He'd just been stating a fact. Slaves did not eat at their master's table.
Quickening his pace to catch up with her, Brandon gently grabbed her arm, forcing her to a stop. He knew a few hours without food wouldn't kill her but it wasn't good for her. She was weak enough as it was and she needed nourishment, especially with her head injury. Placing his other hand on her opposite shoulder, he turned her around back towards the dining room and gently pushed her along in that direction.

Feeling a hand against her arm, she looked over her shoulder to find that it was Brandon. What was he doing? Realizing that he was turning her around to walk back down to the dining room, she protested. "No, this isn't happening again." she told him as she managed to get a hold of a doorknob and stayed put. "Eat if you want, but I'm not going to." looking up at him with a rebelious look in her eyes, she then pulled her arm from his grip. "Don't take me back, Brandon." she told him, not wanting to be pushed around like a child. She had made her decision and she didn't want him to go around changing it.
"You already brought me back home." she reminded him. He had done his 'good' deed for the month or year. Even if he somehow did manage to get her back and sit down in the dining room, she wouldn't eat much.. just drag time until her father was done and then she could leave.
