It's probably The Tell-Tale Heart, but it's not his wife's heart, it's an old man's heart. And I also love the poem Annabel Lee. biggrin

Annabel Lee is sad.

Very and so is The Fall Of the House Of Usher, Alone, and almost all the others.

I liked The Fall of the House of Usher... It was a great story.

It is... Lots of great symbolism. And the descriptive language is amazing.

I noticed most of the books listed here are contemporary works. How about we go old school? Anyone else a big Edgar Allan Poe fan? What do you like/dislike about his works? What's your favorite story? Do you think his humour or his horror works are better (I'm gonna have to go with horror, his verbose and highly intellectual style lends itself better to horror than comedy)?

I've read pieces of his works, he's quite good.

Yeah, we learned about his history in English class. He was also a very disturbed man overall. He was an alcoholic and many of the closest people to him died. It's not surprising that he used his own life and thoughts for inspiration. Most authors do that. It's just his thoughts were slightly more grotesque than most....

his obituary was typed and printd by a rival of his who despised his success in the world of literature.
He's not as haunted by drugs and whatnot as everyone beeives, just misconcption put forht by an angry old fart.

Anyway...

Reading back on the comments, I see that we have failed to praise Poe for his detective stories.

Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Mystery of Marie Roget

They opened the door to detective novels such as Sherlock Holmes.

Yeah, inconvenient. I felt like making another thread though. It was when there was absolutely NOTHING in the Mystery subforum (there still is nothing), so yeah...

Okay, I absolutely love The Cask of Amantillado, but my favorite story of his is either The Sphinx or Lionizing, two humor pieces he did. As for his poetry, perhaps Sonnet to Science would be my favorite, or For Annie. I can never decide. He was actually very intelligent, but his language turns people off of his writing. I personally find a lot of his stuff exciting and hilarious.

I haven't read much of his humor stuff, but I should. The other stuff I've mostly read for school, but I've liked it, so yeah... I actually wrote a rewrite of Hop-Frog (which became my favorite after I did this) in my English class last year... I should post that actually.
