Wow xD I'm originally from Wahiawa Hawaii, from Hawaii as well as skye.
But I live in Huntsville AL... most of the time you don't see graphic designing jobs here unless you work in alot of the technician fields. My dad works with alot of interns that get paid really well D: They design the feilds that alot of military training games take base in, to try to teach military feild artlilary. o_O It's very interesting, but unfortanatly doesn't give me any inspiration.

Middle-Eastern Europe; Warsaw capital of Poland. City of about 1,5 million. Offers for graphic designers? Not really sure, cos I'm just out of one school and in about half a year into another. I don't have any GD education or experience, so chances that I would find a job in GD are almost none xd But from what I heard there are quite few offers (probably cause of the whole EU joining thing...) But all-in-all it's not easy to get any kind of job... You spoke of lack of respect for web-designers - here it's a little strange (in my view), coz company's take fairly large amount of money for making "template like" web pages... stare Raine Dragon however, the webpage for dummies books are crazy popular here too... the library is chock full of 'em.. close to 100.. not a single book on PHP though stare you would think they could at least have one.... *sigh* I feel your pain... same hare, looks like it's a "planetary thing" xp

Toronto, Canada! Go Canada!
I'm officially living in Oakville though, I've ust moved in with relative in Toronto to go to university (Ryerson) for comp eng. It's incredibly boring!
As for graphic designers, there's pleanty of job opportunities here. Right down the street from where I used to live in Oakville there was a place called Ideal Graphics, and there was also an advertising place just downtown here in Toronto, I forget what its called though. Any technical field is appreciated here, and theres almost always somewhere to get a job (with the right requirements) if you keep your eyes open.

I live in Indiana (somewhere in or around Ft Wayne, possibly). I dont work in Graphic Design, its more of a hobby when I find time for it, but it has been a strong intrest of mine since my freshman year in high school when I took my first Graphic Arts class.
There are a few Places in town that I have heard of for graphic design, probably more than what I've heard if I took the time to look them up in the book. The way I look at it though, with the way the world is today you can just as easily do work in Graphic Design for anyone in the world since the web has made the world much smaller than it used to be. So I never thought of limiting job oppertunities to what is locally available.

I'm from Canada, Victoria to be specific. Its beautiful and there are quite a few opportunities down here I suppose. The scenery is beautiful and I have a lot of inspiration. But here is my problem. I love art and photography and creating things as much as all of you I'm sure but I have an over ambitious Father whom I love with all my heart but when it comes to art... (well ok heres a prime example: He took me to his college so I could tell him what the paintings were of. And there was a moose statue made of twigs and it was really quite spectacular but his only thoguths were how awesome the wood would be for a fire.) Anyways ever since about Grade five I have had two passions in life Art and Boradcasting and I've actually gotten places in both but he is kinda one of those people who dont agree with that sort of thing. You know like my daughter who has an excellent average should be a psychologist kinda thing... well heres my biggest problem and i am REALLY hoping there are other people out there who have been through this. Next year I am out of High School and I got accepted into SAIT which is known for its broadcasting, but i had to turn it down because I also got accepted into UVIC and as I said before my father is ambitious for his daughter. So I have to spend (or waste) 4 years getting a degree I will never use and then start living ... ACK?? Anyone? I know this isnt exactly what you were looking for but it does give you some background into me and where I'm from and the mountains I have to climb to get where some of you already are. blaugh heart

I'm from Asia, Singapore. Its a tropical island near the equator. Its hot/rainy all my life. I have never experienced autumn, spring and winter. Its like summer all year round. (cept for the rainy monsoon season)
Only recently that the government here have paid more attention to the arts. Previously, they were investing more on engineering, science and maths. As such. many of the older generation were drilled and taught more on those subjects. However, things have improved and quite a few arts courses have been introduced in Polytechnics and other institutes. The music industry here sucks really bad though.. sweatdrop Well, one must learn to walk before running.
The end! gonk

I know this isnt exactly what you were looking for but it does give you some background into me and where I'm from and the mountains I have to climb to get where some of you already are. blaugh heart Slightly off topic, but thats okay smile I definitely know how that feels. My family was the same way, which is how I ended up in an Engineering/Comp. Sci. course instead of Arts or Graphic Design. I think that if you can, do what you really want to do, not what your father tells you. Still make sure you know what you're getting into, and that you can handle the possibility of a less stable or highly paid job, and if you decide that thats what you really want to do... I say go for it. I've now wasted almost three years of my life in Comp. Sci (I dropped Eng. to finish sooner), not to mention the fees. As long as you're sure, try talking your dad around, and if that doesn't work... well, it is your own life, and is completely up to you, not anyone else. I can understand how hard it is to go against family though sweatdrop

Wow, I guess there are less Canadians here than I thought. gonk We're a minority!! But really, I'm from New Brunswick (which is directly North from Maine for all you States-goers) and I plan to go to university in Halifax, Nova Scotia (a little East) sometime after I graduate next year. I'd never even known that there was an arts university in Halifax until a few weeks ago when a man from there showed up in one of my classes to do a presentation. 3nodding He mainly talked about making portfolios to get into college and university (which helped me tons). I'm not sure how the industry is for graphic design but I'm going to try to get a job in advertising anyways. If it doesn't work, well... *shrugs* Architecture? 3nodding But I think I'll do fine in advertising. One person in another forum actually told me a few days ago that I'm "going places", which was one of the greatest things anyone has ever said to me. *sniff* I have- Dammit, what's that word again? Uh... neutral I'll think of it sometime... sweatdrop
