Aw, we're sorry! sweatdrop

It's just that it's hard to find guys who like Tanemura Arina and her works...

... well, sometimes I find a few but they're... n00bish... sad

Now that I think about it, how would you describe someone as n00bish?

A n00b (from what I understand) is generally someone new to a forum/manga/etc. who types LYK THISS OMGFD!!1!!1121 and says they like characters just because they are OMGKEWL!!121 or something along those lines. But a newbie is just someone who is new to a forum/manga/etc. But I don't really like to put those labels on people because of all the elitism crap that Gaia has been cursed with.

Also, n00bs think they know OMG EVERYTHING about a series and/or manga and anime in general. They don't and when you try to explain things in a nice way, they get snarky about it. A newbie on the other hand, may not know a lot about a series, but they are willing to learn and accept the fact that they may have made a mistake. biggrin

The word takes on completely different meaning outside forums though. It is generally always unsavoury though. Like on IRC. If you are a n00b there, you have my complete sympathy. Being a n00b on there isn't exactly a bad thing (everyone starts out as a n00b, after all)... But you're going to have pretty much everyone in channel wanting to strangle you. You just have to find someone like me who is willing to put aside this urge and help you out. n00b sort of takes on the feeling of "newbie" there, because most people are too nerdy to write it out as "newbie." sweatdrop

Actually, I rarely come across the term "newbie" anymore. It seems n00b has just sort of encompassed both meanings and has to be taken purely on context. But then, I am fairly new to Gaia, so it might not be the case here.

You might say I'm a pretty good example of the better meaning. sweatdrop

I joined Gaia not too long ago also. One of my friends told me about it, so I looked into it. So I guess I am a n00b in a way, especially if you look at my cheap n00bish outfit. lol.

Ha. You joined a month before me, even though I didn't really start posting till a bit later... I was roped into this too. A friend of mine originally wanted the gold for me signing up and referring him, then he wanted me to rp as his older sister. Like practically adopting him in real life wasn't enough...

After that, I was invited to join several guilds and I'm even a mod in one of them now as an rpg consultant... redface Needless to say, I was hooked.

I think it's really just how you go about it. To be "new" is natural. Everyone is a one point or another. However, because certain new people started being an a** about it (pardon my french...), the term has ever since been derogatory.

I don't think I've ever really been called a "n00b" beyond IRC (which was completely deserved. IRC is scary. I don't know how I ever worked up the courage to start it...) but I've certainly been "new" to a great many things. Just part of life, really.

Wow... Very strange thread for me to randomly go all philosophical like that... So completely off topic too... sweatdrop

IRC is scary. I downloaded a scanlation using IRC once. I don't know how I did it. I've never been able to do it again. sweatdrop

It's really easy once you get the hang of it. It's just that getting the hang of it part. sweatdrop Even with a good source to walk you through it, most of the time you'll still have to ask for help.

I try not to get on IRC all that much... It's far too addicting for it's own good. Once every couple of months I'll get on and be on it 24/7...

Haha! xd I was always so scared to try anything because I was afraid of getting kicked off... I'm still scared. Those tutorials online don't help me much because they're usually for a specific program. I have a Mac, so I can't download the same programs. My brother uses IRC all the time, and I tried to get him to help me, but he only uses them to chat with, not download stuff.

I'd offer to help but... I don't use a mac either. sweatdrop Honestly though, there's usually nice people in fansub or scanalation channels. That's where my friend and I were when we got help. Yes, Xenon Fansubs is forever our favourite group just because one of the ops helped us download... It took us about 24 hours to get that silly file (most of it wasn't our fault. We were told the wrong server, then there was that problem with the ignore setting)...

Heehee. I might have to try asking someone on IRC then. That might be good. I dunno, I'm not that brave. sweatdrop

IRC frightens me. The commands are confusing sometimes and it's so easy to make a mistake (that fact that everyone sees it if you make a mistake is even worse). Luckily I've been in channels (or whatever you call them..I really don't know) that have nice people so nobody's ever called me a n00b or anything. But I haven't been on it in a long time. The only way I'll go on it is if there's a scanlation chapter I really want.

Can't explain it better than Solar-san and Aisu-san xd

But I'm willing to invite newbies, just not n00bs. 3nodding

For example, as you can see, most of the people here know how to spell wink (I say 'most' because I haven't met all the members sweatdrop )

I just now learned how to use it. It's a lot easier to get files than I thought. It's just intimidating at first because there's all this random text and you have no clue what to do about it.
