Lophus Rahl

Enduring Gaian

PostPosted: Sat Nov 24, 2007 4:25 pm
He shared a knowing look with Zedd and nodded his agreement that he would be mindful of everything they had learned.
"Agreed then. The rest of you had better get going. Calintz is just ahead on his way here."
Lophus could now easily recognize the magic of the doppelganger for what it was. He didn't argue with his sister over her joining him, in fact he had wanted her to tag along. He shared a brief look with Amara before speaking privately with her.
"We'll see to the final preparations with the Keep and the Confessor's Palace and then be on our way."
Without waiting for another moment, Lophus took the reins to Amara's horse, Lucrezia, and started walking down to the Confessor's palace. He hadn't even given Amara a chance to dismount as he walked her horse. He looked back once more and called out.
"Amon, take good care of Artoeri for me. She'll treat you well."
He smiled and turned back to the road just as they crossed the outer rampart.

Darken first ran into the messenger sent ahead to let Nathan know they were coming. A party, even as small as theirs, could not hold to the speed of a single swift messenger. Even as little as a day in advance would be enough, although chances were the messenger would have a few more than that. The messenger had been able to ride hard, following Darken's trail before the road had driedm, making up for time. Darken had slowed when he heard him, and they'd travelled together for a while, as Darken learned what he could. In the end, they'd broken from each other, Darken letting the messenger go on as he thought.

He could turn back, and catch up to them. The group would need more guards, knowing how they travelled. Then again, there was no proof the Lord Rahl and Mother Confessor would travel the road, considering their other option. Sometimes Darken wished he had his mother's ability, so he too could travel with them. Of course, to do so would make him Mord-Sith, and besides being an illegal and immoral practice, it would rob him of what little happiness he could dream of. To a Mord-Sithm his dreams were the worst kind of death.

He sighed, pulling the horse to a stop, and looking both ways down the road. To go back would be ignoring his orders. Not that his mother had had much respect for such orders. He sighed heavillym, and kicked his horse to action, running down the road to the People's Palace.

Innocent villagers came first.

Amara did not fail to notice the knowing look her elder brother shared with her great-grandfather.
Before long, Amara found herself sharing a brief look with her brother before speaking privately with him. She nodded firmly, a firm, calm smile stretching across her lips.
" Of course," she responded in a soft voice, gazing into her brother's eyes.
Amara, mounted atop her horse Lucrezia did not even have the chance to dismount before her brother took the reins to her horse and started walking down to the Confessor's Palace from the Keep. Amara, as her brother looked back of his shoulder to call out to Amo, glanced over her shoulder as well, exchanging a brief, warm, reassuring smile with Amon before turning back to face the way ahead. She allowed for their eyes to meet, for a brief instant before turning back. Amon hated not being able to protect her or her brother, but she knew he would do his duty and protect Zedd and Hack.
Glancing down at her brother as he led her horse down the winding mountain from the Keep, she studied his features. He was thinking. She could tell the gears in his head were turning rapidly.
She couldn't even begin to discern what he was thinking, but she had a few hunches.

Calintz finally made it, he looked at everyone, wondering what everyone was waiting for. "What's going on?" He asked, he had noticed that something was up. It would also seem that the fifth person wasn't at all pleased with something.

Calintz looked at the fifth person, wondering who this man was. He looked closely at the man and noticed he was heavily armed, with a greatsword, and two other blades, and Calintz figured the man had a few hidden weapons on him too. He was about to look away, but then suddenly sensed something else about the man.

Calintz's eyes slightly glowed, as he had sensed what was strange about the man. The man had the gift, he looked at the man carefully again to see if he missed anything else. After a few seconds he had turned back to see what was going on.

"Calintz, this is Amon. He is another special protector to the House of Rahl and he will be riding with us. Lophus and Amara are going to stay behind to do a little research. They will be arriving ahead of us at the People's Palace. The rest of us have quite a ride before us, so we should get moving."

Zedd patted the neck of his horse and eased her forward. Eager to be out of the cold windy air on the bridge, she easily started out towards the city.

"The stone is going to be very slippery from the rains, so we can only go so fast through the city, but once we get to the outer gates, we will pick up the pace as best we can without risking injuring the horses in the slippery muddy trails."

Zedd urged his horse to pick up the pace and they started out on their way to the People's Palace.

Calintz nodded in greeting to Amon, when Zedd finished. Then turned and looked slightly confused to Zedd, when he said Lophus and Amara would remain behind, but would arrive ahead of them. He looked at Lophus and Amara with a raised eyebrow.

Calintz shrugged, and said simply. “Magic.” He then turned and followed Zedd, he looked back for a moment. He was a bit displeased about leaving them unguarded, but trusted Zedd in what he said. He also had faith they’d be ok, both were strong.

It wasn't until they had reached the outskirts of Aydindril that Lophus spoke to Amara.
"I hope we're doing the right thing."
too many things were weighing heavily on his mind. he tried hard to focus on the solution and not the problem like both his father and Zedd always reminded him. How could he be expected to live up to his father's expectations and legacy? He shook his head as if the act would clear his mind as he looked up towards his dear sister. Out of everyone, it was her spirit that kept him remembering that though they were young, they still could make a difference.

It had taken some time to reach the outskirts of Aydindril, the entire way, both she and her brother had been silent, though now and again, they would exchange glances. At last, her elder brother spoke.
" I hope we're doing the right thing."

Amara glanced down at her brother and smiled reassuringly, her brilliant green eyes searching his gaze. No one in the entire Midlands, no, no one in the whole of the New and Old Worlds knew her brother better than she did, even now she could tell...there were simply too many things weighing heavily on her brother's mind. He always tried so very hard to focus on the problem at hand, he did his very best to think of the solution to each of those new problems. He tried so hard to follow the example of both their father, and Zedd as well. Amara didn't understand. How could one man be expected to live up to his father's expectations and legacy when so much was stacked up against him?. How did her brother deal with such a burden?. Amara's silent gaze studied her brother carefully as she shook his head, as if doing so would clear his mind before his gaze returned to his little sister.

Out of everyone, it was her brother's courageous spirit that constantly reminded her that though they were young, they could still make even the slightest difference in the world.
Amara smiled warmly and reached out her hand, caressing his cheek.

" We are...don't worry...," Amara smiled softly, her hand slipping from her brother's cheek and moving to his shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. " We're doing the best we can, no one could expect more of either of us...," Amara murmured, smiling warmly down at her brother.

It was said Lord Richard Rahl had established the waystations between Aydindril and the People's Palace along a route he'd killed many horses riding rushing against the Mother Confessor's supposed execution. Since his wife held a ritual home here, and the draw of his grandfather and the Wizard's Keep, the D'Harans had accepted a slight change of events, even though the People's Palace was still considered the hub of the D'Haran Empire, and the Lord Rahl was needled to be there as often as possible.

The need for messages to pass back and forth had created the manned waystations, which always held many more horses then should be ever needed.

The system worked well, making it easy to get new rested horses and some supplies before running any one horse to death. The biggest fault was exhaustion on the part of the rider, and the need to stop at night. Darken started riding with the sun, and ceased when it set, usually walking the horse along the road for a while in the fading darkness of pre-dawn and twilight.

The need for rest was a constant worry at his back, but one that he was well trained to deal with. He made sure to pace himself, keeping himself along the brink of his endurance but trying not to push beyond it. It was several days later when he realized he had. He cursed himself, pushing the rest of the way to hit the waystation before night fell.

It'd be best to rest a day, to make sure he didn't end up costing himself more time later in the wild.

(i appologize for my prolonged absence. I expected to have time during the vacation to post and ended up having no time.)

Amon Watched carefully as the Lord Rahl and Mother Confessor both walked away. He had not expected the embrace from the Lord Rahl. It was a custom he wasn't sure he would ever grow accustomed to. He had always been trained against such personal emotions.

He turned back to Zedd, nodded, and pulled himself into the saddle of the Lord Rahl's horse in confirmation that they needed to move on. As he was doing this an odd man rode up to meet them. This must have been the man that left the Keep ahead of the others. His face was one that Amon didn't recognize. "Who are you? I know not your face." He asked somewhat pointedly, as the rode along behind Zedd. He did not know this man and did not, in truth, trust him.

Calintz looked back at the strange man when asked who he was. "I'm Calintz, and you don't know my face because I've only been here for a few days. I'm a Blade Master from the Baka Tau Mana tribe." He explained as they followed Zedd. "I was sent to inform Zedd and Lord Rahl of some books that were found, books of magic. I'm also here to protect." He said as he finished up. He did leave his magic out. He figured he'd wait until he knew more about this guy before sharing that much.

Calintz turned Amon's question back on him. "Who are you?" He asked back pointedly. He had known Zedd had said who he was, but it was only the man's name and what he did. He knew the man had magic, and he was sure Amon knew he had magic as well.

"You're right of course."
She had always been there for him, even in the most desperate of times. Even more so since their parents died. They didn't very far into the city before the Home Guard had them surrounded in a proper escort for the Lord Rahl and Mother Confessor. Lophus could only smile at the thought of how odd his father must have felt. No matter where they went there always seemed to be people around to guard him. Lophus had grown accustomed to it having been born into the protection.
"Was there anything that you wanted to get from the palace before we head up the mountain?"
Most of his things he had kept in the Keep for safe keeping, so it was mostly just instructions that he wanted to give to the Captain of the Home Guard before they left to D'Hara.

Amara smiled lovingly down at her brother and gave his shoulder one more reassuring squeeze. She had always done her best to be there for her brother, especially during the most desperate of times. She was her brother's strength, just as much as he was her strength. He to was there for her when she needed him most, caring for her, looking out for her and protecting her. But being his younger sister also meant there were times when Lophus would become rather overprotective of her. It didn't bother Amara so much as it amused her and made her feel even closer to her brother. Being overprotective was something he had gained from their father, but who could blame him?. Amara certainly couldn't.
Someday, her brother would fall in love with a woman and be just as overprotective of her, such a woman would truly be blessed to have a man like her brother at her side.

The bond between Amara and her brother Lophus was one that could not be broken. They had been together so long, Amara couldn't imagine what it might be like to be separated from her brother for a long period of time. She dreaded such a day. Together, they were a force to be tampered with.

Amara, shaken from her thoughts, glanced down at her brother from the pommel of her saddle. There wasn't much she needed to be honest...she had a spare change of clothes she had grabbed from her small room at the Keep, and they had plenty of provisions to last them the entire way to D'Hara. She'd already tied her sword to her horse as well and she had a few daggers on her. She always kept a few daggers hidden on her, just in case, it was a little trick her mother had taught her after her mother had been held captive for a time in the Imperial Order camp. That had been during the events of the Chainfire spell, before either her brother or she had been born.

Amara smiled warmly down at her brother and shook her head lightly.

" No...I've all I need...," Amara murmured as she ran a list through her mind to double check and make sure there was nothing at all she needed to grab from her room at the Confessor's Palace.

After a moment, she spoke again. " You know Lophus...the Home Guard isn't going to like the fact that we're leaving...and he can't come with us....," Amara murmured, her vivid green eyes searching her brother's features. " He's so used to being the Steel against Steel...but we can't afford to have him and his ring of guards travel with us...as you are aware...it would draw to much attention...," Amara's voice trailed off as she allowed her gaze to shift back to path ahead.
For a moment, she recalled Calintz's bird Shadow. She should have asked Calintz if she could use Shadow to send a message ahead to D'Hara to Nathan to let him know they were coming to pay him a visit...

Amon remained silent for a few moments. He could be said to be somewhat reserved on a good day and on a bad day... cold. This wasn't what he considered a good day. "Not important" was all he had to say on the topic. With that,he turned back around and checked that all his blades were clear in their sheathes. He refused to let something happen to either of these people that he had been commanded to guard. He would do so with his last breathe if need be, even if he didn't trust one.
