Wow... long day. ._. My grandpa just got TWO blood transfusions. He slept the whole time and now he's sleeping more, but it took about eight hours.

My goodness... What happened that he needed the transfusions? O_o

Well it takes a bit of time to crossmatch someone...and the rate of the transfusion was probably for his own good, if he couldn't take it quickly.

The cross match was done yesterday. smile Yesterday they took vitals because they were monitoring his bladder infection, and his hemoglobin was about 3.8. So they scheduled a transfusion for 7:30 in the morning. Transfusions take a long time because the blood being pumped into you is cold. If it was allowed in too fast, you could go into shock. Plus he's old and very weak. He's got cancer, but he's been off of chemo for five weeks. He's starting again June 7th.

O_O I'm going to assume you're using different units than we do, because in our units we start transfusing people when they hit 70g/L...

No, it's a level system I think. 10 is supposed to be normal.

I'm pretty sure there's no level system for hemoglobin ^_^; I mean, I know patients whom it's normal for them to have a hemoglobin of 80 or so, when the normal is 120-160. It must be in mmol/L or something if 10 is normal range. I know my hemoglobin is usually around 130-140.
