I've taken the advice and tried a bit of that EV training.
Those Tentacruel sure can take a hit, especially from Psychic!
Even so I got +2 in the SP Def dept. per level.
Not bad. I may have to do this in Plat.

Killing something for it's EVs doesn't mean yu automatically get that much boost next level. They accumulate and influence which stats grow more, and have the most effect on reaching L100.
Each Poke is allowed 510 EV's, and 255 EV's in a single stat. By killing a Tentacruel, yu assign 2 or those EVs to Sp.Def.
That said, it's still a powerful tool in raising Pokes.
