Funnily enough, I think the Mayans were also the same tribe that worshiped Xochiquetzal, a peculiar god, in the fact that it stood for lust.
One such thing that they would practice under the name of this god, was gay sex, and other homosexual stuff(whilst even going as far as allowing male prostitutes, but no female prostitutes).
I think it Xochi was also dual-gendered, but I'm not too sure about that.

It's not just numbers and it's not the world disappearing or blowing up or whatever. Based on things such as the position of the moon, etc. The Mayans predicted that we will all die in a flood on the 21'st of December 2012.
