I've had my ds for 4 years and my L or R button never broke down. Maybe it broke because of a sudden impact ?

hmm...something like that happenede to me. my darling dearest cousin sat on my white DS Lite, and the top screen broke. My dad used super glue, and it was fixed, but i couldn't use the R button. Then my mom got me a pink DS Lite and, you guessed it, it broke. There was something wrong with my top screen, because the picture wasn't coming out right. Then, a piece a it broke off, so i couldn't see out of it at all. Then, I had to use my white DS, I dropped it, it broke again, had to use pink DS, AND then I got a blue DSi! ...whew, that was a mouthful.

lol. No. I don't use them for any of the games I own. I probably used to, I just can't remember. Someone broke into my house and stole all my games and DS. So I had to buy new. Before my house was robbed, I had 15 games. Now I only have 6. I probably did use the L and R buttons, but that was too long ago to remember.

15 games and no L and R button...

I'm going trough a list of games trying to find out which ones you owened... So far, you had lots of visual novels and brain trainers. Stuff like Kirby Super Star Ultra are on "possible" if you didn't know the button usage fully. And New Super Mario Brothers if you never finished it or just don't care for blatantly obvious secrets on end screens.

No, I said that I probably did use the L and R buttons back when I had 15 games. A lot of my games it's an option. You could use them, or do something else with the stylus. I like using the stylus more.

The only reason I don't like modern Nintendo is that they have cheap build quality in their systems. My DS lite's hinge broke and the top screen wouldn't stay up too well. sad

Try taking it apart and cleaning out the dirt from under the button. Check Youtube for some instructional vids, they exist for every kind of problem and sometimes are effective.

I had my original DS from the day they were released up until earlier this year when I traded it in for a DSi. I never had any problems with it, but I treated it like a baby and kept it safe. My sister's DS, however... first the screen went, with a few blown pixels right in the middle, then the hinge broke, and last.. the microphone shorted out. It sucked.
