In the end days.

She was vaguely aware of someone holding her, and of moving. A low groan escaped her, but her eyes did not open, nor did she seem to recover any other form of movement.

After a while Dimitris managed to get her down into the yard past the gate. He put her in the passengers seat before panting heavily looking back at mutants making their way into the building only to have holes punched into their body. "Gotta get the rest of the cases." The fox struggled and climbed the vine again leaving Brooke with the ration bag.

The sound of snarls, screams, and weaponry firing cut through Brooke's unconsciousness. The horse came to, pressing a hand to her forehead; a stinging, heavy headache throbbed in her skull. Ever so slowly, the dark fog in her vision cleared, and she saw that she'd somehow wound up in the car, safely out of harm's way. But where was the fox?

She clambered tiredly on top of the car, trying to see what was going on. The creatures appeared to have finally broken down the door, but what was happening inside that building she could only gruesomely imagine. Her gaze rose to see the great vine above her... and at its base on the roof, just slipping out if sight into the building, was a familiar shadow.

"No... no!! DIMITRIS!"

The fox tread carefully along the vine set on collecting the crates at the base of the vine while creatures were being blown apart at the door, the loaded guns would only last so long before they got inside and escape would be the only choice.
Dimitris reached the roof stumbling a bit and slammed the door closed as one of the creatures had started at the knob. Barring the hinge with an empty handgun clip, the fox grabbed several of the creates and struggled back down the vine with a cord in his hand.

He rubbed his hands together and formed a bit of light creating a spark which ran up the cord into the building as Dimitris ran frantically down the vine with the boxes. "Brooke get down!"

She didn't need to be told twice. She ducked out of the way of Dimitris and his cargo and slipped back into the car, leaving the door open for him.

In an instant the doors blew off the building and the windows shattered as the barriers on the inside had been rigged with excess gunpowder acting as explosives. The building collapsed in a flurry of screeches and shrapnel bullets.

The fox slid down the vine and yelped as a shell ran through his right shoulder sending him off balance and falling off the vine against the side of the car in pain. "Ahh Dang It!"

A shrill whinny escaped Brooke. She lunged awkwardly out of the car and gripped Dimitris under his shoulders. "Dimitris, I...I gotcha!" she panted as she heaved him foot by foot up into the passenger seat. "I-I'll drive!" She was breathing heavily, powered only by adrenaline.

Dimitris sat in the seat whimpering as he fished with his good hand into the bag and pulled out a lighter, a knife, bandages, and a tweezer. "Thank... you."

It had been far to long since the fox was able to utter those words in all honesty as he dropped the creates at his feet. A tear rolled down his cheek as he looked down at his wound. "Try not to watch." Taking the tweezer he cleaned it off then put it into the cut fishing out the bullet, his right arm twitching slightly as he held in an insufferable howl.

Brooke gritted her teeth against Dimitris' cry of pain. Too panicked to buckle up, she brought the car into reverse and made a quarter-turn; once the angle was right, she slammed the gear into overdrive and stepped on the gas. The car screamed out of there, and within the minute they'd veered back onto the freeway.

"Anyplace you were thinking of stopping?" she asked, voice still loud-ish from the stress.

Dimitris gritted and teared up as the bullet dropped out the window and he started heating the knife's blade with the lighter. "if the car holds out Brooke, see if you can make it to a university, there may be national guard there we can get assistance from." He muttereed before placing the burning hot metal to his fur cauterizing the cut in anotehr agonizing yelp.

"Yeah...yeah..." Brooke responded weakly, nodding. "I think BU's coming up soon here." She leaned over the steering wheel, willing the car to go faster.

Dimitris turned his head crying and breathing heavily as he badaged his arm then fell asleep in his seat exhausted and worn.

A few minutes later, and the car was coasting to a stop in the parking lot of Boston U's security headquarters. Brooke didn't see anyone around the area, nor did she really expect to. She turned anxiously to the fox beside her, and the image nearly made her heart break.

She saw how he was slumped and unconscious, completely spent. She saw the bandage around his arm, stained with a little blood. She saw his face, in pain even as he slept, and the dark streaks where tears had run down his cheeks. Before she could control it, there was a burning pressure behind her eyes, and a moment later her vision was beginning to swim. It wasn't long before she was choking back sobs. Here was the one who had fought with her, protected her, helped her... A comrade in pain, but yet so much more than a comrade.

She grabbed her backpack from the back seat and began digging through it, the occasional tear staining its fabric. "Come on...you've gotta be in here somewhere..."

The fox's ears twitched slightly and a low groan escaped his mouth as he muttered. "Did we hit something, you're crying."

"No, we're fine," she said, trying to regain her composure. "I just...I don't know how to say it..."

But her fingers suddenly brushed something in her bag, and she eagerly accepted the distraction. "Ah, found 'em!" She extracted a rubber-banded bundle from her pack; crinkling noises revealed that the bundle was composed of several small paper packets. She tore one of the packets open and proceeded to get out of the car. "Just sit tight, I'll be back in two seconds," she said before closing the door.
