The warm smell of smoke mixed with the cold air to create an odd mixture of sensations, though not an unfamiliar one. She'd experienced it not long ago when she extinguished her own fire. It seemed this person was no stranger to being, themselves, a stranger. She observed calmly as he emerged behind her and drew his weapon. He looked a bit unsteady, but he was much larger than she was and likely much older physically. Given his stature and comfort moving through the forest, she wasn't confident she would win in a straight fight. Best to de-escalate.

"Thank you for staying your blade. Your concern is appropriate," she spoke, keeping her voice level and remaining still. Experience had taught her that remaining calm in tense situations was a good way to get out alive. "I was investigating this region when I noticed your camp. I approached with the intention to trade for any information you might have. If you would prefer me to leave, I shall do so."

"I have some minor medical training and the ability to hunt," she added, sounding as though it were almost an afterthought.

Canto hopped around to look at Yokogara. It tilted its head and ruffled its feathers, filling the air with a light tinkling sound. With empty metallic eyes it stared at the young man. The bird-shaped spirit made no move to leave Meissa's head, or even to track Yokogara's movements.

The way she was standing wasn't especially comfortable. She was mildly concerned at how close he was to cutting her cloak or her backpack, but preferred either of those to being cut herself.

Yoko didn't take kindly to people he wasn't familiar with. He was expecting her to throw up some fight, or even get angry, but she stayed calm, which alleviated some of the tension in his bones. He kept his eyes trained on her, and listened as she tried to calmly speak to him, thanking him for not cutting her down, since his cautious nature was appropriate. It wasn't a kind world, so he had every right to be on edge. He would know. He kept his grip tame, trying to keep himself steady without putting too much pressure on the sheathe he was currently using as a makeshift crutch. He didn't want it to snap in twain. He listened as she explained that she was investigating the area and just happened to notice his camp. She approached with the intention of trading info, more or less. If he preferred her to leave, she would. He was considering it, since he wasn't too keen on having company, but when she added that she had some minor medical training and the ability to hunt, he withheld from saying anything. He wasn't sure what to do, but he was in need of assistance, that much was true. He didn't trust her, not yet, but trading information would be substantially useful. Possibly for both of them. He kept his guard up, the blade still close enough so he could slice her down if he had to, but then he noticed the weird bird like thing on her head. Now that he was actually paying attention to it, it's eyes looked metallic, robotic even. It turned to face him, but didn't make any moves to bother him or alert anyone nearby for some sort of ambush. It acted like any other curious bird would. He wondered what its deal was.

Yokogara, after a small minute of contemplation, lowered his weapon. He put it back in it's guard before backing up, limping all the same. She... didn't seem too dangerous, but that could change in an instant. He wasn't able to run away if she decided to do anything. "I...," He hesitated to ask, mostly because he's never asked for it before. It felt like a foreign word on his tongue. "...need medical assistance. My ankle is swollen." He said, his pride shivering at the sound of his own words. But he barely knew any medical training, and even worse, didn't have anything to assist his leg. He was just going to make do with what he had, but now that there was someone who potentially did, asking for help seemed to be the better option. He limped back over to the fire and took a bit of the rekindling he had procured before. He sat down on the ground and started to clear the dirt from his bonfire. Once he was able to do so, he lit the wood back up, sighing softly. It was a small and modest campsite, so having another person wouldn't be too much of a problem. The clearing was big enough.

"So... what information exactly are you trying to trade?" His voice was gruff and a little raspy, probably from lack of hydration. He didn't pay too much mind to it as he added a few more branches to the fire, hoping to get it going large enough for both of them to stay warm. He winced as he tried to adjust his legs and ended up hitting his swollen ankle. He rubbed at it with a grimace, annoyed at his predicament. If there was a chance she could help, he'd let her do it. Otherwise, he didn't exactly want to be too close to her.

Meissa maintained her calm composure as Yokogara deliberated. That brief window gave her some time to take in her surroundings more properly, which led to her realizing the campsite was fairly well put together. There was even a tent, something which she had opted to go without. Just how well made it was then struck her as odd when he confirmed his ankle was swollen.

"Very well. I'll make some preparations. Lie down and rest your leg on something so it's higher than your heart. That will help the swelling." As he started rekindling the fire, she retrieved her waterskin from her backpack. She opted to leave her backpack by the campsite and set Canto atop it to keep watch. Instantly she felt her back muscles relax and made a mental note to pack lighter until she had regained some of her endurance.

She strolled over to the river and filled her waterskin mostly full with its frigid waters. She swirled it around, dumped some more out, sealed it shut, and headed back. On the other shore, a strange creature that looked like a deer with a third antler observed the situation before quietly retreating back into the forest.

"Put this on or under your ankle," she instructed Yokogara as she set the waterskin next to him. "Keep it there until the pain from the cold starts overwhelming the pain from your injury. If you'd like I'll even make you a temporary brace later."

She sat down next to her backpack opposite him, legs crossed, and lowered the hood of her cloak. Now freed, her silver hair spilled out and danced in the breeze. She didn't seem to care much as long as it stayed away from the fire. At least, she was less concerned about her hair than she was in warming her now half-frozen hands by the fire.

"I'm trying to determine why Fades are less likely to appear here. Anything you know about this area would be useful, even if it's a myth, legend, or even third-hand stories you picked up somewhere. Unless you can think of something else, I'll offer to accelerate your healing in exchange. I also know some magic, if that's of any importance to you."

At the mention of healing, Canto perked up a bit. It looked between Meissa and Yokogara and let out a self-satisfied "hmph". The bird-like entity then proceeded to puff itself up into a spiky metallic ball of fluff. Meissa frowned.

After asking for her help, she seemed willing to do what she could for him, at least. She stated that she would make preparations, and to lie down and rest his leg on something higher than his heart. It was supposed to help with the swelling. Confused on the science behind it, he did as she instructed, albeit warily. He reached over for his backpack. It was thick enough to act as a good leg rest, so he placed it under his swollen ankle carefully and laid down, not minding the dirt at all. He watched her place her belongings down, along with her strange bird on top of it. He stared at it for a while as she went to go get water from the river. It didn't seem like a normal bird, but it acted as such. She also had blindfolds on, which confused him. Did the bird see for her? Or could she still see? Yokogara couldn't quite figure it out, but hopefully things would be clearer later. Not like he cared to keep her around, but it would be helpful to have someone else who could help hunt with him. Taking his hidden eyes off of the bird, he looked up from his laid position to watch her walkover with a waterskin in hand. She told him to put it on or under his ankle and rested it down beside him. He eyed it curiously before picking it up and resting it on top of his ankle, sighing quietly at the feeling of the cold compress against his swollen ankle. Yoko continued to pay attention as she explained that he should keep it there until the pain from the swelling became overcome by the cold. She even offered to make him a temporary brace later on. That was surprisingly nice of her, despite this being their first encounter. Now he was feeling a little bad at how aggressive he had been at the start, which, in and of itself, annoyed him. He wasn't about to apologize or it. Not yet.

Yoko laid back down in the dirt, unsure of what to do. He glanced over to the female beside him as she also sat next to the fire, sitting cross-legged and taking off her hood. He took notice of her silver hair, long and silky as if it had a slight shimmer to it from the light of the sun above. She had nice hair. He huffed, crossing his arms over his chest as he kept still, making sure not to agitate his ankle. He felt vulnerable like this, laid out in front of a stranger with an injured leg, but he didn't have much of a choice. He could have turned her away, but he was more curious as to what she wanted to discuss, as well as wanting help with his ankle. He listened as she answered his question on what information she was trying to trade, asking about why the Fades were less likely to approach this area. She didn't mind what source the information came from, but anything would seemingly be useful. She also added that unless he could think of anything else, she could offer to accelerate his healing in exchange for some info. She also knew magic, if that was any importance to him. He perked up slightly at the sound. He didn't know any magic, or anything substantial that could be considered magic. He was always interested in learning it, but he could never do such a thing. He just didn't have the talent for it. So, she was bartering with her healing abilities, just to get info out of him? Well, it's something they both needed and wanted, so he could only guess the info meant something to her. He heard a 'hmph' over where the bird was and tilted his head slightly, watching as the bird turned into a spikey ball of what looked to be metal. So, it had a mind of its own and the whole thing was metal? It definitely seemed stranger than any bird he'd ever seen, but why did it turn into a spikey ball? He watched the girl across from him frown, but decided to lay back down, confusion wafting through his mind. He'd worry about the bird later.

"Well, there are two theories from what I've heard through my travels. One is that it has something to do with those tall ice crystal things. For some reason, the Fades don't like 'em, since they radiate some sort of humming. I never believed the stories, and only noticed these ice things when I made it here." He grumpily stated, motioning around the area. Even from their position, a couple of the large crystals were visible between the thick layer of trees. He didn't know what they were, and why they kept the Fables away, but that was simply one story he had heard while traveling around. It wasn't until he got here did he actually start taking some of the stories a little more seriously. It made sense with how peaceful it seemed here, aside from other places he's been to. It was a mystery, really. "The second reason is since this is the land of the once great ice dragon, the essence it left behind in this area keeps the Fades out." He said, thinking that last one just seemed a little more farfetched. He knew of the story of this specific forest, of the ice dragon who fell here, but he didn't think it's leftover essence, especially for this long, would keep the Fables at bay. If it was, then it was an act of magic, something Yoko didn't quite understand. Well, she could do away with the knowledge he knew. It wasn't confirmed, besides the fact that they hadn't seen any fables in the area, but hey. He hoped it was of some assistance.

Meissa bowed her head slightly and crossed her arms as she listened. Yokogara's information leaned toward the fantastic, but wasn't totally outside the realm of possibility. It wasn't the most solid of leads, but it was a start, and no investigation was easy enough to solve after talking to one person.

"Hm... so I guess it does come down to the pillars. Could be they're parts of some dragon's body, or maybe remnants of its power instead of a natural phenomenon." she mused. "That hum's been bothering me too. No reason they can't all be connected on some level."

She hemmed and hawed for a few more seconds, then fell quiet. She was being perhaps a bit too circumspect about everything. She'd taken samples of the plants and land on her way here when the most obvious suspect was immediately obvious. The matter of the dragon was a bit curious, as she wasn't sure whether they actually existed in this world or not, but that was a problem for later. There was no use trying to rule out something as fantastic as that, as there were way too many things it could possibly have been and she still didn't have a good enough grasp on the common sense of this world to rule any of them out. From a certain point of view, one could argue the titanic wind spirit she'd summoned back in Ikeinasu fit many of the stereotypes of a dragon without actually being one.

"Well, you've held up your end of the bargain." She turned to her spirit companion and held her arm out. "Canto, stop being an idiot. Bring forth a light to restore and fortify."

As she spoke those last few words, the bird's mouth opened wide and it released a glowing ball of red light. The ball floated toward the young lady's fingers, up her arm, then down the other one, which was now pointed toward the fire. It eventually floated up to a point above the fire, where it settled.

"Thank you again, Canto. Rest now," she told the bird, which ruffled its feathers and crawled inside her backpack. Turning back to Yokogara, she explained: "Canto is a spirit. I'm a flesh-and-blood living human named Meissa. Stick near that light and you should heal faster. However, it's still your body doing the healing, so you'll need to keep your strength up. Got any food you can eat?"

The situation seemed to be getting less tense as the minutes ticked by, but she wasn't sure if she should rely on that. This forest dweller was certainly cooperative in as far as their exchange was concerned, but there was no guarantee he wouldn't attack at some point. The safest course of action was probably to leave as soon as possible, but she decided against it. No need to leave an injured person in the wilderness, especially if she was going to be in the area for a while afterward.

It seemed the information he offered was useful in some regard. In Yokogara's laid position, he kept his eye on her as she replied to his rather over the top answer. He listened to her weigh the options of the purpose of those ice crystals, whether they were parts from a dragon's body or remnants of power instead of something natural. Well, either way, it was definitely keeping them safe. He wasn't going to question its purpose, and honestly, if he could stay here as a home base, that would be swell, but he had to admit there was strength in numbers. Finding an actual base that had been established already would be a lot better than staying hold up by himself, whether or not the female before him decided to stay or not. She did wonder about the humming coming from them, and Yokogara thought back to when he also walked in earlier in the day. He had also felt the humming, but it hadn't bothered him all too much. He didn't question it before, but the humming could also have something to do with why the Fades usually stayed away. It was true. There could be a connection between all of them, but unfortunately, he wasn't any historian. He was sure someone who had lived, or at least, studied the area would be better suited to answer her question.

The young male looked her way as she stated that he had held up his side of the bargain. She then called to her small bird companion, named 'Canto' and told it to not be an idiot. She stated some sort of command, of brining light forward to restore and fortify, and Yoko watched as the bird's mouth opened wide and released a ball of red light. It was glowing as it flew out of the bird and over to the white-haired female, up her arm, down the other, and over the fire. Once it reached the fire, it stayed stationary, and Yoko couldn't help but stare at it for a while. Was that supposed to help him? However just as he laid there, staring at the ball of light, the pain in his ankle started to alleviate a little, aside from the cold water of the waterskin. He looked down to his ankle and realized that the swelling had gone down some, thought it still appeared to be red and protruding a little. He looked back over to his new companion as she thanked her bird before allowing it to rest, which it did by crawling into her own backpack. He sat up slowly and eyed where the bird used to be before looking back at the mage, listening as she explained that Canto was a spirit, and that she was of flesh and blood and was named Meissa. Meissa. The first name he had gotten from another in a long while. She stated to stick next to the light, and he should heal faster. He nodded slowly, staring at the light for a bit. He listened to Meissa as she explained that it was still his body that needed healing, so he had to build his strength up. The question she asked next made him take pause and he went looking through his bag. He pulled out a small bag of leaves he hand-made that held an assortment of mixed berries he had found along the way. It was through trial and error he figured out which were good or not.

"Uhm... no." He stated, handing her the makeshift bag for her to survey herself. He made sure all of them were safe, but there wasn't much for the both of them. He was more than willing to let her eat them, if she was hungry herself. He didn't have anything else on him that was substantial in nature. "The name's Yokogara Kodomo. I was planning to go hunting or fishing soon after my ankle stopped swelling. I... actually had been running up until now, so I wasn't really thinking of gathering food." He explained, testing the quality of his ankle. At certain movements, it did hurt, but it was at least bearable. So, he might be able to go and help with any hunting, if she didn't mind that. Having another person around did make things easier to do and convenient. He just wasn't sure how long this companionship would last. He hadn't exactly been in long companionships for a while, so even around someone as seemingly nice as her, he was still on high alert. These sorts of things usually ended in betrayal, which he was not about to go through again.

Meissa bowed her head slightly when Yokogara gave his name. Based on how he was talking, he had been through quite an ordeal to get this far. Perhaps that was a topic best left for later. She'd used the spirits' help to recover after some of her more exhausting training sessions and knew the hunger would hit like a truck after a while. She accepted the offered berries and absentmindedly embedded a few beads of her mana into them; the beads floated out of her cloak before sinking into the berries, then a few moments later returned whence they came. She thought for a few moments, then ate one of them and handed the rest of them back to Yokogara.

"Thank you for the snack. I'm going to see if I can find some meat. In the meantime, feel free to eat, sleep, or fish as you like, just try not to put much weight on that ankle if you can avoid it." With that, she donned her backpack and strolled out of the camp.

((Time spent hunting/gathering in spoiler below.))
Quote:
She followed the river downstream, grabbing random berries as she went. When she started seeing more animals, she placed the berries in a pile in a small clearing, then shifted so her steps were once again silenced and climbed a tree. She clung tightly to the trunk and pulled her cloak tightly closed so it wouldn't flutter as she waited.

She waited there for a while, spotting the occasional critter skirting around the edge of the clearing but none that were taking the bait. Patience was the name of the game, though, so she shifted her arms to keep them from cramping up and continued to wait. And wait.

Then it happened. A squirrel approached the berries. It sniffed inquisitively, its moss-colored tail twitching every time it made even the smallest of moves. It stole some food and scampered off only to return once it had eaten. This creature was key to her plans, though it was not her target. She slowly removed one hand from the tree trunk, moved it down to where she was keeping her senbon, and pulled a couple of them out. The squirrel, seeing this movement, fled.

This was when things started to get good. The squirrel had strewn the bait about the area and had even eaten some, which no doubt would have released some of those juicy morsels' scents. After a bit more waiting, a couple of rabbits hopped into the area. She let them get settled in and start eating before tossing her senbon at them. One, two, three, the senbon each hit a rabbit, one in the neck, one in the side, and one in the leg. The latter two scattered. She dropped to the ground and finished off the one with the leg injury in short order, then started following the trail of blood the last one left behind. By the time she had tracked it down it was wheezing and moving slowly. She finished it off, too.

She cleaned and dressed the rabbits before heading back to camp. On her way back, she took the opportunity to gather some more wood for the fire. Wouldn't hurt to have some handy.

When she got back to camp, she set an armload of wood somewhat near the fire and hung up the rabbits she'd captured to drain and dry out. Without much ado, she spent some time constructing a simple lean-to for a small amount of shelter from the elements, keeping a careful watch on the rest of the camp. She'd taken her backpack out of mistrust for Yokogara, injured as he may be. If his injury was light enough, he may have gotten better in the time she was away and decided to leave with her things. For someone who lived in the wilderness like him, food was likely something he was used to getting for himself, so it didn't hold as much value. Assuming he even trusted she was actually hunting. This was a good time for an ambush, at any rate.

Yoko watched her accept the berries he had given her, but observed her using the beads. They went into the pile of berries before coming back out, and he wondered if she was checking to see if they were poisoned. Eventually, however, she ate one and then returned it to him, which he reached back over to retrieve. He could only guess they weren’t good enough to really pass the time. He listened to her as she thanked him for the snack, then stated she was going to go find some meat. She suggested that he could do whatever he pleased, as long as he didn’t put a lot of weight on his ankle, if he could avoid it, of course. A light scoff left him, but he nodded in understanding all the same. Well, it was probably for the best that he didn't irritate his ankle further. He would try his best. Once she said what she wanted to, she grabbed her backpack and walked off out of camp. He stared after her, even when she disappeared past the few trees before glancing around and figuring out what he wanted to do. He decided to just fish for now. More food to gain, the better. He dug through his bag and fished out a fishing hook and twine. He dug through his pockets and withdrew a small dagger once he found it, which he used to cut 4 meters off of the twine, before wrapping the end of it with the fishing hook. Once he checked to see if it was secure, he carefully, with a bit of irritation at limiting his movements, crawled over to the side of the river, maneuvering himself so that he wasn’t putting any pressure on his ankle. Once he was close enough to the river’s edge, he secured one end of the twine to his wrists, while the other with the hook attached to it was thrown into the river. He soon sat in silence, waiting patiently for something to either get caught, or be curious enough to take a bite.

For a while, he wasn’t seeing anything, however, after a bit of more waiting, he was able to spot a good amount of fish quickly swimming downstream. He shifted the twine so that it was in its path, and watched as a couple had taken notice of it. A large carp-like fish had decided to take its chances on the shiny object, and went for it first, latching onto the fish hook. It was quite hefty, which caused Yokogara to quickly grab the twine with his other hand, lest he start getting dragged along. What the fish lacked in length, it made up for in girth. It pulled rather viciously, the added force from the rushing of the river making it quite the struggle. He gritted his teeth and pulled with as much strength as he could. He used his good foot to push himself back, giving him some extra leverage to reel the fish in. After 10 minutes of steadily pushing himself back on his good foot and tugging the twine ever so closer, the carp had been reeled in. He sighed, watching the carp flop and struggle for air now that it was pulled from the water. He glared at it in annoyance, but felt accomplished with himself for doing what he intended to do, with a rather big catch to boot. It had to have weighed about 90lds or less, from what he could guess. It was heftier than he was expecting it to be. He pulled it along with the twine closer to the camp, which at that point the fish had lost the energy to try and escape. Placing it somewhat close to the fire, but not too close, he crawled back over to the river to fish for more. The next fishes he was able to reel in were 8 other fishes of varying sizes, with each of them having translucent scales of varying colors.

After getting what he could, he surveyed the fish, checking for any signs they were contaminated by anything. For each of the smaller fish he had looked over, he checked their gills, eyes, and mouths for any parasites or anything like it. As he moved onto the bigger fish, he looked up briefly to observe Meissa returning with some wood and rabbits in hand. He made a noise of acknowledgement from where he was, and went back to what he had been doing. After a couple of seconds of observing the fish, which he deemed safe to consume, he looked back over to her. She was making some sort of construct, possibly to protect herself from whatever elements were to come, possibly rain, which was the most likely option. She seemed focused on what she was doing, but he sighed, glancing back at the tent he had made right before his ankle started to get even worse. He didn’t trust her, not really, but he thought she was quite… useful? That sounded bad, but that’s all he could describe it. She had medical abilities he didn’t have, so he had put a bit of trust in her. At least enough for him to feel better. Then they could part ways and she could go back to doing whatever she was doing. Researching whatever she wanted to know about the Fades. From how she was keeping her distance, it was fair to assume that she didn’t trust him. That was fair, but he didn’t have the energy nor cared to separate her head from her shoulders. She didn’t seem to want to cause him injury, and if she really wanted to, she didn’t have to heal him. Seeing her build her makeshift shelter caused a part of him to stir slightly. The part that wanted to be a good person and be nice. It made him hesitate in his next decision, but he wondered if it would even matter. She was open to taking the offer if she wanted to. “Hey, Meissa.” He said, hoping to catch her attention. He glanced over to see if she was paying attention, and once she was, he gestured a thumb behind him towards his tent. He sighed, not looking at her directly as he spoke. “You can use my tent, if you want.” He said, before taking care of preparing the fire. He didn’t make a move otherwise, and she was open to refuse his offer. He just felt… bad if she stayed under that shelter. It was the… polite thing to do. She could have taken her kills and left if she wanted, not hung them up to dry. She also could have left him for dead and taken everything in his injured state if she wanted.

                                Yet, she didn’t.

There had to be a merit for something like that, right? He just hoped she wasn’t planning anything. Injured or not, he would try his best to stop her. But for now, he was keeping close to the fire, allowing the red orb to float above it and heal him as she instructed. At least his ankle was gradually feeling better.

Meissa finished her lean-to without much fuss. It looked... passable. As passable as a bunch of sticks leaning against another stick could look. She wasn't very impressed with it, honestly, but it kept out some of the wind and reflected some of the heat of the fire, so it would do for now. Maybe she'd toss some foliage on the outside later, just for a bit more shelter. If she were staying longer she'd definitely have put more effort into it, but for one night it would suffice.

She grabbed the rabbits she'd caught and sat facing the fire. While she worked her way through them, her attention started to wander, eventually landing on the pile of fish that Yokogara had caught. One in particular was absolutely enormous. That alone would have made it fetch a hefty price, but what was with those scales? They glittered in a way she hadn't seen before. Did all fish around here look like that? How much trouble did he go through to catch that behemoth? She glanced toward the bank and saw the telltale signs of the thing being dragged, and also a trail that the fisherman himself had left. Not only could he fish, but it seemed like he could also follow directions. What a catch.

When he offered to let her use his tent, she tilted her head in his direction and waited a few seconds before responding. It wasn't that she needed the time to think; on the contrary, her decision was immediate. What was important here was the appearance that she was thinking about it. So, after a few long seconds, she answered: "That's very generous of you. I appreciate it greatly, but I'll pass." She turned up a corner of her cloak to show its inside lining. In contrast to the cloak's flat gray exterior, the inside was covered in random splotches of faded colors, most of which were a sort of sandy brown. "Weather-resistant. With a fire going, I should be good through the night."

She set the first rabbit aside and grabbed the second one. Meal preparations were going smoothly. Without any seasonings the meat would probably be a bit gamey, but she wasn't a good enough cook to prevent that even in the best of times. Now that she'd been unceremoniously tossed into an unknown world she was even less so. No, she needed to stop thinking those sorts of things.

"That's quite a haul, Yokogara. Where'd you learn to fish? Got any tips for an amateur angler like me?" she asked, nodding toward the pile as she started prepping the second rabbit. "Seems pretty clear that you've been at it for a while. Nobody hauls in something that big on accident."

Her fingers continued working over the animal as though they had a mind of their own, not slowing down when she diverted her attention to the lad. Everything was going smoothly until her skinning knife started to get caught on things. It was starting to get dull, she realized. She'd have to hone it when she got back.

ᴄᴏᴍᴘᴀɴʏ: Meissa xxxxxx ᴍᴏᴏᴅ: Trying to be nice xxxxxx sᴛᴀᴛᴜs: Slightly sore ankle xxxxxx ʟᴏᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴ: South-West Branch of Tsukihara Forest | Camping under a large tree

Yokogara hadn't watched her finish up her makeshift shelter for the approaching night, but when he looked up upon her completion, he could only give her props for it not falling over right away. It looked... as good as they could come. At least with the materials at her disposal. He looked at her haul of rabbits and realized she caught quite a lot. He lacked the patience to catch those critters, so she had one upped him in that bracket. They just tended to hop off and scatter, and his ability to catch them at that point was null. However, she caught a rather impressive amount, and was able to haul them all back. That deserved some praise. Praise he wasn't sure would sound good coming from him. His socializing game had become stagnant over the years he had been alone. However, appearing in this land had taught him things as well. That connections were made if you let them. He wasn't sure about this truce that they had called so far, but it showed signs of being something bearable. Well, despite it being for just a day. The thought made him chew on his tongue before going back to looking at his haul of fish. They weren't friends, they had just met. Being alone was perfectly normal in this land. That was all there was to it.

Yokogara's offer for her to use his tent had been graciously declined. Meissa passed up on the offer, and seemed to catch on that he was more concerned with her not being okay through the weather. He looked to her as she moved her cloak so that he could see the inside, which was lined with a strangely colored interior. But when she explained it was weather-resistant, he nodded slowly in understanding. Well, at least she had what she needed. When she stated that she would be good through the night, he gave her another quiet nod. "Alright." He simply said, before thinking about what to do with his catches. The other small fish could be cooked and preserved if he was careful, as well as bringing it on the go. He'd have to cut down the larger fish in order to pack it properly. Walking around with such a large thing would surely attract attention. Just as he pulled out his skinning knife and started getting two of the smaller fish of the pile ready for consumption, he heard her mention that what he pulled in was quite the haul. He looked over at her as she asked for any tips and raised an eyebrow, looking between her and the large fish he had gotten. He didn't think it was anything worth talking about, but when she mentioned that it was pretty clear that he had been at it for awhile, since nobody caught something as big as that on accident, he stared at her trying to think of an appropriate response. He didn't know what to say about it. "Uhmm... I just happened to... see it coming down the river. Larger fish tend to feast on smaller things, especially if they shine. So... I just hoped to catch it with just the hook, since I don’t have bait, and I was lucky enough to catch it. It's... nothing crazy. It’s.. uhm…” He was having a hard time speaking properly, mostly because he’s never gotten a compliment before, at least one that made him feel anything. He was sure she was just trying to be nice. Which, mysteriously, was very appreciated. He cleared his throat before continuing. “It’s easier to pull in heavier fish when you pull with your legs, rather than your arms. I just pulled back on the ground to haul it on land.” He stated, before shrugging again. He didn’t think much of it, but he was sure she could do just as well. If his 'tips' were useful, then she could do whatever she liked with the information.

As he explained himself, he used his skinning knife to cut the scales off the two fish he was deciding to eat at the moment. The scales were shiny and slightly transparent, as if they were made of crystals. Yokogara wasn’t sure if they were valuable or not, but he would see if that was the case. He set the scales aside from both of the fish before finding two sturdy sticks nearby and piercing both fishes onto the sticks. He propped the fishes up next to the fire, stabbing the sticks in the dirt so that the fish could cook while he did other things. He glanced over to the rabbit she was trying to skin and watched her knife start getting stuck on the skin and meat, and grumbled something to himself. Since he was more or less done, he made a sound to get Meissa’s attention and offered her up the skinning knife to borrow, holding the tool by the blade in order for her to grab the hilt and use it as she pleased. If she decided to take it or not was up to her. Regardless of her choice, he would soon get to work on getting the rest of the fish he had wrangled up for travel. He shuffled through his bag and took out some more twine, about 6 meters worth. He tested out his ankle and noticed that the swelling had gone down completely at this point, and it was mostly sore. He shuffled around and stood up, slowly putting weight on it to see how much he could do. Once he was able to tell that he wasn't going to fall over just from putting a bit of weight on it, he walked near a tree, reaching up and collecting the bigger leaves he could grab from it’s branches. As he did, he talked out loud to Meissa, trying his best to also add to the conversation. “Well, you definitely got a larger haul than I. It’s impressive to gain that many rabbits at once. I don’t have the patience to do that…” He mentioned, reaching up and still grabbing at the larger leaves of the trees. He’d be able to make a makeshift bag of some kind to carry the fish in. He just hoped it would hold until he could come across some sort of other campsite.

Meissa listened to Yokogara's advice with a serious expression on her face. It made enough sense. She wasn't sure she'd ever be lucky enough to find such an enormous fish in a body of water this small, but she was sure she'd be able to duplicate his methods at least.

"Pull with the legs, huh. You know, there's a similar concept in martial arts. Throwing a solid punch is much more about how you hold yourself and how strong your legs and torso are than it is about arm strength. Disrupting your opponent's footing can give you the fight because of it." She caught herself shifting to a tone of voice that was almost professorial. It had been a long time since she'd had any students, but old habits died hard. She stayed quiet for a bit to wind herself down mentally and regain the neutral tone she made a habit of using.

She was done preparing the second rabbit around the time Yokogara started roasting the fish. With how dull her knife was getting, though, she decided against it. She changed her mind when Yokogara offered his. With but a moment's hesitation, she set her own knife aside and took his.

"Thank you," she said without further elaboration, her tone once again flat. She retrieved the third and final rabbit and attacked it with renewed vigor. She wasn't amazing with a knife, but she could appreciate a knife that did what it needed to well enough. On finishing, she sliced the rabbits into smaller pieces and set them near the fire much as Yokogara had the fish. Her work done, she handed his knife back.

"Thank you again," she said, returning her own knife to its sheath after wiping the blood off on the grass. "Rabbits are a pain to hunt if you're not trapping and don't have, say, a bow. Not as bad as hunting scorpions, though. Had to do that a few times back in my home country. They're like rabbits, but smaller, harder, and with the propensity to dig into the ground at a moment's notice. Those were not fun days." She grimaced. Cold as Tsukihara was, it wasn't as harsh as some of the hottest days she'd dealt with in the desert around the Sand. She sighed. "Where are you from, Yokogara? I haven't seen you around Ikeinasu before, so are you a perpetual traveler?"

"Ah, feel free not to answer if it's a sensitive subject," she added almost before the question had left her lips. "I've been around my fair share of rogues and vagabonds. Their stories were rarely happy."

Meissa actually paying attention to his advice was strange in and of itself. It was strange to see, but he could only guess she was actually taking something away from it, which, he guessed, was good. After explaining his method, she mentioned that it was a similar concept in martial arts. She stated that throwing a solid punch was much more about how you hold yourself and how strong your legs and torso were rather than it just being about arm strength. Disrupting the opponent’s footing could also aid in victory. She had become quite serious, at least in terms of talking about it. She was quite knowledgeable in it, so he wondered if maybe she either had a good teacher or became the teacher herself. As she was explaining it to him, he nodded slowly, actually taking interest in what she was saying. He knew of other methods of battle. Martial Arts wasn’t really a part of it, but most of the things he had learned could definitely aid him in that aspect. It wasn’t too weird of her, and she had definitely shared some valuable info on combat for him, so he didn’t mind it all too much. She didn’t seem like the type for combat, unless she was choosing to pick her fights wisely. That in and of itself was fair to understand.

Surprisingly, upon him offering her the knife, which he was sure she was going to decline, she instead thanked him and took it. He watched her prepare the other rabbit quickly and with a newfound energy, especially with his knife being in better condition than the one she had. She made quick work of the rabbit and nodded in her direction once she was over and done skinning them. He took his knife back, flipped it expertly in hand before rubbing it against the grass. He was thinking of rubbing it against his pant leg, but if he were to ever leave this area smelling like recently killed rabbit, he’d be a target before he knew it by a larger predator. Better safe than sorry. When Meissa thanked him again, he simply nodded once more, a soft sound that sounded reminiscent of a 'you're welcome’ leaving his lips before she placed the skinning knife back in it’s small sheathe and in his bag. As he pulled down pieces of large leaves from the trees, he listened to her state that rabbits were a pain to hunt if they weren’t trapped and someone didn’t have a bow. He nodded in understanding. He did have a rather useful bow on hand, which was carefully tied to his bag, but he definitely didn’t have the patience to set up a trap. He’d rather catch them as he went. However, he turned away from the tree he was plucking leaves out of to listen to her state that it wasn’t as bad as to hunt scorpions. Scorpions? He had never, in his life, tried to hunt for those venomous assholes. She explained that she had to do it a few times back in her home country. They were technically like rabbits, but smaller, harder, and had a penchant for digging into the ground the moment danger came near. She explained that those were not fun days and made a grimace. A soft chuckle left him as he pulled off the last of the leaves and returned to the fire. “I can guess. They definitely don’t sound fun. Never thought to hunt them before.” He said, and started on his makeshift bag. He poked holes towards each end of the large leaves and started intertwining the twine within each one, making a simple row before starting to make a few more so that he could interlace them and tie them together. As he worked on another row of large leaves, he listened to Meissa ask about where he was from, since she hadn’t seen him around before, unless he was a perpetual traveler. She also offered him the option to not say anything, just in case it was a sensitive subject. She mentioned that she had run into her fair share of rogues and vagabonds and their stories weren’t ever really happy. He paused in his movements and glanced at her through thick set hair, before sighing and looking back down at his hands. He supposed he could say a few things.

“Well…,” He said, looking at the fire for a minute before shrugging nonchalantly. “I'm definitely among the 90%.” He said, sighing softly. It wasn’t that it was too sensitive of a subject, but he definitely never talked to anyone about it before. Well, rather now than later, just in case he was to ever pass away in these forests alone. Someone would at least remember him. “Lived in a place that was sort of advanced in technology, but had a rugged back door for the poorer lot. They never treated us right, but there wasn’t much we could do about it. To make ends meet, I became an assassin.” He decided to skip the more… gruesome parts of his story, mostly because he wasn’t sure if he personally was ready to talk about that sort of thing yet. That part at least left a stinging hole in his chest. “Long story short, I thought I did the right thing, but I ended up being misunderstood and they ran me out of town. I’ve been traveling ever since, until I ended up in this world. Kinda reminds me of the Iron Nations in similarity, but not really.” He said, having completed three more of the rows of leaves and twine in the meanwhile. He looked over at her again, sort of wondering what her home country was like. “What about you, if you don’t mind me asking? Your home country doesn’t sound too pleasant, either. Well, if you want to share or not, it’s up to you as well.” He said, bringing back the fact she had to hunt for scorpions, which in and of itself sounded horrible. Of course, he was offering her the ability to answer freely if she liked. He wasn’t going to force any story out of her.

Meissa nodded when Yokogara started his story. It wasn't much of a surprise that his tale was less than happy, as so many of them were. She made sure the rabbits were roasting evenly while he talked, which had the added benefit of keeping her hands warm. In summary: Yokogara was an assassin who killed the right--or wrong--person and was run out of town. Probably against orders, if she had to guess, or perhaps on his own time.

"You must be able to cover your tracks pretty well to get away from that mess," she commented. "Unfortunately, the 'who' matters a lot more than the 'why' when killing someone, which is what I assume happened here. Fret not, I shan't be reporting your whereabouts to anyone."

The rabbits were starting to brown slowly, no thanks to the breeze. If she were more used to how her mana pathways worked, she may have opted to make an oven to speed up the process, but alas.

"I'm sure many people would agree that my country wasn't very pleasant, but it was fairly comfortable in its own way. Crime was low in most areas, there was enough food to go around, and I had stable employment in the military. Scorpions were mostly a survival food unless you found them candied at a food stall. Frankly, I'm not sure why I left. Woke up from a crystalline coma in Ikeinasu a couple months ago a few years younger and a lot, well... generally different, magically speaking." At this, the young lady reached into her pocket and pulled out a shard of the statue she had awoken from. She looked at the fire through it contemplatively for a moment, then returned it to her pocket. That was when she noticed some of Yokogara's word choice had been odd. She turned toward him, brow furrowed. "You say you ended up in 'this world'. What do you mean by that? Were you not born here, on this planet? Were you not trapped as a statue?"

After finishing his tale, he had absentmindedly finished his makeshift sack of leaves for the fish he caught. He had made it quite large in his thinking process, using more of the leaves than he was intending to, but it was rather good he did. It could hold more fish this way. He looked up from his little bag project to listen to Meissa. He shrugged at the comment that he had to have been good at covering up his tracks to get away from the mess of being chased out of town. "Well, learning to be an assassin helped." He replied back, then listened as she stated that the situation probably escalated because it mattered more who got killed rather than why, which is what she was assuming had happened. That was exactly what happened. She also reassured him that she wasn't going to report his whereabouts to anyone. He looked at the ground, remembering remnants of his time before appearing in this land. It had definitely been the situation. He had done what he thought was right, fueled by revenge, but it only made him out to be a horrible person. He could only hope that one day, if he was to ever go back, things would get better. He doubted it, but he's been here for two years. It would definitely had been time where his crimes had been forgotten. At least he hoped so. However, having knowledge that if someone did come from his world, she wouldn't rat him out. That was nice. "Thanks..." He was all he could comment.

He looked over at his fish and saw that they were cooking rather well. He hummed and walked over, turning the fish around by the sticks they were stabbed onto so that they could cook evenly on both sides. He then started to pile the extra fish into the leaf sack he made, but he paused halfway through his actions to listen to Meissa explaining her origins. Despite things being moreorless okay where she was from, it seems things were still rather scarce. Her being a part of a military would explain her knowledge in hand-to-hand combat. However, he grimaced lightly at the idea that scorpions might have been her main source of food. However, she had to do what she had to do, he supposed. He listened as she stated that she didn't know why she left, but ended up waking from a crystallized coma in Ikeinasu a couple months ago, then explained that she had awoken years younger and generally different, since she now harbored magic. He was slightly amazed that was how she ended up. Years younger? Did they possibly go back in time? Or was time randomized for them? That was something he didn't think about. He eyed the shard of the crystal she awoke from and stared at it for a bit. It shimmered under the makeshift light of the fire, but he had never seen that before. However, before he could comment on it, she had sort of beat him to the punch.

Yoko listened as she asked about his choice of words, being that he said he ended up in this world, and asked if he was not born here on this planet, and wasn't he trapped as a statue. He thought back, then shook his head. He awoke on the ground, if he remembered correctly. "Where I come from, I've never seen a Fade or any monsters of the sort. There was no magic where I came from, and my town was on the rundown outskirts of a bigger, more advanced, one. If I did come from this planet, it's not the same. The landscape is different. I had been wandering around this world for two years. I just remember going to sleep and waking up in this land, but I wasn't in a statue. Is that how most people wake up?" He asked, now uncertain of the turn of events himself. He wondered what in the world had brought him here, and if this was another planet, or another realm of some kind, he didn't originally come from it. His land was free of magic and wondrous creatures. He was the same from when he left, at least he believed so. He didn't come in any older or younger than he was before. So now he had another mystery to try and figure out.
