My dad always told me to do this but he's like "Don't do it unless you're sure you'll land the hit because after that the (hypothetical) kidnapper will be extra cautious around you and it'll be harder to escape.

That is the one reason that when I teach self defense to my female friends, I teach them combo attacks.
Not the so simple and overrated kick/knee to the groin but something more useful and surprising for the attacker.

The eye/groin is a simple combo. You should see the one I taught that goes for the C3 nerve and the solar plexus.... beautiful.

C3 nerve?? confused Please, teach!

C3 is the one nerve that runs just under the jawbone.
It is hard to explain in words.. umm... the best place to strike the nerve is right around the part where the jawbone turns upwards.

~_~ Hope this helps.

Ah.. striking the C3 properly can knock somebody down or give them temporary paralysis. Just don't use a knife and cut it... not even I know what might happen if you do that.. crying

Like an uppercut, basically? At the cleft of the chin? And do you have to hit it very hard or is it more a matter of precision?

It is mostly about precision.
When you hit a nerve you don't want to make it too hard.. unless you want to permanently damage them.

I usually use the 'bear claw' style strike for this one. The one you bend your index and middle finger then support it with your thumb at their tips and use the knuckle that you form when the fingers are bent to strike.

Hope I am making some sense ~_~

Medical Knowledge + Martial Arts knowledge = awesomeness.

The more you know about the human anatomy the more fun you can have while 'self-defending' yourself.

Har har.

How long have you studied the combination of both?

Tae Kwon Do for 14+ years.

Medical 6+ years.

biggrin

-is appropriately awed- I shall call you 'sifu' then! blaugh

sweatdrop

I am just older than you crying But still inexperienced. Maybe you can call me that in like 3 or 4 more years. ^___^v

lol "Tai ko", in the mean time, then? How old were you when you started, anyway? Sounds like your parents must have sent you for classes or something. Are self-defense and medical knowledge, interests of your parents?

I suppose "Experience teaches best",
"Learn by doing",
and similar clichés have merit.
Take their advice; I'm busy.

HEYA SHIRAICHI! what does it mean to be "squeemish" (sp?) i have bad spelling abilities

I think it means to be afraid of/uncomfortable with something. Like some girls get squeemish when they're around worms (although I don't know why; they're kinda cute.)
