......................
Okay, we have GOT to educate you.
In Greek mythology, Persephone is the wife of Hades, one of the Big Three deities and the ruler of the Underworld. Persephone was basically the hottest one of the goddesses, but her extremely powerful and overprotective mother mostly kept her safe from all the randy gods 'n such. Until, that is, Hades decided he wanted her for a wife and went to go kidnap her... at her mother's request, Zeus (who is so ridiculously OP it's almost not funny) bargained for her release, but Persephone had eaten three pomegranate seeds while down in Hades' realm, so he claimed that she'd have to spend three months of each year with him. When Persephone is down in the underworld, her mother (being the goddess of the earth and all) inflicts either scorching hot summers or freezing cold winters (depends where in the world you live; the story gets adjusted based on that), and that's basically why we have seasons. But Persephone coming back always means moderation and comfort.
The normal tradition holds that Hades is the bad guy kidnapper, but a few alternates note that it may actually have been rather willing on Persephone's part as a way of getting away from her mom. XD Either way, it's a classic tale in mythology.
