Kanda is the only child to his parents. The two met years before when his mother, Emiko, was on her journey to look for a girl with wings, something that her family had been doing for generations. She was a strange woman who was able to move a puppet with her mind, one she named "Ponyo". She had a small affair with her new boyfriend and the two married quickly an attempted to live a normal life in a small town near Osaka. That though, was where she met the reincarnation of Kannabi no Mikoto, and where she found out that she was pregnant. After trying to save the girl, she was too late, the girl was going to die. Before she left though, she told Emiko. "Don't cry for me Emi-chan. It was too late for me, but your son," Using what was left of her strength, she reached forward and patted Emiko's stomach and felt the unborn baby kick. "He will be the one to save Kanna. My Ryuuga"
After the girl died, Emiko's obsession became worse than ever and she would spend her days and night doing the research and telling her son, whom she named Kanda, about the curse. Kanda's father one the other hand, would not take her behavior and left his family when his son was only three. Kanda grew up knowing of the curse and spending his time with Emiko. Their happy times though left when his mother took sick and was told that she would die. Their last moments were spent together with her telling him of the girl with wings and her giving him Ponyo. "When you find the girl with wings my son, put all of your energy in the puppet and let her know she is loved! That way you can save her!"
Years after Emiko's death, Kanda dropped out of school to travel Japan and make just enough money with his puppet shows to survive.
Kanda might be considered a bit standoffish, due to the fact that he is almost always alone. After his mother died, he was angry with the curse and blamed it for his father leaving and his mother's death. Yet, years later he decided to at least fulfill what his mother could not do. He is an alright guy though, he hates to see people upset or in trouble.
