The main character is generally either the default name, my name, or some variation of Zephyr, depending on my mood. Link might be Link in one game, but he'll be Zeph in another, or even on the next playthrough of the same game. The only exceptions I can think of were for Mother 3 (I Say) and Devil Survivor (Chris/Crispy Bacon).
Rivals/family/additional party members/babies/etc. get really weird. About the only consistency there is that I never leave the default names.
I rarely nickname Pokémon unless I have a really good nickname figured out for it or I have a duplicate. I tried naming all of my pokémon once, but the names varied between being pretty good and being really stupid. Except Spinda; it's always 'Splinda' since that's how one of my friends always pronounced it.

Otherwise I usually just make crap up.

Call it wierd, but Im either, J, Jiro, or Darius.
I find Darius funny because I made that name out of complete randomness, but one day over heard my mom and dad talking. Apparently that was about to be my name upon birth. ******** LAWL.
Also Obviously Link.
Or even if im bored, J-Wind.

I always name my characters after me. Even Link. Unless I'm doing a second playthrough. My Charmander is always Charlie. I usually name most of my Pokemon, except legendaries. Vulpix is usually after some alcoholic drink, like Vodka, and I ALWAYS end up naming Oddish "Weed".
Good thing Kay seems like a pretty asexual name.

I remember my like 4th time playing through Blue when I was a wee lassie I named all my pokemans in low case letters, exception the first letter. I hated SQUIRTLE so it became Squirtle. But then it evolved. I know my first starter pokemon is Kath Jr. Now I name my legendaries something like Pidgey and Zubat.

Here's my Names:
Pokemon Character: Beavis (from Beavis and Butthead) Pokemon Nicknames: I just leave it be. Legend of Zelda: Qeynark. Don't ask why, I just think it's a cool name. Final Fantasy I: My World of Warcraft Characters (class-specific, of course) - Nediam (not really my character, my dad's) - Warrior - Zanaro (my bro's) - Thief - Aeyrus - White Mage - Laerik - Black Mage Usually I'll just use names I randomly make up on the spot, but I'll use my Warcraft character names if I can't. See, I'm a (semi) author, so I'm good at creating random crap on the spot blaugh

Nowadays, whenever I play a Pokemon game, I'll sometimes give my Pokemon names either for what they are in a different language or make pop-culture references.
For example, in FireRed, I've named my Squirtle "Leonardo" as a reference to Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles.
I've named my Nidoran "Dasgift" as a reference to saying "the Poison" in German: "das Gift."

I name my lad characters usually Kyro if they are a main character in the game.
I name the main female usually Kymerra or Ayame or something.
Pokemans I name whatever felt awesome at the time, heres the recent ones I made for them: *most of em found at lv7 from the attempted mew glitch this time around.*
Afterwards in an RPG when the name kyro has been used I go with w/e felt right at the time for example In my last ff6 playthough I named:
Shadow (Honzo) Terra (Bulma, lol yea) ect, ect,
For games like zelda I either leave it as Link or put it as Kyro (about 50P)

If I'm playing as a girl, it's always Heather. If I'm a guy, then it's Bubbie or Dragon. My town in Animal Crossing is very unoriginal: Narnia. I name my farm in Harvest Moon something similar to Moo Moo Farm, but I can't remember what it is. I give every single one of my Pokemon nicknames that are usually some stupid pun. But I don't give my Pokemon nicknames if I got it from a special event. If it's a legendary you get in the game, I'll still name it. It's hard for me to come up with creative names for animals. My cow's name in Harvest Moon is Betsy. And also, like Kathulu, I dislike the all caps. I have to change it. Then it's annoying when you get a Pokemon in a trade and it's in all caps. But that doesn't bug me as much as getting a Pokemon in trade that had a nickname, but they still put it in all caps.
