He had noticed Ignatius was angry. Prior to seeing the vine creature, Bren was mostly just confused about what had happened. After seeing it, he was angry too.

Great. Another vine monster.
Ignatius loved adventure, but this had obviously wore on his patience and optimism. Maybe he just didn't like being carted off and torn apart and also failing to beat things he was fairly sure he should be able to.
He was better than this.

He had used his time in the toadstools to collect a load of small rocks. It paid off. Bren flung them at the creature in a tight arc, sending it staggering back with a pained roar.

Maybe the two of them were just starting to get so frustrated that they were channeling their fear in ways they weren't before, or maybe they were just figuring out how exactly to hit these vine monsters where it hurt.
Either way, one of them was almost immediately vaporized.
