The Atma Virus is a demon virus that, basically, turns people into their demon selves... for all intents and purposes, that's precisely what they are. ^^

I knew it was a demon virus, because if it wasn't, then I sure as hell would wanna know what it is then.
I just count it as:
Demon > Demi-fiend > Atma > Human

And I have been thinking this whole day, but I haven't come up with any back story that would fit with the SMT current story. Mainly because of my deficiency in my gaming history of SMT. Very hard for you to make a story to work in with something you know very little of.

Plenty of plot info on various games. The basics, though, are that EVERYTHING HAS A REASON. Personas are given by Philemon (and Nyarlathotep, I think). The Demi-Fiend was made by Louis Cypher. The Atma Virus was created in direct response to the events of SMT2 (we think) as a way of dealing with the results. Things have reasons for existing. Who'd randomly create a demon eater, and why? Would this be controlled, or set loose?

I thought the personas were from the butterfly that you see constantly.

And for the other three questions it goes: Don't know yet, Don't know yet (My personal answer would be because, look at how many demons japan has. Weed control) and was controlled but set aloose

Heh. No, it's more complicated than that...

The butterflies are the symbol of Philemon, who's basically involved in this gigantic game about the future of humanity. He gives the Wild Card power that the protagonists use to change their Persona, though otherwise he's fairly hands-off. Of course, he also runs the Velvet Room and lets you use its services, so there's that... Philemon's basically "I'll give you the opportunity, but you have to go through with it by your own power".

BTW, I know nothing of Persona 1 & 2 story.
